  1. The site may never be updated. One well-known member here (Gary) will tell you that his wife has already become a citizen while the website still says that their initial petition is processing.

Congratulations on your approval, si man! :)

Ok, thanks! Sometimes I don't understand the point in having the information available via the website because it doesn't get updated half the time, but oh well.

    Thank you :)

  2. I read the post here and in some cases it took 1 day and in other cases it took a few weeks to get approved, stick with the good feeling that you had B-)

Sooo...I waited three weeks with nothing, and couldn't wait any longer, so I called USCIS this past Wednesday. I was advised that they would contact the field office, and if I don't hear anything in 15 days to contact them back. Friday afternoon, I got an email that I am approved!! However, I'm still waiting for the site to update to "card production". Anyone know how long that takes? I'm not trying to be impatient, but I have had to contact them about each step, and it seems like every single time something happens within a day or two. I can't help but wonder if I just keep falling through the cracks every time, and me asking for information during each step is the only reason things are happening?

  3. Hi everyone,

I have posted a few times on here and always gotten great help, so here I go again. I'm currently in the process of trying to get residency in the US. I obtained a lawyer who "helped" me with my paperwork, received my I-485 and I-765 receipts, and my husband got his I-130 receipt in the mail, went to do my biometrics, and couldn't because I do not have a government issued ID. At that point, my husband contacted another lawyer who said I need to get my passport. (Long story short, I came to the US on my mother's, who has since passed, and the passport expired). The new lawyer said that my first lawyer should have told me from the beginning that I needed my passport before she proceeded since I do not have any other ID. Anyway, I have since sent my application for the passport (a month ago), but now I'm worried that my application is going to become abandoned!!! The new lawyer said to write a letter to USCIS explaining all of this, but I have researched that on the internet, and don't even know where to send the letter to, and it seems as though that wouldn't help anyway. Does anyone have any information about this?

    Thanks so much.

  4. if the question applies to you then you will have a naturalization certificate but i i was born in the uk and i would answer the question as "no". if you wasnt naturalized then the question doesnt apply to you :)

AAAHHHHHH!!!!! I guess I just needed someone else to say that out loud for me to comprehend the question. Your exactly right, the answer is no, lol. Thanks so much!! :)

  5. what exactly does the question say?? im guessing you wasnt born in england??

It says "Were you naturalised or registered as a British subject, citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies, British citizen, British Dependent/Overseas Territories citizen, British Overseas citizen or British protected person?"

I was born in the United Kingdom, and yes I am a British citizen. Therefore, I have to answer the following:

Certificate number, Place and date of issue, Reference number, section.

I don't know where to find these.

  6. Either from your birth certificate or your citizenship certificate.

Did you read the instructions on applying for one/filling out the forms? generally they tell you what you need to apply with in the instructions.

Yeah, I have them in front of me, but I don't see the specific number's/dates that they are asking for. On my birth certificate, there is an app number, a QBDY number, and NHS number, and then there is a date of registration...that's why I'm confused. Sorry, I'm new to all of this.

  7. Hello,

I'm in the process of trying to get my "first" British passport and have a question. In section 1B, it asks for a certificate number, place and date of issue, reference number, and section....where do I obtain this information from?

  8. Since this will be your first time applying for a British passport, I believe that everyone is required to attend an interview. I certainly did when I applied for my passport (in England), back in 2008. The interview is not anything to be worried about-they mainly will just want to ask some questions to make sure that you are you. I can't remember exactly what they asked me, but I think most of the questions were just meant to confirm the information I'd entered on the application form. I remember being a little anxious about it when I went for mine, but it's more of a formality really. The staff there were very nice and friendly, and it was over with in about 10 minutes. If I remember correctly, they will schedule your interview automatically/send you information on how to schedule one yourself once they receive your application.

Of course, I'm speaking from having applied for a passport whilst in England, so it might be different when applying from another country.

Thanks everyone for your input. Another question that I have is can I just go to the embassy and apply for the passport there? Reason I ask is, I spoke with an attorney, and I basically need to get this as soon as possible. Either my passport, or at least some type of document with my picture ID so that I can get my biometrics done. Does anyone have any experience in this? Thanks!

  9. Hi everyone,

First of all, I posted this in another section of the site, but only got one response (thanks for that by the way!) Just seeing if anyone else has any other insight on this? Basically what I'm trying to figure out is if in fact I do have to get my passport in order to get my biometrics done (which is going to add another two months and $$ to my process), or if there is ANY other route? Thanks again for any help/comments!

