They are and what is more troubeling than the actual market share at this point is the trend.

Actually (surprisingly!) the trend is reversing.

Not for GM and Chrysler, but Ford is doing really well.

June 2008 June 2009

GM: 21.9% -> 20.2%

Chrysler: 9.9% -> 7.9%

Ford: 14.0% -> 17.2%

Toyota: 16.2% -> 15.3%

Honda: 12.0% -> 11.7%

As well as some of Honda's and Toyota's shares?

Not really seeing that the overall market share of the big three declined half a percent.

But the combined market share of Toyota and Honda has declined as well.

Are you saying that Ford didn't win over any Toyota/Honda customers - only those who "buy American"?

Other winners:

Nissan: 6.4% -> 6.8%

Hyundai: 4.2% -> 4.4%

Kia: 2.4% -> 3.1%

Subaru: 1.5% -> 2.2%

Mercedes: 1.6% -> 1.8%

Volvo: 0.6% -> 0.8%

VW: 3.8% -> 4.0%

Audi: 0.7% -> 0.9%

BMW: 1.8% -> 1.9%

When you get into the details, I'm sure that Ford attracted some customers that previously owned an import. But by the same token, some domestic owners (from any of the big three) switched to imports. I was just saying that net, the big three combined kept their market share fairly stable over the last year with Ford gaining just shy of what GM and Chrysler have lost.

Today's news:

Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co.’s July U.S. sales rose 2.3 percent.

Ford, the second-largest U.S. automaker, hadn’t reported a monthly increase since November 2007.

The Dearborn, Michigan- based company said it sold 165,279 cars and trucks in July, compared

with 161,530 a year earlier.

Other major automakers reported declines, including:

19 percent for General Motors Co.

9.4 percent for Chrysler Group LLC.

25 percent for Nissan Motor Co.

17 percent for Honda Motor Co.

20 percent for Toyota Motor Corp. (estimate)

GM said its sales of cars and light trucks fell to 188,156 in July from 233,340 a year earlier.

The Detroit-based company exited bankruptcy July 10, with government assistance.

Chrysler reported a decline to 88,900 from 98,109. The Auburn Hills, Michigan-based

automaker emerged from bankruptcy June, also with federal aid.

Honda, based in Tokyo, posted sales of 114,690 cars and light trucks, down from 138,744

a year earlier. Nissan’s sales dropped to 71,847 from 95,319, according to a statement from

the Tokyo-based company.

Toyota Motor Corp., based in Toyota City, Japan, probably will say U.S. sales fell 20 percent,

the average of 3 analysts’ estimates.

Volkswagen AG’s namesake brand reported a sales increase of almost 1 percent to 20,590.

Daimler AG said combined sales of Mercedes-Benz and Smart fell 24 percent to 17,646.

Cash for Clunkers:

LaHood said some 80 percent of the traded-in vehicles are pickups or SUVs, meaning many gas-guzzlers are being taken off the road, and the Ford Focus is a leading replacement vehicle.

Good! The fact that the Ford Focus - and not the Camry or Accord - is a leading replacement vehicle

is an epic turnaround for Ford, which was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy only a few months ago.

Gooooo Ford! :dance:
