Consulate Review: El Salvador
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : August 5, 2010
Embassy Review : My wife went through the K1 process through the Embassy in San Salvador, El Salvador. I would describe the process as difficult. There are always two interviews in El Salvador, about one week apart. The first interview is basically to submit the paperwork from package 4. This was done my a female Salvadorian national working at the US embassy, who basically screened the paperwork and give you a date and time for the second interview. According to wife this person was very rude and treated my wife like she was an idiot. Even though we were very well prepared and had all the paperwork listed in package 4. She Requested a I-864 from me and my co-sponser, to include tax returns for the current year, bank statements and the rest of of the supporting documents for the next interview in just 1 week!! Normally only a I-134 is needed so this is not normal for a K1 from everything I have and been told. This amounted a completely a unreasonable request. Even through Fedex/UPS/DHL it takes five days plus for anything to get from US to El Salvador, to top it off it was Easter week in El Salvador and the entire country(including the post office) shuts down for the whole week. Also, neither my co-sponser or myself, had submitted are tax returns for 2009 as yet because the tax deadline was still a month in the future. Basically I forced to run around and get my taxes done and ask my co-sponser to do the same(luckly he is a very good friend) and then i was forced to jump on a airplane and hand-carry this information to my wife for her second interview. It is unlikely that most people would have been able to do this, within this time frame. I was only able to do it because I was unemployed and had the time to do this. The second interview was with the consulate officer. This part actually from much better as this person a American and treated my with respect and it went smoothly and we were approved. I will say however that I think we completely lucked out by getting this person. While my wife was waiting she watched many others getting interviewed with Consulate officers that were Salvadorian nationals that really grilled the other people and rejected almost everyone. Perhaps it is just our experience but it appears that the Salvadorian employees at the embassy treat they countrymen very badly, I do not know if this is just jealously or what. The good news is we were approved and grated the K1. We are married now and working through the rest of this process. Good luck, god bless.
Rating : Very Poor

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
