  1. GBH as in:

Grievous bodily harm (often abbreviated to GBH) is a technical term used in English criminal law which has become synonymous with the offences that are created by sections 18 and 20 of the Offences against the Person Act 1861.

The distinction between these two sections is the requirement of specific intent for section 18.

The offence under section 18 is variously referred to as "wounding with intent" or "causing grievous bodily harm with intent".[1] The words "with intent" refer to the specific intent required for this offence.

The offence under section 20 is variously referred to as "unlawful wounding",[2] "malicious wounding"[3] or "inflicting grievous bodily harm".[4]

    Yes

  2. If the possible jail time exceeds one year for whatever crime was committed, then he may well be ineligible for having committed a Crime Involving Moral Turpitude (CIMT), for which he would need a waiver, one that might be nearly impossible to get given the recent nature of his crime (GHB?).

Sorry i noticed the mistake the title I meant GBH

  3. Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me on this situation.

My Brother from the UK (UK citizen) would like to visit me (UK citizen permanent US resident) in the US.

He got charged with GBH in the UK almost 2 years ago. He was charged and given 2 years suspended sentence, which is due to be up in a months time.

Can he still visit me easily? obviously the UK is under the VWP does he need to be approved for an additional visa? Would get rejected at US customs?

Should he wait till the suspended sentence is done?

    thanks for your help

  4. Hi,

I know this thread is old but I'm really struggling to find good information on this.

I am in the US (california) on CR1 have been here an year and procrastinated doing my drivers test.

I eventually found out i can get a temporary DL using my UK license.

The thing is its just a bit of paper that has hardly any info on. My question is, how long can I use this temporary DL for?

some say 60 days some say a year

    any ideas?

  5. Hi well I have finally made it into the US.

But now all the admin starts, to get our lives rolling.

I would like to get my social number as soon as possible. Will they send this directly to me or do I have to go to the office.

What are peoples experience with this?

Also, I would like to get a bank account setup and all other stuff like that. If i don't have a social number is it not possible to do this?

It has always been said that with the CR1/IR1 visa you can work and do everything immediately, it this strictly true? as you have to wait for things to arrive in the post?

    Thanks

  6. You MUST enter the US before the visa expires--in your case April 2012. When you enter the US, they will place an I-551 stamp in your passport--this is your temporary green card which is good for one year.

No--the visa is good for one entry only, and it will not be reissued when you get a new passport.

The green card is not a visa. It gives you the right to travel and re-enter the US, to get a job, to get a drivers license, open a bank account--all the normal things of living. It does not allow you to vote, run for office, and other political sorts of things.

You can be deported, but it has to be something really bad. After three years you can apply for citizenship if you like, and once granted you can not be deported, you can live outside the country of you like, and with teh exception of running for some very offices, you can be involved in the political system.

You go thru the US citizen and legal resident line--even when you enter with your new visa for the first time.

So.... is the I-551 stamp the visa? You say the green card is not the visa and the stamp in my passport currently, is only good for one entry only.

what is the part that they check when I go in and out of the US later in life?

I must be able to renew my passport and still have the 'visa' in it? Other wise what other proof do I have if the green card is not the visa?

  7. Hi, well... it's all coming to an end and I will finally be reunited on Sunday

But.. i still have a questions..

I know I am on a CR visa which has to have the conditions removed 90 days before the 2 years. I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

    Q's

    • My IV stamped in my passport express in april next year. I understand that this is just to prove the visa until my green card arrives? But do they update the stamp in my passport?

    • What if i need to renew my passport in a years time, do they put the stamp in the new one?

    • Is my green card my main proof of visa?

    • What kind of rights do I have being conditional? i.e. can they deport me for nearly any reason? what if i got arrested for something minor?

    • Do i continue to go through the foreign person line when I enter the US?

anything else i should be aware of?

    thanks

  8. Well I had my interview yesterday and was APPROVED :)

    Here is my experience:

My interview was scheduled for 8:30am but like many people in this forum I attempted to get to the Embassy as soon as possible and was queued up at 7am.

