Ade’s appointment was this morning, 9 am. He got there at 8:30. He had the good sense to leave all objects forbidden in his trunk, and put the key in his hide-a-key spot on the car. He left his phone as well. All of these items are forbidden. He had all of his documents in a plastic “Tesco” bag, since back packs, brief cases, and any large containers are forbidden. He noticed when he got in line (or queue as he puts it), there were many people who had phones, iPods, keys, and being turned away. He had to remove his watch, glasses, shoes, belt, and wallet for the scan and security screening. He noticed there were between 150-200 people there waiting in the seats.
No sooner was he through security when he looked up at the board and saw his number was being called! Still holding his belt in his hands, he ran to the window (window 13) and checked in. A chatty, friendly African American woman greeted him and asked for his paperwork. He handed over his documents, and asked if he could put on his belt so his trousers wouldn’t fall down. The nice lady laughed and said sure. She then asked the usual questions: have you ever been in trouble with the law? (no), have you ever been denied a visa before? (no), have you ever been thrown out of a country before? To this, he answered “Not yet!” She laughed again, and asked, “Are you expecting to?” He said, “No!”. She then gave him a ticket and told him to have a seat to await the consulate officer’s interview.
He took a seat among the many other people, and as he was sifting through all of his papers, they called out, “Will a Mr. ______ come to window 17 please?” He was very surprised, because everyone else has posted that this wait can take a couple hours at least. He said he wasn’t sitting there more than two minutes. He went to the window, and found a nice Asian man.
He asked him a hand full of questions:
How did you meet?
Has your fiancé been married before?
Does she have any children?
What do the children do?
(After answering Chris was in school) What school does he attend?
What do you like about Erinn?
He then said, “Congratulations, your visa is approved.”
Ade was then sent for fingerprinting and paying for the mail service to deliver the visa.
They estimated it should be there no later than the 17th.

The Charlotte field office is clean and bright inside. There is ample seating and a TV with the news on. The staff are very professional and friendly. You are required to remove belt and shoes and go through an x-ray before entering (similar to the airport). You then go into a large waiting room and check in at the first window on the left by handing in your letter with the interview date/time on it. You check in with her, and she calls you back up in a few minutes with a number stapled to your letter. The interviewing officer then come through the main door to call you up by your number. Sorry, but spouses cannot go with you (I brought a paperback to read while I waited). They introduce themselves to you and bring you back to a private office.
My husband brought the letter, his greencard and my US birth certificate, and our marriage license. He brought other documents but no others were needed. The officer went over the Yes/No questions from the form, then conducted the civics exam. She then said he was approved and that the oath ceremony would be the following Thursday. She was very approachable and not intimidating. Overall the staff made what could be a stressful day as pleasant as possible. From what I've read others report, the ceremony should be just as nice.
