  1. My MIL came for 5 months last year. It was very easy for her to get the visa. From the time we submitted the online application to the time she had the visa in hand was about 3 weeks. To the interview she brought a copy of the title to her house and an invitation letter that we sent along with copies of our recent paystubs. We stated in the letter that we would be providing financially for her entire stay. I also emailed a copy of the letter with the paystubs directly to the consulate, but I don't know if that was necessary. My husband's uncle also applied for and received the visa at the same time, but he has not used it yet. Both of them are over 60.

You might run into more difficulty getting tourist visas for young, single relatives, especially males. Are these niece and nephew adults?

Thanks Jenn. His nephew is 15 and his niece is about 24. She's a nurse and has a good job, and is also studying at the university so could show that she is registered for fall term and needs to be back for that. We are worried they won't get them, but want to at least try before he's too old. We're having my son and his girlfriend come down from Portland, and hoping my oldest son can get his 3 year old for that time period, so we can get everyone together for a big family get-together.

Did you use a template of a letter from here, or something or just write one on your own. Anything special we should say?

  3. Congratulations. Did the IO have you in the office when your husband was interviewed?. I have heard that spouses are not asked to come in the interview room for the citizenship interview.

I was in there. I didn't get up to go because we had seen many people before us get told that their spouses could not go in. Abdel asked if I could go, and the guy let him come get me "for moral support." When we sat down at his desk and he laid our folder on the desk I saw a note stuck on the file that said "IBIS HIT" so I'm guessing he wanted to really drill us to make sure our marriage was valid. He actually questioned me quite a bit of the time.

Once he finished the drilling part, he went on to the interview for citizenship, and told me I was not allowed to talk during that part only provide moral support. I reached over and rubbed Abdel's back a couple of times when he was nervous on the questions. He knew the answers just could feel the pressure of what was riding on getting them right.

We did see some others go in with spouses but most did not.

  4. Abdel is now a citizen! He ended up wearing his dress clothes for everything which turned out good because we only had an hour between the interview and swearing in. He was going to wear his tie but the mouse battery on the laptop is dead so trying to stop and replay the youtube video on how to tie it was driving him nuts. I have no idea where the tie landed. I wore a suit. It was good we dressed up because we only saw maybe 2 or 3 people not dressed up. They swore in 152 people from 50 different countries today.

We had never had an interview throughout the entire process so the guy really drilled us today. This is my fourth marriage so he was trying to make sure I hadn't been paid to marry Abdel I guess. All he had to do was ask who drove up here and why to get enough of the reality of our marriage out of us. (I drove because his driving makes me crazy) We made him smile discussing it.

Abdel was really nervous during the questions, but did great on them and only had to answer 6. I wasn't allowed to talk during that part of the interview.

Now it's time to go out and celebrate!

  5. Hey VJers,

I just wanted to update here & provide my experience in the event that it helps someone. I naturalized today and am so happy that my journey is over!

My interview was scheduled for 9:20am in Atlanta. I arrived at 8:45. There was a small line getting through security. My interview letter & greencard was checked. Purse and documents into the x-ray tray. Shoes off, too. My metal headband set-off the security door frame thingymajig. Off with the head band and success. Went up to the second floor. As you come out the elevator, take a right to check in at the window. Very Friendly Lady there and she sent me up to the 3rd floor. Arrive at the third floor and went to the window to check in. A not very friendly lady there told me to sit near the TV and wait for my name. Honestly, I would sit in the middle of the room as there is no PA system which makes listening for your name a little stressful. My name was called at about 9:40.

My IO was polite and pleasant. When I got to his office he asked me to remain standing and raise my right hand. He swore me in and then we sat down. He pulled out my file - complete with I-751 & N400 documents. He took up my conditional Green Card and my 10 year Green Card. He asked if I wanted to change my name. He asked if I was still married, my date of birth, address, SS #, telephone number, place of work, anniversary date, confirmed my husband's name, checked the copy I sent of my husband's birth certificate. Then he went through the list of questions on the N400 application form such as: have you ever been arrested, involved in a terrorist group, are you willing to bear arms if required, etc. He did not ask to look at any of the documents I had brought with me.

After that, we moved on to the English portion of the test. I had to read: What do we pay the government?

I had to write: We pay taxes. (This sentence is provided and you are not expected to know the answer).