At 7:30am I went through security and received my number from the reception desk (I-901).

Once I got into the Embassy the screens were still booting up and the "counters" for the Embassy staff and Consular Officers were still closed. At around 8am numbers begun to be called out (about 7 N-numbers to every 1 I-number) and I was called up quite quickly.

I was greeted by a friendly member of staff who did take issue with my passport photos I submitted to the NVC (they were on a light grey background instead of a white background) but she used them anyway. Apart from that the first desk was relatively easy, she just ticked off the documents I had submitted and we chatted about her daughter's experience so far at university, so fairly relaxed. I was then given the pink courier form and told to sit down and wait to be called for the visa interview.

About an hour later I was called up for the interview. I put my hand up and swore all the information was true, I was then asked to sign Part II of the DS-230 and then asked: How did you and your spouse meet? How did the relationship develop? Was your J-1 visa subject to the 2-year HRR? She then said "Everything seems great here so I will go ahead and approve this visa". Cue HUGE smile and many thank yous.

I then paid the courier and left at 9:05am. All in all, it was quite painless and I can honestly say all the worrying and anxiety was not warranted!]

As to the pink and blue slips:

After the first counter: a blue slip indicates an N-number and a pink slip an I-number. The reason to distinguish is so when you get to the courier desk and give a pink slip they will tell you about the brown package, if you have a blue slip they have no need to tell you about it because you will not have one!

After the second counter: If you have a blue slip it means you have either been- refused, placed into admin processing or refused pending the submission of additional documents.

Hope that makes sense and best of luck to everyone!

Thanks for the info on pink and blue slips.

I got the pink slip and I notice in tracking my passport is due to be delivered tomorrow.

But... no one said anything to be about a brown package? What is this?

  9. Congratulations! Good to hear things went smoothly. I have NO idea what those slips mean I thought the blue slip was something you got when you were actually being interviewed and were getting the "no go". Thanks for posting so quickly afterward. So when do you think you will be coming back?

Well, the courier service states 3-5 working days, you can opt for a Saturday delivery for more money.

When I first went up to the interview part, he asked me if I'd made travel plans, I said not yet.

When I went to the courier desk to pay, I said I was keen to go on Sunday or monday. She didn't like my chances and asked If I had told them I had travel plans, I said:

    - no, should I have?

    - yes maybe that would make them process it faster but its too late now.

So.. she recommended i get a basic service. I opted for before 8am, a little extra. Then you can track it online. She said when it appears online, it means its gonna be delivered the next day. So if it comes up friday, I can phone up and pay more for the saturday service.

Anyway. really I don't think i will get out there till tuesday. But hey, can't have the world.

I would recommend people telling them you have travel plans even if you don't. Although I was asked this before I was approved so don't know if it would go down badly.

  10. peeing yourself yet? LOL

    Haha.. thanks.

    Well.....

    Approved!!

Just got home, it was a pretty nervy morning. Was outta there but 10.45. Entered around 8am. It seemed like ages as I didn't have a watch.

Will post a detailed review later.

Really its pretty simple but that doesn't stop the nerves at the fact someone else is in control of your future. I was wasn't scared about me messing it up, but the 'what ifs', like we didn't fill in and form correctly or they lost something.

First you get a number and wait to be called.

from what I gather IR1/CR1 numbers start with I XXX (mine was I 915)

There are loads of N numbers (I think these are all the work visas and maybe the Fiancee visas)

These go pretty quickly and i counted 100 went passed before my number was called to give you an idea of timings.

Your number gets called and they have your whole file there. Then the commuter crashed which made me nervous as I didn't know if it was just a general fault or because of something in our case. I was told to sit back down while they sort it.

Called back up and they take your finger prints. and give you a courier form to fill in.

I sat back down and began to fill in the form. I then noticed I was filling in a pink form and everyone else's was blue. I had heard stuff on pink clips and blue slips on here, but hadnt read enough to know what that meant. (still not sure) I guessed it was because nearly everyone else was a N number. Then I saw a girl I noticed had and I number leaving and her slip was BLUE. This got me really scared and I thought that was it. I was denied. No one had a pink slip at all.

