  1. Hello All,

I need some advice and confirmation on how to file 2011 income tax.

I have done my own tax in the last several years using TurboTax.

This year is a bit more involve since I got married.

After some reading on this site, the following is my understanding.

I need some advice or confirmation from those that have used TurboTax to do their own tax.

Looks like the best option is to file Married Filing Jointly.

My wife does not have a SSN yet so I will have to submit a W-7 form.

My understanding is that I can submit the W-7 at the same time and along with my joint income tax.

Also, my understanding is that NRA can be written in the SSN field for her.

I understand that I will have to mail everything in (not electronically).

Would it be better to wait and get her SSN then file my income tax.

How long does it usually takes to get SSN?

Would getting the W-7 before getting her SSN create more problem later when we apply for her SSN?

    Please advise.

As always, thank you all for your continued advice and support!

  2. My fiancee and I are about to apply for our marriage license. We want to change her name (both first and last) due to wrong spelling and other reasons.

When is the best time to do this?

Can we use her existing name for the marriage license now and change it later in other processes?

Or should we change it now? Can we even change her name at this stage (marriage license)?

Thank you much for any help.

  3. Once you been interviewed and they requested supporting documents, the letter you receieve should specify when you can bring back the info.

I believe you can be back every week on Monday or Wednesday in the afternoon.

If you are not in a hurry to go back, I would email the Bangkok consulate explaining your situation and get a solid answer before going back to save you a trip.

    Best luck!

  4. When your fiancee went for the interview, what exactly she brought w/ her? did she bring her household registration and thai id and her visa was denied?

sighs.. the problem is his village is so far away from the town.... and he left that place more than 10 years ago.... not even sure if mom's still alive or not :( how would we find her??? omg... this stresses me out...

Keep in mind that each case is different. For some, having just the household and Thai ID were fine and they were approved. In our case, my fiance has her household registration and Thai ID at the interview, but we were missing these:

    1. A page of a form was missing (with questions as to where she lived since she was 16 yrs old, etc).

    2. She had forgotten the original document (first certificate of birth) from the Amphur. Also the copy of this document did not state her place of birth, very important.

    3. We knew each other less than a year, short according to CO.

All these gave the CO some doubts and so my fiancee's interview was a bit harder than others.

After the interview she was given a yellow paper requesting the following:

"Please submit evidence of your place of birth. The certificate of birthplace(baay raprong gan kut) should state where you were born. Please submit the original certificate of birthplace, not a photocopy. You may also be able to provide certified copies of official documents from the time that you obtained Thai citizenship.

For further inguiries, please email to visabkk@state.gov."

She went home and got the requested document from the Amphur, went back to the embassy the following week and had her visa 2 days later.

You can email the embassy also and ask them if you have certain question. I have found that to be very helpful.

Please read the following topic that I started when we were going through this.

    http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/327023-urgent-help-needed-regarding-birth-certificate/page__p__4878926__fromsearch__1#entry4878926

Hope this help and not cause you more worries.

  5. He told me his birth was never registered. But he has Thai national identification and i think he does have household registration as well. Can he really use these two documents in place of birth certificate?

    joonphon,

See Packet 3 for more information.

My fiancee just went through this. She was denied her visa during interview because of her certificate of birth.

For additional documents, your fiance can go with his mom to the Amphur of the place he lives. His mom can testify that she gave birth to him at the place of his birth. Amphur can write a document with seal stating his place of birth according to the his mom.

Any certified copy of the document when he applied for Thai citizenship and household registration helps.

Make sure the document clearly states his place of birth and bring the original documents to the interview. These two items bit us during my fiancee's interview

    Good luck!

  6. After 8 months and 8 days, my fiancee finally got her visa!

VJ is awesome and I am thankful to have accidentally stumbled onto this website one confused day.

I didn't know much at the beginning of this journey. There were much doubts and plenty of fear. But through all the wisdom and kind advices here and knowledge, I was encouraged and educated.

Thank you all for your generous advices.

I have learned so much here in 8 months. The details in the Consulate Reviews were very helpful.

