Nope--- mine wasn't there! Interview itself is lucky to be 10 minutes!! very basic questions asked--how one met--what are ur employment plans in the USA---what does my spouse do?? very easy! 99% of ones time is spent waiting around!

FireKari got a reaction from TheFantastics09 in Getting license in USA, "direct transfer" - Very helpful tips I learned the hard way
    Hello!
I thought immigration and taxes was frustrating.... I have another to add to the list:
Direct transfer licenses... the kind that you don't have to take the test, just hand them your stuff and they give you the new one.
    Bring with you:
    SSN
    Green card
    Old license
2 pieces of mail with name and address on it
    Cheque, mine was 29.50
    TIPS:
Bring with you http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/053272.html this form [$12, print at home] if you don't want to be held up for an hour and have to go home and come back becuase their system only "sometimes" connects to the Canada data base for them to get your information.... and you don't want to wait two weeks for it to arrive in the snailmail.... UGH
Oh and if you have your ID in two names, bring your marriage cert, they will ask to see it, over and over and over and over again, and still then argue infront of you what name they "think" it should be under, and then put it under your maiden name at the end of the day because that's what your SSN says.
THREE trips, lunch, and a headache later, I have my US license.
    Good grief Charlie Brown.
p.s. Yes you can keep your old Canadian one, they just punch a teeny whole in it, and you have to ask them if you want it back, the guy tried to keep mine until I stated that I wanted it back.
    /end rant
Hopefully others had better experiences than I just did.

In many ways it is precisely because the US and Canada are so similar that it is somewhat problematic to 'adjust'. The differences are often subtle so when you expect something to be the same or similar as it was back home, suddenly you find out it isn't. The differences are enough to unsettle your sense of equilibrium, your sense of self. You are off balance - and it is hard for others who are not in your circumstances to appreciate exactly what you are experiencing. I am very adaptable. I have moved and lived a number of places in my life. I fully anticipated no differences moving to the US and that is also why I am finding myself 'unsettled'. There are differences and they are not all minor. It is a mind-set - an actual approach to life - that is different in the US. I grew up with a Canadian mindset, a Canadian 'identity' and find that I prefer it to the American 'identity'. Part of that is the sense of familiarity with what you know, but part of it is also because the Canadian culture is different than the American culture. We look the same on the surface. We share a border. We share some history. We are major trading partners. No matter how many similarities there are though, Americans do not think like Canadians and Canadians do not think like Americans - and that is what is mainly unbalancing when you try to establish a new life here in the US. We may look like we are the same - but we definitely are not.

Wish I was that lucky. Seems every time I cross into the US Border (Detroit) I get the total interrogation. "Where are you going, who owns this vehicle, where do you live, where do you work, what is your position, what do you have in your vehicle, when will you return, any alcohol or tobacco, how much money do you have with you",..etc..just total hassle crossing. And YES, I have a whole binder with tabs that have records of every time I enter the US. Photo copies of my ID. Bank statements, bills, lease agreement, police clearance, letter from employer, pay stubs..etc. I am always polite, look them in the eyes, never give them anymore than what they ask. Have been denied once because I told them I was going to visit my BF at the time and had some personal items with me, got accused of immigrating and then I was frisked, pic taken, finger prints taken and then for 8 months I had to go to secondary inspection every single time I crossed, and that was at least a 1hr to 1 1/2 hr experience..car searched every time. I'm not a criminal, never had a thing on my record, yet I was always treated like one. BUT that's just my experience, hope everyone else has a better one..:-))

FireKari reacted to KFLUTES in Check List Packet 3
I finally recv'd my packet 3 in the mail from Montreal, however there was NO check list enclosed. Just the letter with the forms i need to fill out online and the required documents but not a check list like everyone on here has stated. Does this mean i dont have to send anything in? or did they forget to send it in my package? how do i find out? With the new system online its hard to know what has changed. Any help would be amazing becuase i dont want to send what i do have if it is missing paperwork and end up delaying things.
WHY IS THIS SOOOOO DIFFICULT!!!! UGGGGH

    SWEET -- That's not fair. =(
Must be then, because either online or on phone they wanted the persons information.
Ontario stuff is all kinds of messed up.
Congrats on the expedite - must be nice not to have to wait like the rest of us.
W8N -- If you want it mailed to the USA I would call them and even ask if they will.
That would be the easiest way to correctly find out.
