Newark Mayor: Sanctuary policies will not change - police department will not do the work of the INS

I think it comes down to funding more than anything. A big city like NYC has more impetus to clean up its streets than an economically deprived backwater.

Newark is hardly a backwater, is it? Plus its close proximity to NYC makes it somewhat of a risk

to New Yorkers as well.

I was exaggerating a little there - but there's no doubt that Newark is an economically deprived area and has been for many years. Some parts of that city are like a different world - boarded up houses, burned out cars and roads that haven't been resurfaced in years (if not decades).

If the funding isn't there - and judging by the above it hasn't been for a long, long time then its hard to see what can be done. Especially as it isn't just down to the police department to enforce immigration law - the onus is really on cross-agency participation. Again if that isn't there - then the mayor can't be expected to make claims he knows he doesn't have the power to honour.

P.S. I had the displeasure of driving to the Oranges last night through Newark....and I'm still alive

to tell the tale.

We went through there a while back (and found out later that there had been a mass murder the same night) - South Orange (at least the part we went to) seemed mroe or less ok, but the areas immediately around there are not places you'd want to break down in.
