  1. Apologise...think I saw a tax thread at some point, now can't find it. Would someone send me the link please?

In the interim - I poe'd Dec. 27th, want to file my Canadian taxes for 2010 in the next couple weeks...can I do it on line as I usually do? Think I read somewhere that once you move you can't, you have to mail it in...

When you have a sec., thanks, B

  2. Hi all - having a brain blip here...was surprised to receive my case transfer notification in the mail without any 'touching' (ha ha, that always makes me laugh, easily amused), other than the initial NOAs and the bio appt.

In any case...I just assumed because I'd signed up for email notification that's how i'd be notified of any activity/that would be considered a 'touch' but now I'm wondering if i should be logging onto the uscis acct we set up when we filed for the K-1 (I tried to but it won't accept our username nor pwd). I did enter my receipt # but it just gave a very generic 'your case is being processed' message.

When you have a sec., thanks, B

  3. Hi all - to my enormous surprise just received a transfer notice today. Truly can't believe our luck - the quick turnaround and the fact that we won't have to go for an interview (my husband travels a lot for work and I was concerned he wouldn't be here).

But something's bugging me...the timing seems odd...odd in that we just filed Feb. 28, seems ridiculously quick, not complaining mind you, just suspicious! Also odd is that our case has not been 'touched' yet (we received the initial NOA1s, email and letter, and biometrics appt.), but that's it, nothing since.

Does this seem right to you?

  4. Hey guys - I just received a transfer notice - my case has been transferred to California! I still can't quite believe it. I'm shaking! I did not expect that at all, so fast, we just filed Feb. 28!

So that means that we don't have to go for an interview right? Just go for my bio appt and wait for them to notify us?

  5. Two good news! 'Lil Chicken is alive and well! He showed up Wednesday night! And second, I received my green card today! Wow, it's so fancy!!! Did you guys notice the picture of all the presidents in the back right under the magnetic band? No wonder the petition costs 1,000!!!

Yayyyyy 'Lil Chicken, yayyyyyy green card! So happy for you!! I was worried about your cat...I'm such a crazy animal lover!

  6. Can't believe I forgot to mention that if you've had a Canadian issued Amex for more than 12 months and are in good standing they'll issue you a US one hassle free - I called and was approved within minutes, card arrived 3 days later. Again, they just refer to your Canadian credit history.

  7. Actually they told me the same thing regarding our preapproval for a mortgage. Although they info can't be used the same way as US based info it shows a history be it good or bad and can help contribute. I was surprised lol.

Well that's good to know...we'll be buying a house in the next couple months so will be sure to mention it, thanks!

  8. So when I was up in Canada last year waiting on the K-1 visa, I rescued a cat and kept it at my parents house. He's an outside cat, but he love it. Always chasing mice and what not. My mom has kept him since I left, kept feeding him and what not, but yesterday she said he had a fight with another cat in the night of Sunday, and hasn't showed up since to eat. I'm SO SAD! :crying: This cat was like this thing my mom could take care of and it would remind her of me, you know? Man, I'm so sad! Maybe he'll show up this week?

Oh, I'm sorry Vero, but don't give up/tell your mum not too - I've had cats all my life. He's probably hiding and will show up eventually - my friend's cat goes missing for days/weeks on end sometimes after a big blow out. Is she leaving food out for him?

  9. Someone may have already shared this info. but thought I'd post in any case.

Just off the phone with Bank of America credit cards - they received my application and had some additional questions for me. As I'm not working/can't work till i get my green card she suggested they pull my Canadian Credit history which would give me a much higher credit limit to start with instead of the typical really low one for immigrants with no job/no US credit history.

Isn't that great? Dunno if it's the same for other US banks, would assume so.

Congrats Brenda2010! Good news! What office are you dealing with?

mandaNchris, I wouldn't waste my time going to the SSN office either! She obviously made a mistake taking your number down! What an idiot! :bonk: Talk about stressing someone out for nothing!

