Number 6, I was thinking of this ongoing conversation yesterday during my drive to class after work. I believe I found the worst - absolute worst - road in the entire state! It's Long Road in Warren. It looks and feels like it hasn't been paved in decades. And it's barely wide enough for two cars. I actually had to slow down and pull to the side to let another car pass.

However, it is breathtakingly beautiful on both sides. Very 'country' look, which is odd, given that it's in Warren.

If you're ever by Jose's again, check it out.

We're out there all the time - from where we live it is amazing the contrast you get driving a few miles on the Garden State Parkway. Of course Jose Tejas leads back to Linden (with its delightful background of oil refineries). But certainly to judge the entire state on the basis of the industrial district is rather distortive.

I didn't. You're the one who brings Australia into every single thread you post in

....

Perhaps I should judge one of your beloved Australian cities on the basis of its worst neighborhood - cause that's all you're doing here.

Two things. The first point is that it is other people who bring up Australia trying to be smart asses.

Second point is that I only mention Australia, Canada etc as a way of saying what the ###### are people doing here. I am not trying to say or even suggest hey look at this you losers. And by looking at those pics, I seriously forgot how well maintained and clean the infrastructure is in Australia. For example, we have street cleaners cleaning the roads every week in Melbourne. Whereas I have never ever seen that here. I just drove on Constitutional avenue, in the capital, the other day and thought my wheels were going to break off the car.

You have American engineers from NY designing 'mile long' bridges for Dubai while NYC has some of the oldest and crappiest bridges I have seen in the world.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Oh give over - that's exactly what you're doing.

Hey it's not my fault the country is becoming a Mexico; while everyone else is steaming ahead. I am just stating something that is obvious to me coming from abroad. Something that if it received the complete upgrading it desperately needed would not only make it a better place to live in but would also create the jobs this country desperately needs. Everyone else abroad, including London, seems to get it. Dubai clearly gets it..

I'm just disputing the reasons that you seem to go out of your way to trash American communities.

BTW - London is hardly a shining example of modern infrastructure. The British rail and road system hasn't received major reconstruction since WW2. Unless of course you consider the M-25 motorway, which was a national embarrassment when Thatcher opened it in the 80's.

Come on now. I have seen London a number of times. While I don't agree with the fixation to keep the old Victorian style homes etc, it is certainly a very nice city.

What's with the pictures - what do they prove? You couldn't find any with the motorway snarlups? My dad drives all over the country for work - takes him over 3 hours to drive around that b*stard M25 sometimes. A major arterial motorway that's barely 3 lanes - as I say a national embarrasment.

London is nice - but again the underground system hasn't received a major overhaul since WW2. The mayor even hired the guy who fixed the (rather more reliable) NYC subway.

In any case - there are plenty of European cities that leave London in the dust as far as its infrastructure goes - Munich? Hell even Paris has high-speed rail - something that's still dodgy in the UK - where a train fare to Bournemouth can cost you over 30 quid.

yes but in comparison to US cities London is years ahead. At least the roads have properly painted lines. I can see plenty of roads here that have not been touched since the 60's. The last great infrastructure boom in the US.

I think I need to start an international charity fund to contribute to infrastructure here. Maybe we can get a few companies to donate paint, asphalt, street lights and reflectors as a start.

All that London has going for it is - the highest concentration of intelligent CCTV cameras (that can read car number plates), and congestion charging. There isn't much more going for it than that - except for the historical stuff. Its also quite a prohibitively expensive place to live or shop.