I have a question about getting issued a "new" passport. To TRY and make a long story short, I came to the States in 1985, on my mother's passport (as I was only five). Due to my father's work, we ended up staying here, however he never went through the necessary steps to continue our Visa, or have us become permanent residents, therefore, I'm now stuck in a bind trying to figure all of this out on my own (which has been great fun, let me tell you!!). Anyway, I'm now stuck. I recently married, my husband filed the paperwork for me, and I filed the I-485 and I-765. I received my notice to go to my biometrics on 7/20. I do NOT have a government issued ID because of all of this, so they would not allow me in to the exam. I have been told by a few people that I need to get my British passport. It seems that it's considered a new passport for me since I never held my own, and I was born before 1982, and a citizen, I shouldn't have an issue getting one. Because of the headache and the continuous let downs that I've been through in the past few months, I figured I would ask if anyone has been in a similar situation before I fork out more money to get the passport and then find it's not the resolution? Thanks to anyone with any information, it's greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Jacidy, I'm afraid I cannot comment too much on the immigration process itself, since I came over on a K1 visa and my case was pretty straightforwards compared to yours. However, if memory serves me correctly (and this was a year back now, so keep in mind that it is a bit hazy in my mind now) when I went for my biometrics appointment all I needed was my appointment letter, my passport and (I think) my marriage license. I seem to recall that at the time of applying for my visa and attending my biometrics appointment, I did not have any form of state ID because they would not issue it to me. I should have applied for a temporary state ID in the three months that my K1 was valid (after I arrived in the US), but I left it too long and they would not issue me one until I had my green card.

I seem to recall having read that it isn't impossible to get a new UK passport in the US. You'll have to go over to the British Embassy and have an interview (if I remember correctly), but I don't think it's too much harder than that.

Sorry I can't offer more information.

Thank you for your response. Right, I'm not able to get a government issued ID anymore, however I was when I first arrived. This issue I'm facing is that I'm basically being told that getting my British Passport is my only option. I'm not aware of having an interview done though? I did find that I can fill out the application and send along the fee, and they should be able to just send it to me? Does that sound correct? I'm thinking I should call the embassy to see if they can assist me because at this point I'm not sure what else to do. When I went to the biometrics they mentioned having my passport as form of ID to get in, but I have never had my own, I was always on my mother's.

    Thanks again for your information!

  12. I would think your right about the AOS, yes, but I wasn't sure what to pick on here..I'm kinda new to it all.

Yeah, that makes sense, I just wasn't sure as I've read a million of these message boards in the past few days, some say they didn't even get an appt for biometrics and just got the EAD in the mail. But yes, what your saying makes sense. I have all documents to prove I'm me EXCEPT the government ID, which I can't get until I get the EAD. So, I will try that then. Thanks!

I believe I am, but the only thing about that is British passports are "backlogged" I guess would be the right word to use right now, and it takes at least 6 weeks to get one...my biometrics appointment is on 7/20. I was on my mother's, but she has since passed away, as well as it being expired....but after researching, it seems that if I'm a British born citizen born before 1983, I should be able to get one. So, with that being said, if all else fails, I assume that is the route I will need to take.

Thanks so much for all of your help, this has all been quite an experience for me!..and far from over, I'm sure.

**Also, I tried to contact the USCIS line, but all the lady could tell me was to bring everything that I have and hope they will let me in with that (so just what you told me basically). Unfortunately, I can't contact the office that I'm going to be getting the biometrics done to confirm with them.

  13. Does that mean you're actually applying for Adjustment of Status, not CR-1?

You need to do the biometrics before they'll issue you anything, so I would just go to the appointment and bring as many proofs of ID as possible: so student ID, old work ID, birth certificate, marriage certificate, proof of address...not that you'll need all that, but just in case. Unless someone stupid is working security they should be able to let you in because, well, you can't create an ID you don't have. They have to have some method to identify those who don't. Might be worth calling -someone- beforehand to check.

So you're not able to apply for a British passport?

I would think your right about the AOS, yes, but I wasn't sure what to pick on here..I'm kinda new to it all.

  14. Are you in the process of renewing your passport or something?

Do you have a UK driver's licence or similar? Even a student ID card with photo and DOB? I don't know how strict they are about what is required...

No. It's a long story, but to make it short, came over to the US on my mother's passport when I was young, that expired in 2001, and I never got my own as it wasn't needed. I recently married, and he is sponsoring me. I don't have any identification government issued at all. I do have a student ID, but it basically just has my name and picture, that's it. I have that, and an old work ID card but again, that just has my name and picture. Not sure what else to do.

  15. Hi all,

I have received my appointment for my biometrics (7/20/11). Problem is, the letter states to bring a passport or government issued ID to get into the center, and I have neither. I'm unable to get either one as well at this point. Here is my question: is biometrics required before receiving the EAD? If not, I can postpone my appointment if I absolutely have to, wait for my EAD, get my ID that way, and have no issue. My state takes the EAD as primary documentation to get a driver's license. Please advise. I'm trying to do everything the right way, and keep continuously running into hurdles :( Thanks for any help you can give me, it's MUCH appreciated!!!!!!
