Go to the New York DMV web site and scroll down to the section "Drivers from the US or Canada Who Move to NYS", where your question is answered in detail.
Yes, you can do it after you get married. Bring your marriage license and all your ID to Motor Vehicle and they will give you one if you have Ontario G license.

I am so sorry to hear about your sad story. I had so many bad experiences with them too, first when I POE they held us for 3 hours as they mistakenly gave me an alien number which was previously given to another person. I had to go back to Canada and reenter another time. Then after applied my EAD and Green card i received 3 NOA letters and 2 of them had my name misspelled. Then another time, after waited for over 6 month for my green card I got a letter saying my medical document was not forwarded to their center and also they need more evidence. So i have to do my whole medical again. Thank God i finally got my green card after over 7 month of application.
I read the similar stories again and again, i wonder that how this people got their job at the first place? They are so careless and made so many mistakes.
I did not change my name after i got married because i knew that it would be a lot of troubles if i did as i had my SIN card and my driver's licence with my maiden name. My Canadian passport is in my maiden name too. Another thing is, you have all your history in another county, like your education, work, training... if you change your name and use your married name on your resume the future employers will check your background, you may get trouble too. I still have my maiden name on my resume so they are all consistent.
I am sorry that i cannot help with this but just want to share my stories so other people may be aware when they consider changing their names before they get all ID cards.

Hi Everyone,
I just got a letter for a request for additional evidence. It states "The US Department of State medical forms DS-2053, DS-3024, DS-2045 and DS-3026 were not forwarded by the Department of State."
I called the immigration office and they said that I need to take another medical.
I took my medical in Montreal April 2011 and interview was on Aug 2011. I entered USA Oct 15, 2011, was married Jan 2012, and filed Jan 2012.
Can anyone explain to me why I'm being asked to take another medical?
I got the same letter too. I am asked to provide them divorce paper of mine and as well as my husband's. in addition, they said the same things, all medical forms are not forwarded to them. I also need to submit form I-693 with medical and vaccination records.
I had my medical exam in Toronto last November and POE before Christmas and but I don't know where the I was frustrated yellow envelop is now. I was frustrated at first, i called the department of state and they told me that they cannot track the document as the case is processed.
The good news is. I went to the civil surgeon office yesterday intended to have my vaccination records transcribed, but when they read the letter they said that i need a medical exam. So I had my blood test there, and will get the result and all the paper work done tomorrow. it only cost me $150 which i think worth it if it works.
You can do it here too. Just call them and ask what they can do and how much it will cost. some civil surgeons charge a big copay.
Hope it helps.

Both my fiance and I have called the NVC, and they said there's nothing they can do and to contact the consulate. And with Montreal, the only way is email.
The notarial certificate should work. I do not have my birth certificate either but I got a paper which states my name, my birthday and where i was born and my parents name(Zhengming)in Chinese and had it translated to English and notarized. If you are not sure you can get another one like mine. Considering the time, you can ask your family in China to do it for you but i don't know if it can be done in two weeks as mail from China takes long time.
Hope it helps
Good Luck

I'm concerned with the original birth certificate requirement of the K1 visa process.
I was not issued a birth certificate at birth in China. I immigrated to Canada 19 years ago with my parents, and at that time, I was issued a Notarial Certificate of my birth, which was used as the birth certificate requirement for immigration paperwork. I still have a photocopy of this certificate with translation - but not a certified copy, and I no longer have the original. My parents believe the original was submitted at some point during the Canadian immigration process and never returned.
I am unable to obtain another certificate issued from China, because no one in my immediate family lives in China, and when we became Canadian citizens, we gave up our Chinese IDs (hukou), which is necessary to obtain such a certificate.
I have my Record of Landing from Canada which lists my birth date/place, and my father's birth date/place, and I'm also prepared to get my mom (and/or dad) to sign an affidavit stating the details of my birth.
I emailed the Montreal consulate these details more than three weeks ago asking if those documents could be used instead of an original birth certificate, and today received a reply that did not address my question whatsoever, and just restated the documents I need to bring to the interview (beginning of course with the original birth certificate). Seriously, #######! After three weeks, they send me an email copied off the website?? Infuriating.
Anyone have experience with this type of situation, who could provide some guidance on what other documents I should look into trying to obtain?
I have two weeks until my interview, and this is the only thing I'm not 100% sure about.

You just finish the report and send it to Service Can and they will not mail you report cards again until you get your EAD. After you get your EAD you should send them a copy immediately and they will process your case and decide if you will receive EI.
Hope this helps.

You must file your departure tax return to international tax service office in Ottawa. For the details go to Canada revenue agency's website and search for T4056 and you will figure out what tax forms you need to file out. I just got that and have not read through it yet.
Good luck

Make an info pass appointment and go in. You need to sort out this issue right away.
Thanks. I called USCIS and they told me just leave it blank and they will give me another after you receive my application.