Thank you thank you! I'll be going to beautiful downtown Baltimore! :)

  11. We both wore jeans. Clean ones, clean shoes and nice top.

Today is Vero's interview... she is probably done right now all excited and laughing at herself about how easy it was haha.

Brenda - I have no idea why we had an interview because we were approved before we arrived. I think they just need to have a certain number of interviews.

Yes, you're right, she probably is marvelling at how easy it was! Guess I shouldn't laugh too hard 'cause I'll surely be in the same stressed out boat when it's my turn :)

And yeah, I imagine it is something like them filling their quotas for interviews or some other arbitrary reason we haven't thought of!

  12. Hey guys - just mailed my AOS etc last Monday and today got an email notice from USCIS...that's the NOA1 right? Pretty quick. So next they'll send me a biometrics letter/appt.? And then interview or no interview? Weird how some people get interviews and others not...

  13. Brenda2010, that's exactly what I've been doing too! Maybe we could start a blog and take over Martha Stewart! I do have a lot of tips on how to dissolve stain just with vinegar!!! Maybe we could have a show on the OWN network, haha!

Thanks Tater&####### for the reassurance, I do over-analyse everything, I can't help it, it's an OCD thing... Chris has to count everything he does, so I guess we fit well together!

About the health thing, Rose416 said that it was brought up at her interview, and she explained why she has no coverage right now, and if I remember, her interview guy said that they understand that you can't get everything in a span of 5 months...

I'm in the same situation, if Chris were to put me on his insurance, it would be 400$ a month because I'm unemployed. So if this comes up at our interview, I'll explain that I'm waiting to find work so I can either be put on his insurance or get my own through work.. Makes sense, no?

    Yup, perfect sense!

And there you go again with the similarities- I clean with vinegar all the time...quick, call the network!! :)

  14. Congrats Tater&#######, and thanks for all the good reviews/info.!

Vero, you're cracking me up, we're too peas in a pod...I absolutely can't stand not being in control of things. That's why, while going through all this immigration turmoil and in lieu of working, I've appointed myself Master Chef, Chief Laundry Do-er, and Cleaner Extraordinaire :)

Quick question re: interview...did I read somewhere that we need to bring proof that we have health insurance? If that's the case I'm screwed - Sean's self employed so can't be put on his, insurance agent I went through told me he can't sign me up for anything till I've been in the country for 6 months...is that crazy or what? Obviously I'm not the first person in this situation so can't understand why it's so difficult/why someone doesn't offer this kind of interim insurance.

  15. I am collecting EI. Once your EAD is approved they can start paying you. Mine was approved in Jan and I have STILL been trying to find work. I live in a weird area though. Small town, mostly military so any place that is tailored to my description I cannot do because I am not a citizen :(

EI is pretty easy if you've already called. You call them back once you have the EAD card and fax or scan/email a copy to them with your SNN and they send you the reports in the mail. They ask you to keep record of all the jobs you apply for in case they want to see some.

Thanks for that, nice to know someone else who's doing it. Think I'll start looking before I have the EAD approved, that way there'll be no lapse between approval and payment! At least I hope there won't be, who really knows...

  16. I'm sure you did, I was just making sure because I thought you had done like Ken and Kate and choose not to apply for it, just wanted to double check I guess! Don't worry though, if you know the name of the form, that means you filled it!

Thanks for looking out for me Vero, appreciate it! Think the stress of this process renders me a bit stupid on occassion...ie. yeah, i knew the name of the form/filled it out...boy, I amaze me sometimes (not in a good way!).

  17. Hi everyone! Just wanted to let you know that I mailed off my EAP/AOS this morning, woohoo, soooo happy that's done! And now I wait. Reading your posts keeps me going though, so thank you.

Quick question - I too, will be applying for EI, in fact, applied as soon as I got down here but they've put my file on hold till I'm eligible to work/get my green card. Did that happen to anyone else? Also, did y'all start looking for work prior to receiving you green card? when you received your approval?

When you have a sec., thanks, B
