Review Topic: K1 Visa

Fiancé applied in his country of residence, which is different from his country of origin. According to fiancé, interview was quick and easy. Being a national of a ‘high-fraud’ country didn’t seem to have any bearing on his case. He arrived at the embassy a little ahead of time and showed the interview letter to the officer. The officer had him go to a corner to open the sealed medial envelope in front of him (no sealed envelopes allowed) and he went through airport style security. No electronics allowed, but contrary to what they tell you, there is a space you can store a small cell phone. After going in he waited 5-10 minutes to be called to the counter. The women asked for all of our documentation so he handed her the big packet of everything we prepared. She found and selected what she needed herself and took almost everything except for our proof of relationship. He was then told to wait and he waited 45 minutes or so to be called in for the interview. The interview was only 5-7 minutes and they asked very basic questions like:
- How did you meet? (and had some small talk around this/how long we’ve been together)
- Where does the petitioner live?
- Where do the petitioner’s parents live?
He was not asked to show any more evidence/photos or any questions about the documents we submitted. At the end, he was told he could pick up his visa 8 days later (or he could have requested it to be mailed). The officer ended by wishing him well for his new life in the US.
He was, however, behind someone at the first counter who also seemed to be applying for the K-1. He overhead that apparently this person had some type of criminal record due to youth drunkenness or something along those lines. Seems like this person had a much longer interview (no idea the end result).

Review Topic: K1 Visa

My interview was at 9:30 AM, with the prospect of coming back in the afternoon for the actual interview.

I arrived at the embassy 15min before the interview. There was a line of 30-50 people (It is student visa season). I had some issues to find out where to go, as the inventation states to not wait in line.
I went through the "US Citicen and Immigrant Visa" line and showed my invitation to security. They went inside and came back asking me to open my medical envelope. I did and was let in through security.

Security is its own little building outside the embassy, they take phones, food and other small things and give you a number for pick up. Then you walk out of security and into the embassy building.
At the entrance is a bathroom and a drinking fountain. I went all the way to the back for "Visa" and waited in line with everyone else. When it was my turn I told her I was here for the K1 Visa and she made me sit down while she informed her colleauge.
I was called to go to window number 5 which was behind a door in the hallway. I sat down and gave all my documents to the lady working there.
She took: Passport pictures, birth certificate, police record, I-134 and medical results. I brought my own financial documents as well as a co-sponsers documents with me, but they didn't keep those, as my fiancé makes more than the 100% poverty guideline, I suppose?
She took my fingerprints, made me fill out the blank address in the medical (current and prospect US address), she asked some questions (have you lived in another country since the age of 16, etc.) and I answered.
I also gave her the envelope with the stamps (11CHF) to send back the visa.

Then I had to go back to where I came from and wait for the CO was ready to see me. I had a very friendly lady, I saw her coming up to the window and going through my documents.
She called me up, took my fingerprints again and took the oath.

The questions she asked were straight forward and simple:
- when do you plan to move?
- Where did you meet?
- what year?
- did he live there or was he on vacation?
- how often did you see each other since you first met?
- how do you communicate when you aren't together?
- have you met his family?
- has he met yours?
- do you have wedding plans?
- what does he do in NY?

I answered straight forward and sometimes added a little something, there were a couple more questions about me concerning my legal documents, but all very simple.
At the end she said, congrats it is time to go call your fiancé and tell him you got approved!

I got my original birth certificate and police record back and was over the moon!

The whole process took about an hour, it was very quick and efficient, the CO was really nice and calmed my nerves.
As I jokingly told my fiancé: the hardest part was to find out how I could skip the line as it said in the interview.

Review Topic: EB-5 Visa

Although my visa category is different I hope the review will help others in future.

There was a queue outside the embassy but most of them were for visitor visa. There was a separate line for immigrant visa but no one before us as our interview as at 9.30. Standard security procedure, only difference I found was that they did keep mobile phones in an open shelf and give a token to collect it during exit. No other electronic devices are allowed.

Inside, our originals were collected at the window. Within few minutes we and few other immigrant visa applicants were told to come back in the afternoon for the interview which as a bit surprising. Anyway, in the afternoon, only the immigrant visa holders were present so not many people inside. At our turn standard questions were asked. The computer system was out of order (upgrading to new system) so we were told leave all our originals behind along with passports.

For anyone who has any unmarried child (guess it applies to 18 plus age), please remember to fill two extra forms (selective service and marriageable act). The embassy forgot to ask my son to fill this form and they held our passports until these forms were signed by my son and received by the embassy.

The visa officer told us that we do not need the "famous" sealed envelopes anymore as the new system is now implemented. However, when we received our passports back, we did receive the sealed envelopes. Guess the new system is still not functional.

Overall courteous security and embassy staff.

Review Topic: K1 Visa

I expected it to be way more stressful. Great thing was, there was no other person there but me, so I had no lines or such.
At the first window a lady wanted all the documents I had to bring in, so she reviewed and asked 2-3 questions about it.
Once she finished she explained the next steps of the visa, once I enter the country, how much time it will take at my layover, etc.
Then she sent me to the next window and the officer talked to me about our relationship.
He asked me several questions about how we met, how long ago, when my mother met him the first time, when our wedding will be,
where he works, what his job is, how long he's been with this company, where my typical layovers are, etc.
It wasn't more than 10-15 minutes, and he said they'd send me all documents and visa back next Tuesday.
K1 usually takes 2 days of processing time, not like other visas he said.
Very friendly staff, great experiences, and felt lucky to be there.
