I was wondering exactly the same thing - I could swear I've seen a lot of people post that it's best to get the SSN before you get married, or you might have to wait until you have your EAD...? I was thinking I must have imagined that - so was glad to see you say the same thing I was thinking!

Well in some case for example if you're keeping your name it is best to get your ssn as soon as possible, that way after you get married you can apply for AOS/EAD right away since you already have your ssn.

In my case, since I was changing my name, I waited after married to receive my ssn, which delayed my AOS, since I had to wait for my ssn to arrive. But if I had asked for my ssn before I got married on my maiden name, I believe I would have to wait anyway after getting married to change my ssn to my married name so I could apply for AOS/EAD. In my case the easiest thing to do was wit to change my name and then apply for ssn so I could start the AOS on my married name, that way wouldn't cause any problems in the future.

Thank you. :) Am even more confused now... I had it in my head that the thing to was apply for a SSN straight away (well, about a week after arriving in the US) and that it was best to do it before getting married rather than after. Now I don't know! Or maybe it doesn't really matter.... hmm. I will be changing my name, definitely. So.... hmm, must think.

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png