The 6 civics questions I was asked were:

    1. When do men have to register for selective service?

    2. Name 1 state that borders Canada.

    3. What is freedom of religion?

    4. When was the Constitution written?(be careful not to confuse this similar date to the Declaration of Independence)

    5. What ocean is on the West coast of the USA?

    6. How many senators are there?

He said congratulations, I had passed the tests. He asked if I would like to attend the oath ceremony that day. I said, "Yes, please!". He said that another officer would check my file and that I was to wait on the second floor. If the second officer agreed with my IO's decision, then I could attend the oath ceremony at 2pm. I waited on the second floor for almost 2 hours. Thankfully DH had brought a book to read, which I appropriated. My name was called and I collected my appointment letter for 2pm. DH & I went for lunch. It was then 12:10ish.

1:20 we return. There was a substantial line through security. Head band off this time! Went up to the 2nd floor to check in with Nice Lady. Am told DH has to wait and I am sent to an officer who checks my appointment notice. I am told to take a seat with the other people taking the oath. Waited a while, then we start filing into the oath ceremony room. We are shown our naturalization certificates, one-by-one, and told to confirm the information such as name, DOB, gender. Slow process. When I take my seat, on it is a little American flag; a book titled 'The Citizen's Almanac'; a congratulatory letter from USCIS outlining how to obtain a passport, how to notify SS administration, and how to register to vote; a booklet containing the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution of America; a paper with the Oath of Allegiance.

Not sure what time it is now but I am reading through the material and the Oath Ceremony Room is slowly filing up. We are given the opportunity for a potty break ~ accepted! Get back, wait a while longer. Finally, someone comes in and starts a video. Towards the end of this, friends & family enter the room and start taking photos. An officer comes out and starts the ceremony. She congratulates us, we sing the Star Spangled Banner, she tells us that there are 187 applicants from 50 countries present. She calls out the countries and we stand when we hear our country of origin. We take the Oath of Allegiance. We all say the Pledge of Allegiance. End of ceremony. We are told that we MAY make black & white copies of our Naturalization Certificates for our records. We start filing out and collect our Certificates of Naturalization.

3:19 I am back in my car, a United States' Citizen!

I hope I didn't leave anything out. Good luck to everyone still on their journeys!

Thank you so much for posting this detailed information. My husbands interview is in Atlanta tomorrow and now I know what to expect.

  6. I think as long as you don't show up in flip-flops and shorts you should be fine. I didn't see anyone wearing suit and tie when I went for the interview. (I didn't have my oath yet...)

Thanks for the responses. Atlanta seems to do the swearing in the same day, so he's taking his dress clothes and having them in our hotel room, which is within walking distance of the office, so he can go change if needed.

  7. When we filed all of the previous packages, I put them together, but this time, for the N400, I taught Abdel how to do it. I briefly glanced over everything to make sure it was all there, then he mailed it. The next day I found the copy of our marriage license that I had made at work, still in my bag. We had forgotten to include it in the package. It was listed in the cover letter, but wasn't behind it.

I was really worried and even took the original with us when we went to his biometrics, to see if they wanted to make a copy there to add to his file. The gentleman who processed us there said to not worry, just take a copy to the interview. Sure enough, a few weeks later we got a letter telling us that it was missing from the file, please bring it to the interview.

  8. We finally got our interview letter!

  11. I'm not sure I'd use the photo sheets. The first thing they have to do is make a copy of your file, so anything that will prevent them from putting a pile in the copy machine slot is removed.

I recently helped a friend with his fiancee package and he put a postdated check (which I told him not to do!) so they sent it back for a good check. They sent back the entire package, with all of the divider pages removed. We had printed his pictures like queendlee said, and they were still in there.

  12. I just wanted to add that we got an RFE on our Adjustment of Status because I mailed the file in February of that year but didn't send the previous years tax returns because I hadn't done them yet. They made us send them and we were approved really fast after they got them, so don't see this as the end of the world, just a little speedbump.

  13. I've always sent lots of pictures, mounted (or inserted in a word document) 2 to a page with captions, and we've always gotten approved quickly once our file was touched. Think about it - the job of approving files has to be really boring. Pictures can make their day go faster, and facial expressions say a whole lot.

Of course send all the other evidence too. Correspondence addressed to both of you at the same address is good too. I only had two things - a postcard from my mom and a thank-you card for a wedding gift, but I think they might have helped. Put the envelope that shows the address and postmark too.

