nickbits got a reaction from aaron2020 in I'm a US citizen. My wife received her greencard. How long do I have to wait to apply for her US passport?
You have to apply for removal of conditions 90 days prior to the 2 year green card's expiration. Then in another year she can apply for naturalization. After she has the naturalization certificate, she can apply for a passport.

The AOS/ROC fees are negligible compared to what your new wife will spend on things that she absolutely has to HAVE.

nickbits got a reaction from Nich-Nick in Green card expiring in 2 weeks
    1) About a week
    2) No idea
    3) Not ideal. You'd have to send the form + payment, then wait for an RFE to mail in the supporting documents.
Why did you wait so long? You could have filed 2 months ago.
If you don't have your documents together now and can't get them sorted out in a day or so, *I* would send in the form + payment and whatever documents I had. At least you'll get an extension letter and be in status that way. Do not mail your supporting documents without the RFE notice or they will likely not be linked to your application.

Nothing but a greencard will help you get into Canada (AP will get you back into the US only). You will need whatever visa your passport country requires. You didn't specify where you are from so I can't help you any further.

nickbits got a reaction from isa30 in How can I build up credit?
I signed up for a Bank of America secure Visa. After a year, I had enough credit history to get a unsecured card.
However, when I tried to get one for my wife she was still denied but she didn't have a job at the time. At that point, I added her as joint owner to my accounts and she now has a credit history.

Don't send anything unless they send you an RFE.

I think things will get better after you move out. Living with inlaws is tough.

Are your US returns "skimpy" because you used the foreign earned income exclusion? If so then I think they'll take that into account. I *think* your Canadian returns have limited, if any, value.

nickbits got a reaction from I AM NOT THAT GUY in * * POLL * * Did you send Original doc to NVC or Certified ?
Most people do not have original documents for anything. Originals are kept by the issuing government body. Certified copies are what most people have for birth/marriage certificates.
I sent a certified copy of the marriage certificate and photo copy of everything else. The certified copy was not returned to me at the interview.

nickbits reacted to Samantha78 in Can we apply for Food stamps?
I also understand that there is and has been a problem with some immigrants taking advantage of government benefits, but in this particular question/situation, it is simply a question - not a plan to mooch off the government. I also wanted to know the answer so that when my immigrant husband arrived, if for some tragic reason I lost my job or we ran into a difficult time financially that was not prepared for, would be at least be able to eat or would we also have to worry about where to get our meals from. Not for nothing but, the economy isn't pretty right now and any of our lives could change tomorrow - what we had, where we worked, what we were accustomed to....gone. There is nothing wrong with knowing or planning in advance. But to make a statement like "san diego" made....if you read it again...it actually made no sense at all in conjunction with this post. The OP wanted to know if the LPR would be able to be included on the application - not apply for food stamps. This is when "san diego" went postal and started with the "immigrants sucking up government benefits" speech. It really served no purpose. And most importantly....the answer is NO. The LPR wouldn't even be able to be added to the application - so it really effects no one, or taxpayers, or the government.
What blows my mind even more is.....everyone on here has an immigrant partner....so to speak about immigrants as though they are second class as in "san diego's" statement.....is disgusting to me.

If you are married within 90 days of entry into the US from a K1, you only file AOS. I do not know the circumstances that would require filing I-130 from a K1.
