  1. Hey Folks,

Haven't been here in a while. I was wondering if anyone of you has come across this problem, and what the solution may be.

I have a few CDN stocks and since I'm here in the US now, scotia bank won't keep them for me anymore. Do you kow if there is a brokerage that will keep my CDN stocks as CDN stocks and not convert them to their american equivalent? I have asked questrader, td ameritrade, scottrade, scotia already. They can be canadian or american.

    Please help!!

    thanks

I don't have a few CDN stocks;I have quite bit of them.I've worked on this the same issue for three months once I've moved to USA..I hope u are refering to stocks, not like mutual funds..If so you have ONLY one option which is ETRADE.You open up CDN brokare account with them and they will keep it as is without converting them into USA equilevent.I'm currently in the process of doing this...

i've talked to TD Amerite in person here in CA.It was a terrible experience, they never heard of such thing.I didn't feel comfortable proceeding with them, then moved on to the next one.Scot-trade,chawb trade etc all are popular here...

After talking to each of them ,I've chose ETRADE.They are the only ones who can offer you what you are asking for.All other would convert into USA equvilent...

Which broker are you using it in Canada currently?Scotia-ITrade?

If you need more info,PM me...

  2. I simply called the number that was listed on the form and told them of my situation. They gave me the address for sending back the cheque they sent me (or in your case, likely writing them a cheque).

I did inform them of my change of address long before I moved and they still send out my next refund, so that likely wouldn't have prevented the problem for you, unfortunately.

Anyhow, just give 'em a call and they'll give you the address they'll want it back at. Then it takes a couple of months for them to log it into the system and send you a confirmation in the mail of the return.

    thnx

  3. I've recently got paid by CRA for GST directly to my bank account and I'm already non-resident of CA.I haven't notified CRA regards to the change.

I know I need to return it and I need to know what the process is ..

Hope someone had to do it in the past and can help me with that?

    Thnx in advance.

  4. Okay I am about to bring one of my weirdest paranoias public. I have a fear of the flu shot.

I have reason to believe there is something fishy going on:

    1) Anyone I have spoken to tells me that after they get the shot they get sick. Isn't this supposed to stop the flu?

    2) It's super cheap and made easily available to the very young and very old

    3) You can't take it if you have certain allergies

I don't know who is standing to profit, and why the government is pushing it but to be perfectly honest I just think there is something weird about flu shots. I will one day get to the bottom of it, but for now I pose to you a question: WHY does everyone push it so hard? Who benefits and why/how?

No one in this world does something for nothing. Even those who do it out of the kindness of their heart usually feed on ego or knowing they are helping, which you could say is getting something in return.

    Thoughts?

I got it last year when I was pregnant, but didn't get sick

  5. Can we withdraw our RRSPs or switch it over to Chequing/Savings Accounts without having to pay penalty fees/taxes since I'm a non-resident in Canada, now living/working in the U.S.? Thank you!

I've withdrawn money from my RRSP several times. Each time ,my bank did hold tax on it as per the CRA.

  6. This was all from my accountant and financial advisor....RSP could stay in Canada but my brokerage account had to be transferred to a US broker. So I had to make a deemed disposition of the account and pay taxes on any capital gains. But as I posted above it was such a bad year I had more losses than gains so it came out okay.

I had to report the deemed disposition of my non-RSP account which in effect was selling all my holdings ..on paper only... so I had to report any capital gains but as noted above it came out more on the "loss" side so I was okay. If I had more capital gains than losses I would have had to pay tax on that and no they would not refund me that...my refund was based on the final calculation of my taxes. I usually get a refund due to overpayment of tax from my salary and maxing out my RSP contribution.

    Clear as mud right!

thnx for the clarification.Thats what I have to do next.I'm also transfering my brokerage account to a US firm and I'll see how much tax I'll pay.Would u mind if I ask which brokerage firm did u deal with on both sides?I'm with Scotia-itrade and planning to do go to E-trade....thnx

  7. I'm not aware of any specific departure tax per se. As flames posted you just check off the date of your departure from Canada on your return so they can pro-rate any deductions and/or benefits.

The only "extra" taxes I had to pay was on my investment account that had to be transferred to a US account (on paper at least.) So it was as if I sold everything and then bough it back in the US paying taxes on any gains. Sucks that the market dropped but at least that left me with little gains to pay taxes on. I have already received my refund so I am assuming my accountant filed correctly.

