Starbucks postpones store plans for India

By Melissa Allison

Seattle Times business reporter

Starbucks has decided to postpone its entry into India, which was scheduled for this year.

The Seattle coffee shop chain withdrew its application with the Indian government to operate stores there, but a spokesman said Starbucks is not abandoning plans to do business in India.

"We're committed to having a presence in the market," said Brandon Borrman. "This is just a temporary decision as we assess our options and make revisions."

The company declined to say why it withdrew the application.

This spring, Starbucks revised its application for entry into India, according to The Hindu, an Indian newspaper. The chain's initial application was rejected because of concerns about its India ownership structure, which was to be divided among Starbucks, an Indian retailer and Starbucks' business partner in Indonesia, the report said.

Starbucks opened its first stores in Egypt and Brazil late last year and in Romania earlier this year. It has said it plans to open in Russia in the next couple months.

Given the success of Barista's, Starbucks can make a killing in India.
Do Indian's fancy burned coffee as much as Americans?
South Indians (who actually grow, and brew coffee) generally don't like it burned :P.

Can't say about North Indians, as they can rarely be trained to brew coffee right in the first place (I've actually tried to do this, so...).

Starbucks/Barista's was never about the coffee.

In India, hanging out at Barista's is a status symbol - means you're young and successful. The place attracts others who are young and successful. Great place to meet girls. The one in Calcutta is always packed, is overpriced beyond imagination, and the girls are HOT.

I'll make sure to stop in at a Barista's should I ever travel to India.

Explains plenty that this Barista's is in Calcutta--with coffee, Bengalis are basically akin to North Indians.

Srini,

Your ignorance of contemporary India is showing.

Barista is present in the following South Indian cities- Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Hyderabad.

In Chennai, they have 9 branches.

Oh, and 20 branches in Bangalore.

I fear the India you remember is long gone, old man ;)

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
