Shop assistants at a US store that had been recently robbed twice mistook a drunk customer for a robber and threw a bag of money at him.

Workers at the convenience store in Waterloo, Iowa, thought the rambling man who had his hand in his pocket was about to hold them up.

They grabbed money out of the till, stuffed it into a bag and threw it at the 32-year-old man who left it alone and walked out of the shop.

Police officers later found him standing in the street near the store with watery eyes and slurred speech, reports the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

Capt John Beckman said the store had been held up in August and again in September and the workers had thought it was happening again.

But the man, who had been "ranting" about the previous robberies, was merely drunk, and the robbery suspicions were a mistake, he added.

The 32-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication, disorderly conduct and interference.