Do you have cell phones on the same bill? Or any joint utility bills? 401K with spouse as beneficiary is a good one.

  14. Abdel smoked when we met, but quit within a week cold turkey when he found out I didn't like it. I've never smoked. He didn't start up again until he was here and started working in a sugar refinery where the only escape from the pure torture of his job was "smoke breaks." Even the boss called them that when he told them they could take one. He's been trying to quit again ever since, but never been successful for more than about 8 days. He even tried Chantix when my employer offered it free but it made him violently sick to his stomach.

He only smokes outside, and smokes about 2 packs in 3 days. He knows I hate it and am allergic to it, but until he's able to get a job away from an environment where breaks are for smoking there really isn't much chance of him quitting and we both know it.

  15. We got Abdel's green card in the mail today. It's dated 3/6/09 - the same day they showed approved online. That was really fast. Hopefully they will get to all of you fast now. I was beginning to give up too, but then this, so hopefully those of you who have been waiting a long time will be approved very soon.

This is really good news for us because Abdel has been a temp at his job now since last June. 2 people have left on his shift but not been replaced, so as soon as they drop the hiring freeze he is next in line to get hired. Like some of you said, the possibility of that happening with a piece of paper that showed him only legal to work for another couple of months wasn't promising, but now maybe it can happen soon.

  16. I used to make Malt-O-Meal, which is a malt flavored cream of wheat, but can't find it now. Abdel loved that, and he eats cream-of-wheat too, if I make it.

I had a good waffle iron that I was using that made a size that fit perfect in the toaster, then I won a George Foreman grill in the Christmas raffle at work and it came with waffle iron plates, so I use that now. Those waffles are really too big though. We already gave away the old waffle iron though so I can't go back to it. The George Foreman ones have to be broken in half to fit in the toaster, or have to be heated up in the toaster oven.

I always either use half whole wheat and half regular flour, then add in wheat germ, or use Fiber One pancake mix. Either way I'm sneaking a little fiber in on Abdel which I figure never hurts anything. He likes them and doesn't complain.

I'll have to try the melwi recipe. Abdel could live on bread and coffee I think.

  17. I usually make a monster batch of waffles for Abdel and freeze them in bags. He eats them for breakfast and snacks during the month until they are gone and I make more. His latest craze is pouring olive oil in a small bowl, adding a scoop of apricot preserves, and dipping chunks of the waffles in that. He also just eats them plain with the olive oil, no preserves. He loves english muffins too - with olive oil.

I just found the Danactive yogurt drink in the tiny bottles (I think 3 something ounces each) - 8 to a pack, and he says those are perfect for him. He drinks them any time - even as his drink with a meal.

Once in a while on the weekend I cook a big breakfast for us, but he usually sleeps until well after noon on the weekends, so it's more like brunch.

During the week, it's just the waffles or some other bread and coffee for breakfast because I'm already at work and that's what he will fix for himself. Even a lot of time on the weekend though, that's still all he wants when he first wakes up.

Oh, something else the man loves - corndogs! He loves cornbread - eats it like cake, and to him corndogs are just the best food ever for a quick meal.

  18. I checked my status and the message changed. It said that my case was sent to a USCIS office for approval. ??? That's where it was since May, a USCIS office.

That's good news. We got touched about 2 weeks before we got approved, but some people had even less time between.

We got the "approved" touch and e-mail on 3/6, but were also touched on 3/8 and 3/9. Hopefully that means my husbands card got mailed and we'll get it very soon.

We still haven't gotten a paper letter of approval in the mail yet though.

  19. Mary, I would say do send the pictures. I've always sent a lot - over 50 - and things so far have gone good for us. The way I see it, "a picture paints a thousand words" and seeing the two of you together in real life situations with each others family is pretty good proof you had a valid marriage.

My pictures are also on the computer. I inserted 2 to a page in a Word document and put captions under them saying who was in them and the event and stuff. I used Christmas with family, at the hospital with my son and his newborn son, us after a coworkers weddding, etc. When you have other family of yours or his in the picture, and coworkers and things like that, it definitely shows more proof that you're living your life together. It's hard to pay over 20 people to pretend to spend a day together for Christmas and act like your marriage is real, especially children. Facial expressions sure say a lot.