Thanks. I have a problem with my Alien number as it was previous issued to another person. I was kept for 3 hours at immigration because of this issue, they asked all kinds of strange questions and finally let me enter into us as visitor. I had to go back to Canada 3 days later and POE again. They said that i will be assigned another alien number but have not got it until now. So i am wondering if i use the old one i will get trouble again on my green card application. They don't take responsibilities for their mistakes.

ok so it begins with a c then? also - when filing out the AOS forms do i enter my surname as my husbands last name? i have not gone to legally change my name yet but will be when i apply for SSN and new drivers license?
Yes, that is the one. I suggest that you use your maid name and you can change it after you get your card. Otherwise, you will be asked for proving.

Hi Dear Vjers,
I am preparing the documents for my AOS and have a question here. On the bottom of G-325A this is a Alien registration number to fill,is this the same as Alien number on k1 Visa? I ask this question because I take the previous form filled for petition and find it is a different one. Does any one have any idea about this?
Thank you

I imported my car to us. The process is simple actually, first you need to get a compliance letter from your car manufacturer, when POE you give the letter to customs officer and they will do the paper work for you. One condition is that you have to own the car. Hope it helps.

Hi Minu Luvs Pinu,
glad to hear from you.I think EAD takes almost as long time as Green Card does. Since you are getting married soon you can apply for Green Card as soon as you get married so all employers can hire you.

hey everyone!
I have my interview at the vancouver consuate this friday. And if al goes well, I'l be moving to the USA in with my hunny!
The job im currently working at gives T4's a little late every year, we get ours like March 6 every year or something like that.
Since ill be gone at the end of February in the USA can I get my job to mail my T4 to a family member here and then have them mail it to me in the USA?
Is it easy to do your taxes for canada doing it from the USA? how does it work?
Absolutely! just give your company your US address and ask they to mail your T4 to US and they will do it.

You can go to life lab to have blood test to prove you have antibody. It may be the best way. Based on your age group they only need few vaccinations (3 or 4) plus flu shot.

You need to register with DHL through CSC to send your packet 3 or other documents if you miss something for free. And after interveiw your passport with visa and documents will be delivered though DHL. It is fast and free and also you can track your package.
-
Did you call your local DHL? Do you remember if you registered at DHL to deliver your passport to your home or you pick it up yourself? I say this because if you asked they to deliver it to your home it takes longer time. Otherwise, call DHL and check if they got your package.
If they don't have it, you need to figure out what is going on as it really takes too long. We have our interview in Montreal on Nov 23rd,2011 and most of us got ours on 30th or Dec 1st.

You have to file the D-160 online. Keep in mind that you also need to upload your piture so be prepared resizing your photo and typing quickly as you only have limited time to fill it and submit it. After you sumbit it you need to print out the confirmation page to be sent to consulate office. Good Luck!

Plastic bag is the best, but some people bring binders. The question is: do you really need to bring them photos, letters to prove your relationship? You are married, is marriage certification the best proof of all? Mine is K visa, we only gave them the receipts of ring and wedding dress. We brought extra copies of the forms and other documents but they did not ask. My suggestion is, only bring things they require. for the forms you have already submited do not bring they again.

Good Luck!

Going from Kingston ON to Greenwich CT about 6.5 hour drive. It's not that bad actually. Driving by yourself for 6.5 hours sucks though.
And yeah, I live in a studio apartment, so I barely have any furniture, I've already sold my bed. If there is anything I have to leave behind I can leave with my mom and pick it up some other time I go visit. I gotta do some major packing this weekend, that's for sure.
Where are you heading to?
6.5 hours it is a long dirve. i never dirve that far. I know that driving alone is not fun but just thing about this probablly is your last time driving by yourself you will feel better. From the next day you will no longer be alone and you will be acompanied by someone you love.
My fiance lives in Canandaigua, NY, finger lake area. it is around 2.5 hours dirve as l live pretty close to the boarder, St.Catharines. I just started my packing again. I did all packing 4 months ago and attempted moving my furniture to us for we suppose to get married in September. Its a long and sad story. But all is good now and will be together for real.
I wish all the best for your moving and future life.
Tax Return for non-resident
in Canada
Posted
Hello all,
Have not contacted with you for a while, hope all had a wonderful holiday.
I have a question about the tax return for non-residents: I moved to US in December 2011 and I filed my tax return for the year of 2011,which called exit tax return by VJers. Actually I was still Canadian Resident in 2011. I received EI in 2012 which was my only income. My question is, do I need to file tax return to CRA?
Thanks
Tracy
