  2. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're having.

I'm no expert in USCIS processes, but what you're going through sounds unusual and I'd recommend being very proactive about addressing it. At a minimum, it will only cost you time and blood pressure.

As a first step, I'd recommend speaking with a tier 2 rep and explain the situation, or if that fails to make an infopass appointment. I'm not saying it's happened in your case, but it seems like the applicant has to make extraordinary efforts if their case goes off bureaucratic rails. You have no advocate at USCIS- it's just a machine and if you're not on the conveyor belt, you will probably be forgotten.

If you don't have your 10 year gc when you travel it shouldn't be too much of an issue. In my wife's experience, every immigration and customs officer she encountered at the airport demanded and inspected her NOA. One overzealous immigration checkpoint person even questioned why she was carrying a copy of her NOA and no the original.

Congratulations to everyone who has received their approval notice or green card in the last few days!

HossDelgado - wow; what a clusterf*ck. I can't believe your ordeal! Thank you for the updates, though.

I have been paying particular attenetion to your experience because I'm the only person so far who has an approval notice but has been waiting more than the standard 7 or so days for the actual card to arrive. My online status said 'Initial Review' until yesterday and today it says,

    • Your case can not be found at this time in My Case Status. Please check your receipt number and try again. If you need further assistance, please call the National Customer Service Center at 1.800.375.5283.

So I called that number and they said I have to wait 30 days before they can begin any sort of investigation :ranting:

Hopefully this is just a small technical glitch. I have tentative plans to go to Zimbabwe in about a month and it would be great to have my greencard with me just to avoid the inconvenience of explaining my Extension Notice to arline and immigration staff in Zimbabwe.

    Oh well......

    Good luck to everyone else.

  3. First congrats to all who have received their cards.

Second, in case anyone's interested in the ongoing saga on my wife's 10 year gc:

The IO I spoke with two weeks ago never ordered CSC to resend the GC.

My wife's online case status has shown as 'address undeliverable' since I spoke with the IO two weeks about but I had a nagging suspicion that there would be more issues so I called again today.

I spoke with a phone rep who couldn't see any record of the IO requesting the card be resent. The IO never provided me with a request tracking number, so she said as far as the system is concerned, the card is just sitting at CSC until an 'updated' address is provided. I reconfirmed the address for a second time.

The call center rep said the card should be received within about 15 days and that the case may not update until a tracking number is provided. So, two weeks ago an IO tells me to expect the card within 6-8 weeks, now a CSR is saying 15 days. Who knows what the hell is happening.

    Lesson I've learned:

The vast majority of cases go relatively smoothly, but when issues arise, the resulting clusterfuck can be spectacular. Vigilance bordering on paranoia can be a virtue in a system like this.

Get request tracking numbers for everything. Follow up obsessively.

Hopefully this ordeal will be over somewhat soon.

  4. A quick update:

Relief: USCIS is sending the 10 year card back to my wife at no additional charge.

    Details:

On April 16 I explained the situation to a tier 2 ISO, who checked the delivery status on their internal tracking system. The ISO confirmed that the letter had not been 'delivered' to my wife, but instead was 'delivered' a second time to CSC.

She confirmed my wife's address and said the card would be re-sent in approximately 4-6 weeks. USCIS status now shows as 'card returned as address undeliverable, call to update address.'

In the spirit of MNyarai level-headed post above, here are the main lessons I've learned and want to share.

    Lessons:

    1. Nothing is guaranteed until you have your card in hand.
    2. Vigilantly check your USCIS status for a tracking number. Carefully monitor delivery status.
    3. Do not take USPS delivery for granted. They lose cards more often than you would think (just search the forums for horror stories). 'Delivery confirmation' is not an actual confirmation of delivery. Many mail carriers 'pre-scan' letters and packages as 'delivered' to make their performance look better. They can do this because USPS scanners do not have GPS capabilities.
    4. USCIS considers USPS 'delivery confirmation' as conclusive proof of delivery. If your letter is mis-delivered or stolen but is marked as 'delivered' USCIS will compel you to file a form i90 and pay the applicable fees (currently $450). This can take an additional 6 months.
  5. This just keeps getting better.

We might have to pay $450 for a replacement green card. A replacement card is free if it was never received, however, USCIS only does this when USPS shows delivery status as 'address undeliverable.' In all other situations, they make you pay. Because USPS says they 'delivered' our letter (albeit 'delivered' to the return address), we might be screwed.

I think this is the moment in my life when I start spontaneously ranting to no one in particular about 'the government.'

  6. Updated with my USPS hassle.

  7. I just had a miserable day with USPS about my wife's 10 year card.

Short version- a temporary mail carrier sent the card back to the california service center without ever trying to deliver it.

I am pissed. I wasted a whole day with USCIS and USPS trying to figure out what the hell happened. I finally figured out to use the biometrics receipt number to track my wife's card on USCIS' site. It showed the card had been delivered on April 14. I checked the tracking number they listed for USPS and, the postal service claims the card was delivered both on April 1 and April 14. Something was clearly wrong.

