Review Topic: K1 Visa

My interview was scheduled at 7-30am and I arrived at the embassy at around 7am. There was long line outside the embassy and I had to wait around an hour before they started letting people in. A guard came out and called for people who had an interview scheduled to go inside. I got to skip the line since a lot of people didn't seem to have an interview scheduled. I submitted my letter of appointment at the gate. I was the first person to enter the room. I think they had 11 counters to interview applicants and 2 long benches for people to wait in.

My name was called after 10 mins and there was mean lady on the other side. She asked for my receipt and I explained to her how I couldn't find an option for K1 visa in their website for payment. She told me I probably couldn't appear for the interview today. I told her that the person I talked to on the phone from the visa office told me I could pay at the embassy. She told me to wait so she could check if that was the case. She asked me to take out all the documents as I waited. She came back and asked if i brought the money and I said yes. She then asked for the affidavit of support of my fiance, along with the W2's, IRS transcript and tax papers and a photo.

I handed them all in and was asked to wait until my name was called. The place got crowded by the second and within 20 minutes it was full of people. There was a meeting due to the new ambassador so they all made us wait till 9-30 before continuing with the interviews. I had to wait 4 long hours before my name was called at around 11-30. This time it was the officer who was going to interview me and not the mean lady from before. She asked me to take an oath from a piece of paper (it has english and bangla) and went on to ask questions. She asked for my name, my fiance's name, the nature of our relationship as she went through the papers. She asked me where my fiance worked and how long I've known her and when we got into the relationship. She tried to get me to say she was my wife but I was warned that they try to do that. She said something like "so how much does your wife visit you?", to which i said "you mean my fiance?". T

Then she asked why I wanted to get married in NY instead of here in Bangladesh. I told her how my father doesn't approve of our relationship and it'd be better if I could move there with her. She looked satisfied with the answer and didn't ask anymore questions on this matter. She went through the papers and the photos for a while then asked some other basic questions like what i do, what my parents do and if my fiance works full time. After around 10-15 minutes of questioning she congratulated me and told me that the visa has been approved. I thanked her and asked her how long it would take, she said it could a week or a month or more, but that it shouldn't take long if she had to take a guess.

Other than the long wait it was a pleasant experience from me since they didn't interrogate me that much. Some other questions that she asked included how often we visit each other, where I study, how many siblings we have and some other similar basic questions. She didn't ask me to name the people in the photographs, she didn't ask for any chat logs either. The only thing I would have done differently is maybe bring some snacks and drinks for the long wait.
