    Passport received.

    Wizzle, I never received any email notifications despite registering my email address. Also, on the tracker right now, it says my passport is in "the final processing stages [...] This means your passport should be mailed via overnight delivery on or about 03/15/2015"--I have it my hand right now. Just FYI.

    About to move to the US - how much time do I have to spend there to become a citizen?

    I'd like to add that marrying a U.S. citizen won't change anything for you at this point. Since you didn't obtain your green card through marriage, you have to wait 5 years (and follow all the rules) to apply for naturalization. The only way to use the 3-year marriage naturalization rule would be for you to give up your current green card and re-start the process by applying for a green card through marriage, which would be silly if you already have one (and you haven't at this point even met this hypothetical spouse).

    Jabl2rom bringing up the person he knows whose husband died and the fact that one of your concerns, James_and_JoAnne, is about what might your wife do if you die reminded me another thing that did factor into my decision but that I neglected to mention before:

    When I first got married, several older acquaintances (all of them older British women married to American men, in fact) told me that they had naturalized recently, for estate purposes: there is a limit on the amount you can inherit to a non-U.S. citizen spouse tax-free. As a young and broke couple, this is not a concern for us right now, but it may very well be in the future.

    US Citizenship - Why?

    For me, since Mexico allows for dual citizenship, it was about several things (I'm not a citizen yet; I'll take the oath on March 5th):

    1. The ability to vote/participate politically if I'm going to be living here permanently.

    2. Being able to move to another country temporarily without it being a problem (I don't plan on this, but the line of work that I'm in means I need to be flexible about where I live--I've lived all over the U.S. already). If I remained a permanent resident and faced the choice of moving abroad for work, I'd have to either turn down the opportunity or abandon my PR status and restart the process.

    3. Not having to pay to renew my green card--yes, I had to pay the fees for the N-400, but now I'm done.

    4. The peace of mind that comes with being a citizen--it's not that I expect anything bad to happen, but I can rest easy knowing that I can travel more easily and that I don't have to worry about losing my green card or deportation (not that I've ever done anything that would make me deportable!). For example, during my last entry into the U.S., I was stopped at POE because of a mix-up in my file from all the way back when I was on an F-1 student visa (a mistake by an officer at my university). I had been a LPR for over 2 years and had entered the country several times on my green card without issues and yet this time it *was* a problem--and it cost me time and anxiety at secondary inspection and made me miss my flight connection.

    USCIS says to wait ten days to update your Social Security record. It doesn't get updated right away:

    I've had two friends, with name changes, apply for passports (not at agencies) with expedited service with just their Certificates of Naturalization, get their passports and Certificates back within a week or two and they then updated SSA and driver's license and updated everything else from there.

    The Certificate of Naturalization can serve *both* as your evidence of citizenship and as your photo ID, so you can do passport first and then the rest.

    Here's how the State Department lists the requirements (also, I have friends who have recently done it this way):

    Evidence of U.S. Citizenship

    You must submit one of the following original documents as primary evidence of U.S. citizenship (photocopies are not acceptable):

    • Certified U.S. Birth Certificate (must meet all of the following requirements):
      • Issued by City, County, or State of birth
      • Lists bearer's full name, date of birth, and place of birth
      • Lists parent(s) full names
      • Has date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
      • Has registrar's signature
      • Has embossed, impressed, or multicolored seal of registrar
    • Previous U.S. Passport (may be expired, must be undamaged)
    • Consular Report of Birth Abroad
    • Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship

    Photo Identification

    When you submit your application, you must present one of the following primary photo identification documents, and submit a photocopy of that document:

    • Valid Driver's License (plus a second ID if issued in a different state than where you apply)
    • Undamaged U.S. Passport (if issued less than 15 years ago)
    • Certificate of Naturalization
    • Valid government ID (city, state, or federal)
    • Valid Military ID

    I just had my interview in Columbus, OH this afternoon. My husband came with me (I'm applying under the 3-year-rule, and he works nearby, so he came along just in case) and we arrived 30 minutes early. I got called about 25 minutes after my interview time.

    The officer apologized for running behind. I stood while taking my oath to tell the truth, then he asked me to sit down and for my green card and driver's license (or state ID, but I have a license). Those were the only documents he asked to see, even though I brought a ton of evidence (everything they asked for in their letters--passports, tax transcripts, marriage certificate, plus some extra stuff pertaining to our particular situation, since, for example, I commute for work to another city for part of the week--and it used to be weeks at a time--and thus spend a lot of time away from home).

    He asked if I still wanted to change my name (I'm shortening my last name to the version I use most often) and had me sign some papers to that effect, as well as write the new name on the passport pictures I'd sent with the application.

    Then he went over certain aspects my application really quickly--are you married? is this your first marriage? have you taken 6 trips outside the U.S. in the past 5 years?--without asking to see any verification of those answers. He was friendly throughout and joked about having issues with his software. He then asked some of the Yes/No questions (the "are you or have you ever been a terrorist?" ones--I got the terrorist one but not the prostitution one, for example; he also joked a bit about my professional memberships), asked me all the ones about supporting the constitution and agreeing with the oath. He then signed my application and had me sign it as well.

    My English test was reading "Who can vote?" and writing "Citizens can vote." My civics question were:

    What is the highest court in the United States?
    Who makes federal laws?
    How many amendments does the Constitution have?
    What is the name of the Vice President?
    What group of people was taken to America and sold as slaves?
    Why did the colonists fight the British?

    He gave me the sheet saying I passed and I was recommended for approval. He said that usually ceremonies are scheduled 3-4 weeks out, but that I might get lucky and get scheduled earlier, since he'd heard that there might be some openings later in the month. I told him that'd been pretty painless and that I'd brought a ton of documents he hadn't asked to see. He said that he had all he needed in his file already and that he knew it was a legitimate case.
    I'm glad it was so easy and I'm hoping for an oath ceremony as soon as possible.
