OP is not a USC (he is LPR)  therefor I think AOS in country is not possible for his wife.  If your lawyer did not warn you about this ... he made a mistake.  And now that your wife has overstayed her tourist visa, I think things will complicate!  Please inform yourself a little bit more about this situation and possible 3 - 10 years ban for overstaying visa.

Actually it’s true. Well one of those half-true stories. Remember the big leap forward?.... that’s what they mean by “make it easier and reduce the backlog” … but what they failed to mention is the Retrogression thing that came afterward. Let´s see what happens this time around. I’m sure something is going to happen, I just hope it’s change for the best … because honestly anything may happened and It could affect waiting times in F1 category in a negative way. There are big rumors of “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” coming next year and we’ll need to see the details of that and understand how it would affect us. It also could be good news!

As an LPR you can stay out of the country for up to 11 months. So in this case if you need to take a couple more months to stay out that should be ok! But I recommend to make it as short as possible. The less time you stay out the better.

You know… having a kid with your husband would definitely help your cause … and in your case you need to get all the help you can.
Here is a possible line of thinking for an IO:
So how come your husband begs you to have a kid and you say no because you´re not ready. It´s not like time is no your side, at least not on your husband´s. If you truly loved your husband you would give him a kid asap… or are you in this just for the immigration benefit?
Please don´t get upset! … this is just practice for you when you face the real IO at the interview