Are you saying that although you've paied some taxes on your investment as if they were sold ,you were able to get the money back from CRA.If so,were you able to get the full amount?Thnx

  8. I will be transfering some money in US dollar from TD Canada to ING Direct USA via custom house and I was wondering If TD canada is going to charge me anything for this transfer.

If you go to the TD Canada and ask for wire transfer they do charge it based on how much you are transfering ,but not sure if u are doing this via custom house..

  9. Another suggestion - There are some banks/credit card companies who approve credit cards for people without credit history.

You can also co-sign her or add her to one of your cards to establish a history.

I'm wondering if there is any difference between the credit history that was established by co-signing of the spouse and the credit history established only under your name?

Is one of them faster than other for establishing the histtory etc?

My hubby had actually added my to one of his credit card last year when I was still in Canada and I've been using it since then. But I still haven't been able to obtain a credit card from anyone since I've moved :-(

  10. I've received a check from my car insurance company in Canada today and went to my bank today and they said the routing # is different so they can't deposit it in...

Was anybody else be able to deposit the CDN check in their USA bank?

    Thnx

  11. Hey again! I have a question, hopefully someone's able to answer.

I'm going to be going back home from August 1st to 31st. I should be around 4 months and some weeks pregnant. I'm flying with American Airlines since it's the only one that does a one stop...I miss Westjet. Anyway, will I need some kind of note from a doctor stating that I'm allowed to fly? I don't want to miss this trip for anything..and I shouldnt be showing by then...so yeah.

Advice please <3 Thank you so much everyone!

You do not want to go tru x-ray at the airport or even tru the security check when you are pergnant. In order to do that, u will need a doc. letter indicating that u are pregnant.I had also flew when I was preg. and showed my letter and asked them that I don't wanna go tru any of those x-rays..They were all fine...

  12. I believe Canada has TFSA(tax free saving accounts) accounts for the last three years or so and I was wondering if they have the same type of account in US banks.I'm not refering to IRA retirement accounts etc...Looking for equvilant of TFSA in USA side.

    Thnx

  13. Wow, I had to have a D&C on Feb 2nd. This is getting spooky!

    Okk.keep going.I've had it in Mount Sinai,Toronto

I didn't know what a D&C was, so I had to look it up. It sounds kind of painful.

  16. We completed our interview on 4/15 and passed and my wife received her passport back with the 6 month temp visa glued inside just a week later. My question is, how long does it typically take to get the 2 year CR green card in the mail? On the DS230 I put down a good friend's name and address for the green card to be mailed and I'm hoping that's not a problem. I did so because I wasn't sure where we'd be living in the coming months as my wife and I are going to moving since my place is too small to accomodate the two of us. I assume they will address the CR1 card to my friend since it was his name and address I listed and hopefully not to my wife since she does not reside there. Does it typically arrive fairly soon after the interview?

The reason I'm curious about all this is that my wife will start applying for jobs once we get to the states and when they ask for her green card, will it be sufficient to just show the temporary one in the meantime? I'm guessing they'll also want to see her social security card as well which even though we checked the box to have one mailed to us, I was told it may be quicker to just go down to the social security office in my city and get her one there. Again though, will they want to see the permanent green card or will the temp one suffice?

    thanks for the help!

    Jason

I entered to USA on Apr 14,2010 and I got my green card today(May 03,2010).I'm also in Calif.

  17. Thanks for all the answers

For those of you who thinks that we can't apply for EI once we move to US,pls read Canada EI pinned threat.Don't miss the opportunity.

I will call the Service Canada and see if I still have chance.

    Thnx trailmix for the info.

  18. I was working as a self-emplyed for the last four years when I was in Canada.Prior to that I was working full-time for a company and I've worked there three years.

I know that we can not collect EI if you are self-employed.But since I used to be a full-time employee prior to being self-emplyed and all EI payments were fully paid during that period, does that make me still eligiable to apply for EI?

I've moved to US two weeks ago.

    Thnx in advance

  19. My hubby and I found out just after I POE'd that we are expecting. We thought that he would be able to add me to his work insurance, but since he was moved to part time, it will only cover him. So I am looking for a company that will cover pre-existing pregnancy. I will need coverage in Tennessee.

as far as I know most companies do not accept a new patient with pregnancy.you will have to do lots of phone calls to find one.

    if u can't find anything,make sure to check www.plannedparenthood.com