After a lot of phone calls and an interminable visit to my local post office, it turns out temporary mail workers claimed they had left me a notice on Mar. 31 (they claimed they did this at 8:50PM) and then delivered the card on April 1 (they did not). Instead, the local carrier supervisor believes they just tossed the card into some pile of mail in the local office. The card sat there for 13 days until they found it and decided to ship it to the Laguna Niguel service center today. I am irate. As far as USCIS was concerned, I had received the card and USPS says it's out of their hands now since it's now in USCIS' custody. The manager says he will talk to the supervisor and the two carriers.

Needless to write, I am beyond pissed and am in the process of filing a formal complaint against my local post office with USPS' consumer affairs department. I am going to scorch the earth and make their lives as miserable as possible. Granted they're government employees so it's doubtful a complaint will have any real effect on them.

I just spent over 40 minutes on hold to talk to a second customer service representative. The first rep couldn't enter my info into her system because their webserver crashed so she told me to call back. I just called back. After being on hold for 40 minutes and giving my initial info to the CSR, i was disconnected. I called back yet again and they're now closed. God bless the USPS. I am seriously going to make life hell for all of them.

  8. Hello all,

My wife was approved on 3/25 and I've updated the tracker below.

One oddity- her receipt number does not pull up a case status and we have not yet received the 10 year card. The two folks who received their cards only had a 6 day span between approval and card receipt. Not sure if I should be concerned as USCIS says it can take up to 60 days.

    Good luck to you all.

  9. I do NOT have direct experience with my wife entering the US on an extended visa. However, based on what I've read it's not necessary to get an i551 stamp. The consensus seems to be that any USCIS employee at airport immigration will be able to 'see' your extension/10 year status when they swipe your green card so an i551 is unnecessary.

The main concern for greencard holders seems to this: the greencard is presented as identification to an overzealous TSA employee when passing through airport security. TSA employee makes a stink about the expiration date printed on the card. The easy way around this is to use other id for the security screen (i.e., passport) and/or carry a copy of the NOA/1 year extension letter.

I've also read that many immigration officers will not stamp your passport with an i551 (possibly because they see a stamp as redundant to the NOA/your status in USCS' system). Your mileage may vary.

Bottom line, it won't hurt to carry a copy of your NOA with your greencard. If you're very paranoid and don't mind spending time and effort with infopass, you can try for an i551 but I believe it's unnecessary for airport immigration purposes.

  16. Hello all,

I'd like to join the exclusive December 2013 i751 filers club. My wife recently filed for RoC- her 2 year visa expires at the end of January 2014.

Just sent the package to CSC today (12/4) via 1-day priority mail. Hopefully everything goes smoothly as my wife has a trip booked to Korea for a friend's wedding in January. Having the NOA in hand before departing would be a relief. Also hoping we get the biometric appointment letter quickly so we can do a walk-in before her trip.

  17. My wife's walk-in biometrics at the Wilshire ASC was successful and the whole experience was unbelievably smooth and pleasant:

    - total time: 15 minutes (from entering to exiting)

    - # people waiting: 5

    - arrival time: 2PM-ish

All the staff were were unexpectedly friendly. In particular, the guards were super nice and let me wait inside with my wife even though I was holding our mobile phones- they just asked me to turn off the phones. My wife said the staff member who fingerprinted her was disarmingly welcoming and smiled the whole time.

When we first arrived, the guards asked to see her 797C ASC Appointment Notice and ID. Our scheduled appointment was at another ASC at a later date, but the guards made no mention of that and asked her to fill out a form. She was given a number which was called as soon as she was finished filling out the paperwork. After she was photographed and fingerprinted, the guards stamped our Appointment Notice and we were out the door 15 minutes after arriving.

For prospective walk-in's; your mileage may, but if you're in the LA area, this ASC seems extraordinarily accommodating and worth a try.

  18. I also created an account to thank the OP- thank you! I'd read a lot of conflicting opinions about walk-in's until I came across this thread.

My wife (citizen of South Korea) has not yet received her biometrics appointment for adjustment of status (i485), but it should be coming this week. As soon as we get it we'll try to do a similar afternoon walk-in at the wilshire ASC. I'll post back with the results.

    Good luck all.

I created a log-in especially to thank the original poster - bunnybaby. The ASC assigned to me is Montebello in greater Los Angeles. I had a biometrics scheduled. However I had to be out of town on that day due to prescheduled office work. I went a week early to try and see if they can do something. This guard dude who has been there forever was rude. He flatly declined. I said fine, reschedule. 9 weeks. No case update. No letter. USCIS sucks when you move away from their 'automated process'. For 9 weeks there was nothing, zilch, nada, zero update.

After reading post here, I gave the Wilshire ASC a try. I was in and out in 20 mins. I also work in downtown LA so it was a breeze for me to take a 15 min walk and not worry about parking. The ASC was very good. Friendly staff, no questions asked and no hesitation. They acted as if they were pleased to see me there. I wonder why the difference when they all work for the same USCIS.

The Montebello centre also sucks for congestion and parking. I hate to go there and I hope I won't have to see that place anymore. It's not too clean either. The Wilshire office is great and for a change nice to see smiling workers. I did not see this post earlier so didn't know about Wilshire ASC. Wish I had seen this post earlier. After I got the biometrics done, I promptly received a case update.

    So thanks to bunnybaby.