A shorter wait this time, and my number was called.

Gave my finger prints again, she asked me to raise my right hand and swear I had told the truth to the best of my knowledge.

    She asked:

    • Where we met

    • What my wife was doing there

    • where my wife was now

    • what does she do

    • why did we get married in the US

    • was it nice who was there

    All very conversational and relaxed

She said you're fine and approved take your slip to organise your courier.

    thanks

    Ha

    easy

Thanks so much everyone on here, couldn't have done it so quick without you all. Just goes to show you can do it on your own, with a little help from friends. I swear I made minor mistakes everywhere. There is so much nervous tension around all these forums and this process, its too much and i think its not needed. There is leeway and it all can be worked out.

Anyone know what the pink and blue slips mean? maybe nothing?

  11. We don't have DS-160 that's a non immigrant application...the K1 is officially a non immigrant visa as it doesn't give them the ability to immigrate without filing the AOS so we don't need that. Are you super excited? Less than a week to go!

    Right thanks.

Nervous, excited, scared, impatient. I think this last part of waiting has been the hardest. I've held off booking a flight so having nothing to work towards (like i have done in the past) doesn't help.

    Anyway, not long now.

  12. Hi Guys,

Just wanted to check something. I was just reading some of the embassy reviews of recent interviews. I noticed this

"An embassy worker was calling to everyone that they had to have their appointment letter, receipt and a ds160. Obviously that is not on the k1 list for interview"

I am not a K1 applicant but am wondering what the DS160 is? something I've missed?

Not long now till my interview and trying to get prepared.

  13. Just wondering which email address you used to contact the embassy? I rang the inquiry line and I think they gave me a different email address than normal as I didn´t have to enter a code. They also said that they don´t have my case details in their system yet- maybe this is why they haven´t replied yet. I´m trying to bring my interview date forward due to work opportunities when I arrive.

    I used this one

    LondonConsular@state.gov

  14. Thomas did you get an actual letter in the post or an email?

I received an actual letter. But I think this maybe just because I changed my interview date. They said in the email they would write to confirm the change.

Although the letter did not state anything about the change it just said that they were ready for final processing and my interview date was the new date.

    Make sense?

  15. thomaskendall is your packet from NVC already sent to US embassy? We tried doing that, after couple of weeks we got a response saying they don't have our packet yet. I called NVC on wednesday last week and they said packet is not even sent yet from NVC.

I havent a clue if our packet has been sent. How would I know?

I did receive a letter from the Embassy yesterday, saying they are ready for the final stage (interview) and its been scheduled for October 5th. I guess they must have our packet in order to give us an earlier interview date.

  16. You wont get a packet 3 that's for K1 visas. The packet 4 is your interview letter. I received mine probably a week ago at least.

Ok thanks, won't worry about packet 3 then.

Yes I have received the interview letter about a week ago too.

But I read on here the contents of packet 4

    Appointment Letter

    Instructions for interview/medical

    Medical Questionnaire

Payment slip for £65 for visa processing

Didn't get the medical questionnaire in it. Had to DL it.

    Payment for £65 ???

I havent received anything in the post throughout the whole NVC process.

    emails say correct address.

  17. little secret i was told at knightsbridge, get your medical asap, our case is now nearing CC and my hubby has had his medical, they told him the embassy will get the results an log them into comp, then when nvc go to schedule the interview they will see the medicals done an instead of the standard 6-8week wait they give u, ull find they give u an interview withing 2-3 weeks of CC, also we had our case expedited at USCIS, got NVC done quick so didnt need to ask there but will defo be askn for a closer interview due to the reasons case was expedited, so theres ways to get the interview sooner, medical being done before nvc cc is a big one, having a genuine reason to get interview asap is another, good luck to all my fellow brits :D chris

This could well be true, I have not had my medical as I have been in the US. I get back to the UK on Saturday and will try and sort the medical ASAP.

Then I am hoping to email the embassy asking for an earlier interview date.

re: the police certificate @ medical

I have heard somewhere on here that they accept a photocopy.
