hand-written or typed I-485/I-130 and supporting forms

Hi all,

I was wondering if it would be better to hand-write or type in the immigration forms?

Also, do i use CAPS? or just when i am prompted to do so.

Typed is always better, just because you can be certain that it's legible.

And I only used CAPS when prompted, like on the form I-864 and for some last names on other forms when specified.

Typed is always best but it doesn't matter which way. Remember you need to use black pen to write the form information (signature in blue is best).

Always use capital letters. It's the same as printing when hand-writing a form. It's a more professional way of completing the form. Honestly though it doesn't REALLY matter.

I'd been considering this - typed versus hand-written.

Thank you for your opinions and insight, folks.

I am sure that for those who do not have terribly neat hand-writing, typed text may be easier to read. The last thing I'd want to worry about is being recorded with a typo in my name because the folks processing my papers thought my letter "o" looked like an "a" or something.

I have found, though, that when I save the AOS .pdf forms and load them, I can type in the boxes just fine but am not able to actually save the document with that text. This of course is with just using the free Adobe Reader (or whatever). They do have .pdf editing software out there and that is what I think I'll be using. By contrast, however, I noticed that other .pdf forms I have do actually save text; Passport Canada's Simplified Passport Renewal Form for example.

I believe that the Adobe Acrobat REader 9.3 is the one that allows saved data. I typed and saved mine using it and can still open it without any issues. You might also want to check and ensure that you are downloading the most recent forms from USCIS. The ones that were updated this year are compatible with the new Adobe 9.3 and allows saved documentation.

I'd suggest only putting the last name (married name) of both petitioner and beneficiary in caps on all other forms except the I-864 which requires that everything be typed in caps for that document. All the best
