Our experience with the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta seems to be different from others we have talked to.
First of all the interview lasted more than 2 hours. The interviewer kept going over every detail of our initial application, but my fiancee provided answers and explanations for all of his questions.
In the end, approval was left pending.
They requested a Police Certificate of Good Conduct from the Malaysian Consulate because my fiancee attended college in Malaysia. They also requested a Malaysian police certificate from her son, though he had never stayed in Malaysia. They did say she was allowed to submit the documents by mail so my fiancee and son returned to Borneo where they lived.
One week later, the Embassy sent an email stating that they needed fiancee's son to return to Jakarta to "re-fingerprint". This was on the 10th and they required them to return on the 15th. So they had to fly back to Jakarta so her son could "re-fingerprint" on very short notice. Just no regard for people's time. This meant more missed school/work and more money spent on hotels and plane tickets.
Finally, the visa was approved, but not without headache.
The interviewer seemed nervous and fidgety according to my fiancee. Maybe he was new, maybe he was nervous or maybe he felt his job was on the line. We'll never know, but it did seem he gave us the extra business.
I hope everyone else has a smoother experience than us.

I had my interview at US embassy in Jakarta today and I'm so glad everything went well.
I do think it's important to point out that the embassy does not allow anything with a battery inside. I thought I would be able to leave my backpack with a tablet in a locker but the security guard made it clear I had to find a different solution. So if you come, make sure you don't expect to bring anything inside other than your paperwork.
They took my phone at check-in and then I had to go to a separate building where I had to wait for my name to be called, which happened almost immediately.
At this point they scanned my fingerprints, confirmed some of the information and asked for paper copies of the marriage license and my criminal background check. The lady that I spoke to was kind and very helpful. She told me to sit and wait for my turn.
I waited for just over an hour by my calculation (there were no clocks on the walls, and phones are not allowed). While waiting I watched a few "welcome to the USA" videos they had playing on a big tv in the waiting area and I read over the pamphlet that I was given.
Finally they called my name and I had to hold up my right hand and swear to tell the truth. The consular officer asked a few questions about our marriage, when we had met, when we had last seen each other, where we had gone on honeymoon and what I planned to do in terms of work in the US. She also asked to see the pictures I had brought.
After about 10 mins she said "Congratulations, you have been approved"
I left, picked up my phone, checked out and went to get a celebratory lunch. All in all a very good experience but remember to leave your electronics at home

The lady was nerdy friendly. She asked some questions about my relationship and how we maintain the long distance relationship. She also asked me to show some pictures and she approved.