I know this is just the beginning and I will surely continue to seek the help and advice of those who have gone before me.

    Thank you all once again.

Best wishes to those awaiting their visas.

  7. I think for what you went through they will not ask for other documents. Pui received a yellow paper and so did a lady Pui met who was going having her interview the same day received one as well. They both returned with the requested documents and received their visas.

I think the only time they would do something like that is if you were to give more evidence to the CO when you were being interviewed and they had no time to look at or verify. If you gave the evidence in the morning when you first enter the embassy I do not think you would encounter that. Good luck tomorrow.

    Thank you Andy.

  9. My girlfriend had only her family house paper (tambien baan) and her ID as evidence in place of a birth certificate. She passed the interview at the embassy yesterday (yea!) but I've heard when we file for adjustment of status they want a proper birth certificate. True? If she isn't able to get a proper one from the ampur before she leaves for the US, can her Mom get a copy for her and send here? Thanks.

    Congratulations tilac999!

I think it's probably best that she goes with her mom. My fiancee was asked why she needed it.

  10. Thank you all. I really appreciate all your responses.

I feel much better about the situation now.

I just want to share the request letter from the CO:

Please submit evidence of your place of birth. The certificate of birthplace (baay raprong gan kut) should state where you were born. Please submit the original certificate of birthplace, not a photocopy. You may also be able to provide certified copies of official documents from the time that you obtained your Thai citizenship.

Basically, she did not have the original certificate of birth in the interview. Also, the certificate did not say where she was born.

My fiancee will mostly like ask for a certified copy of the official documents from the time that she obtained her Thai citizenship. The document should state her place of birth.

  11. We didn't have a birth certificate either because the office had burnt down years ago. But we followed the instructions on the packet 3 and 4 and got a letter of birth from the Amphur office and a certified translated copy of the family book. That seemed to work.

    Thank you Virginian61.

At this point, she will may have to go back to the Amphur that gave her the original and see what other document he can write for her.

  12. She can go to her Amphur or city hall & get what is required. Did they keep her passport? If so they will have placed the visa in it. If not she will have to go back again after submitting the document.

    Thank you Ning.

I forgot to ask my fiancee if they kept her passport, probably not. She has to go back Friday or Monday with the requested birth certificate.

Sorry, I don't know the technically terms for all these officials. She originally went to the official (Amphur?) in the town that she was born but he refused to make her one, telling her she has to go the official of the town she is has been residing. So she went there and got a document with her parents as witness as to where she was born.

Unfortunately, she didn't have this original document at the interview. I think that is where they are giving her a hard time. Others that she has talked to has similar document and got a visa without a problem.

  13. Hello fellow VJ,

My fiancee just got done with her interview.

Started 7:30 am and got out 11:30 am.

She was drilled pretty good. She was at window 5, interviewed by the American lady with short hair.

She said the American lady was fine to her. Later, she had to get a Thai lady to speak to my fiancee as she does not speak English.

Also, she was drilled by good by the fact that we only knew each since last September (less than a year).

My fiancee had sent a copy of the letter with witnesses (her parents) where she was born, but not an actual birth certificate.

The American lady asked a Thai lady to question my fiancee further on this matter. Even after my fiancee explained that the official in the province that she was born would not provide her a birth certificate. The official in her province where she is residing now gave her a certificate with her parents as witnesses.

Unfortunately, she placed a copy of this certificate in Packet 3 and forgot to take the original to the interview.

The Thai lady really drilled her on this and insisted that she must go back to the official where she was born to get some kind of birth certificate. Is what this is requesting even valid???

    Sorry, not making much sense...

I remembered reading in one of the post that prior to certain year, you can't get a true birth certificate. Only a certificate with witnesses stating that you were born there.

Anyone with information on this matter, please reply with links of previous posts and any information would be greatly appreciated.

My fiancee is heading home. She was told to come back Friday or Monday. We are not sure what to get and don't want to waste time going back.

If there is an official document that a real birth certificate can not be created then we can at least bring that back as proof to show the interviewing officer.

Thank you so much for your help.
