I've never really subscribed to this theory. Yes, getting here legally is time-consuming and expensive, but once here, also affords you the means of going about your daily business without always having to look over your shoulder, and having to deal with the constant threat of discovery/deportation.
Folks that are so desperate to come here that, for example, picking fruit for a pittance represents a better opportunity than anything they have at home (not forgetting the extraordinarily risky business of jumping the border in the first place) have nothing but my sympathy - irrespective of the costly and drawn out way that I got here.
If Uncle Sam wants to keep them out, then he needs to do a better job at the border. Because once they've made it here, then good luck to them - God knows they need it.
Just my "progressive liberal" (LOL @ any non-tea party types being dubbed that) opinion, of course.

"I was locked out of VJ for 24 hours. It was maybe 2 weeks ago. Ryan H I believe his name is. Could not even read why. No access. It now says I can't post unless I acknowledge the warning. Sod that. Done with VJ because there is nothing I would do inappropriate on purpose. How long have I been helping all these struggling people?
    Offended."
So there you have it. Way to go, Ryan.

Damian P reacted to 2ndMessiah in Abused wife please help
Your absolutely right, she does not have to go back to the Philippines to escape abuse.
But as usual we are only hearing one side of the story. It is not uncommon for immigrants from high fraud countries to cry abuse after green-card is in hand. A distasteful but true fact.
If this woman and her children are truly being abused then yes she should leave asap, get all the legal, moral and physiological help possible for her and her children. We assume the only reason she came to the US was to be with her USC spouse and a better life for her and her offspring. That life obviously didn't happen, so we suggested that they return to the Philippines. A place far away from the abuse, back with her family for support. I cannot imagine how i would cope in a foreign country with kids and being abused by the one who was meant to love and support me.

Can always return to the safety of your family in the Philippines, put as much distance as possible between you and the supposed abuser.

My wife died suddenly after only 8 months of marriage. I stayed here. We didn't have kids. I didn't stay for financial reasons (I'm not from a poor country, I'm from the UK like you) but simply because I like it here much more than I do at home. So much so that since arriving here 5 years ago I've not been back once. I don't miss the UK one iota. The US has been my home since I stepped off the plane.
My point being that it's quite wrong to assume everyone has financial or (otherwise sinister) motives for remaining stateside after being bereaved. Irrespective of the economic situation in their homeland. Case in point right here.
