Now would be the time to contact your local congressman's immigration aide and have them get your green card. Copy the welcome notice and write a cover letter detailing all steps you undertook to see you get this card and what the USCIS people told you (dates, times and short descriptions of conversations will suffice). Then ask them to step in and get the card for you.
Sure. I am inquiring about that now.
You have any idea whether I can go to the SSA to get the unrestricted SS card with just the I-551 stamping on my passport; that is, before I get my physical green card?
-
did you confirm returned mail pieces, or no ?
I got my welcome notice through mail...and I confirmed with them that they have my correct address in their system. They looked up and said they haven't mailed the card yet. So its not a question of the mail being lost.

Make sure to update SSA with your PR status so you can get the unrestricted SS card.
Can I go to the SSA to get the unrestricted SS card with the I-551 stamping on my passport; that is, before I get my physical green card?
Yesterday I called up USCIS and spoke to a Tier-2 rep. He said that I would have to wait and there is nothing they could do about it he even said it takes almost a year for some people to get it. He said I should go to the local USCIS office with a InfoPass to get a new stamping on my passport if the current one expires.

one more question when did u get ur SS#?
good luck with your case
I had my SSN when I was here before on H1B, so I didn't have to apply again when I came on Green Card. If you are coming for the first time, you will have to apply for your new SSN.

@milimelo: I got my welcome notice soon after I reached US.
@dan_leb: I have my drivers license and SS#. I can legally work/travel with the I-551 stamp on my passport.
As Darnell suggested, I am going to call them and ask for a Tier 2 rep. If that doesn't work, will contact the congressman as milimelo suggested.

Hey All,
I got my I-551 stamp on my passport (CR1) and reached US on Sept 1st 2011. But I haven't received the Green Card yet, and it has been 5 months since I got here. I called the USCIS # 800-375-5283 a couple of times, and they said that the card is in production and that I would get it soon. Anyone has any idea on whether I could at least know why its getting delayed?

Hey All,
My interview was on the 23rd and by God's grace I got it approved!
Thanks to this community for all the help and guidance!
These are the questions they asked me:
1. How did you meet?
2. Why such a long gap between your first meeting & wedding (we got married after 11 months)
3. Why didn't you have a wedding ceremony(we got married in court)
4. What is she doing?
5. Where is she now?
6. What are her parents doing?
7. Who is sponsoring her?
8. Did she come to visit you in India?
9. How do you contact each other?
10. Asked for the wedding pictures

My case was completed at the NVC on June 21st and I got my interview date at the consulate on Aug 23rd (2 long months wait). I got the interview appointment letter in email with details of the interview, documents to be presented and medical examination details.
1. Would the NVC/consulate be sending me any more packets before the interview? If then, would it be sent to my agent(my wife) or to me.
2. The NVC line - 603-334-0700 gives me the status that the case has been completed at the NVC. Is there any way to know whether it has reached the consulate?
3. Is there any possibility to change the interview to an earlier date? Two months is too long!

Yes, I do have the "valid for work only with DHS authorization" legend on my SS card, which I guess needs to be removed. So, I can work from the day I set my foot in the US right ?
-
Thank you for that information. Could you please explain what you mean by the legend? Does the SS# which I got while on an H1B has any restrictions attached to it?

Hello All,
I was married in a NY court in Dec 2010 before my wife and I came to India for our traditional wedding. I have my case completed at the NVC and got my interview scheduled in August.
1. Should I be mentioning anything about my traditional wedding to the consular officer? If I do, would they ask why I got married twice ?
2. Should I be paying VFS any fees for scheduling my interview?- hope the India VJ members could help me on this
3. I have a social security # since I was in the US before on H1B. Can I use this to work as soon as I reach the US (even before I get my GC)
4. Should I be applying for another Social security card once I reach US?
5. India VJ members - what all documentations do the consular officers usually ask for?
Thanks in advance!
Joe

Did u summitte PCC from India. If you did then how did u get it? In my city, they want interview appointment letter.Let me know how did u get it..
You just need to let them understand that the interview would be scheduled only if you submit the PCC
You need a PCC from the local passport office, and one from the local police office (City Police commissioner office/SP office)

I filled the DS-230 with a blue ink pen. Would this be a problem? Would it be sent back as an RFE?
Also, I had sent the AOS documents and DS-230 packets a couple of weeks back, and still the status in the Voice response system is : "A packet of information has been sent to you on June 7th....". How long does it usually take for the NVC to update the status in the system?
-
I did this a couple of weeks back.
You need to get the PCC from the Passport Office as well as from the local police authority (it could be the SP office or Commissioner office depending on your location).
For the Passport Office, you can download the Application for miscellaneous services on Indian passport and fill it up. You will need to fill it up(mention the PCC is for USA), attach a copy of your passport, give 3 photographs, pay Rs.300 and give the passport at the passport office. I got the PCC in the same day.
For the Police office, you need to give a written letter with 4 photographs, with copy of your passport and another identity proof. The polic would come to your house for verification. I got the PCC in 3 days.

After waiting for almost 6 months, I finally got my Green Card last week!! It didn't help much talking to the first level or even the second level helpline people. So I took an InfoPass and went to the local visa office, and I got the GC one week from then!
Thanks to all who gave me advice on this regard!
I also got my unrestricted SSN card.
