DEDixon got a reaction from AKteacher in Balikbayan Boxes
KY will be a difficult place to send from.
even though i'm in CA, we have only sent one box for christmas. we wanted them to have something to open, something to bring the family together on christmas day. the cost of shipping adds to the cost of the products inside so we just send a little cash for birthdays. my wife sometimes wants to send clothes, however the RP is full of cheap clothes, way cheaper than we can get so i tell her, "what's the point?" i say to her, "if you want them to have clothes, send them some money, it is way easier."
only reason i can think to send a box is when all the stuff inside is free. there might be a few other one-off reasons, but to supply the family with their basic needs, we occasionally send money. sending basic needs in a box just doesn't make sense to me.

it is not at stake as long as she is willing to cooperate later.
she isn't married, she needs to get out of the country on time or else it could affect her in the future. US gov't immigration policy/laws are affecting her and she needs to do what is immediately in her and her child's best interest and then negotiate the long term issues with the father and authorities, if they get involved.
no matter that the story is second hand, we comment based on how it is presented. if they want the best possible answers, it is not in their best interest to post a story that isn't on the mark... if they post a less than honest version of the story, they may as well not post for we would be replying to the wrong situation and what does that do for them?

yeah, most if not all places in the US today, once charged of anything relating to DV, the victim can't do squat to get the perpetrator off. the sheriff of san francisco county (basically city of sf) was recently charged with 3 crimes related to DV and although his wife is speaking out against the courts, district attorney, police, and the judge, he was issued a restraining order not by his wife but by the authorities. he can't see his wife or kid until his trail is over and yes, he was just elected the sheriff.
some of these stories in here are just too unbelievable for me to take serious (this is why i don't often read this forum, but no idea what got into me lately). i mean, if this story is true, are people, both the victim and the per;etrator here this stupid?

There is nothing that you have done or said that would send you to prison. He has nothing to hold over your head in that department. He can say what he likes... right now you have two choices - stay married to him, work on your relationship through counselling etc. and adjust his status normally; or hand him divorce papers and tell him not to let the door hit him on the way out. You're not legally obligated to do ANYTHING for him, and if he hasn't adjusted status yet, there isn't anything he can do about it unless he has real evidence of abuse on your part (which he obviously doesn't.) Even if he did cook something up that he thinks would pass USCIS inspection, it's not your problem any more after you're divorced.
Under NO circumstances, leave your own home - he's the one who's got to go. If you left and he filed a restraining order against you, things could get very messy for you.

This is one Republican that will vote for Obama in 2012 if the Republicans can't agree to tax the rich. Surely there is a spending problem, however we need compromise on both sides and this Republican sees the Republicans are stubborn rich favoring idiots so what do Republicans need to worry about? How many other Republicans and Independents are thinking as I am? How many other Republicans and Independents feel Obama is bending far more than Republicans.
In the past, if I disagreed with Republicans I simply sit out an election, but this time I will vote my disgust by voting for Obama. It doesn't even matter that I do not live in a swing State, because as I said, how many others think the Republicans are siding with the rich at the expense of our debt and deficit?
Perception is what the Republicans need to worry about.

if the droughts they talk about were real, every lawn in CA including those in northern CA would be like the ones in AZ.. full of rocks.
sorry, but "drought" has a different meaning in CA than in any other part of the world.
it just doesn't make sense to talk about drought while the lawn sprinklers are on it the background.

More from the scary terrorist, Tariq Ramadan:

[Ramadan] called on Muslim immigrants to Canada and other Western countries to stop acting like misunderstood "victims" and get on with "contributing" to Western society.
    ...
A champion of women’s rights, Ramadan believes moderate Moslems around the world, including among Canada’s 700,000 Muslims, need to show the world that Islam promotes equality, shuns hierarchy (since it has no single leader, like a Catholic pope) and is essentially a "democratic" religion.
One of Ramadan’s key messages is that the Muslim holy book, the Koran, is open to interpretation.
Like liberal Christians and Jews, he wants to see faithful Muslims transform their spiritual practices based on where they find themselves in the world.
For instance, instead of importing clergy from developing Muslim-majority countries, Ramadan wisely supports educating European Muslim imams in Europe, and Canadian imams in Canada.
"We shouldn’t just duplicate Pakistan," he said.
    ...
Ramadan ... currently teaches in the theology department at Oxford University.

But shouldn't Allah be watching over us? Why do these horrible events happen if He is all-powerful and all-kind?
We can point to religious wars that, when the number of deaths are added up, are 10X greater than your examples...
And, being religious, you can't point to your examples because it is making a mockery of your religion because God is supposed to be all-powerful and all-kind / loving...How can He be Commander and Chief while millions of people are slaughtered? And on top of that, send over half of the innocent victims of war to HELL FOR ETERNITY???!!!

i'm not saying teaching is easy. i don't think it is easy. i had a GF once who was a teacher and if you care, creating lesson plans and keeping up with new teaching methods isn't easy. schools are always buying into new teaching methods too and constant changes from administrators is a pain in the a##. students aren't doing well, from the top, it as constant let's try this, ooops that didn't work, now let's try this, ooops that didn't work. from what i remember (that GF was many years ago), school districts actually have to buy the rights to use new teaching methods.
some parents can really raise a stink causing the teacher, principal, vice principal, district lawyers along with the parent(s) and the parent's lawyers all to officially meet to state their case. the list of people i mentioned, i know isn't complete, it is easy for many more to be involved (a variety of specialist are often included).
for the record, i'm not blaming teachers for anything. i place ALL of the blame on parents and our society as a whole. when both parents work there is a price to pay. our society places a lot of stress on parents and kids in many ways.
i simply think there should be a much better review process to weed out bad teachers. as it is now, there may as well not be a review process at all so that means there is a lot of room to improve the current system. i have been referring to districts in the BAY AREA, however teacher's unions all over the US, as part of basic policy for their members, are against changing the current review process. there are reasons they resist change, however i still think change is long overdue.

prop 13 has nothing to do with CA's budget issues - absolutely nothing. libs says without it the state would have more revenue, but guess what, the libs would only spend is all just like the revenue they have now.
let's say no prop 13 existed tomorrow, CA raises property taxes, brings in a lot of cash, CA is cash rich for about a decade then the pols start making those rosy property tax revenue projections and spending based on them and CA is right were it started.
bottom line is prop 13 does exist so there is X amount to spend, X is what should be spent, not X plus.

like i always say about this happy country BS, it is always countries that have nothing to do with leading the world. they have no responsibility except to themselves basically. there isn't any articles in their newspapers about what they are not doing to solve any of the world's problems. the articles are about what the USA is going to do to make the world different.
i think there is a certain level of stress on americans that the people of these small countries do not feel. articles in their newspapers are always about what the US aren't doing enough of, what we are doing too much of, and surely never an article of thanks to the USA for anything.
hillary clinton recently said that as SoS what first amazed her was the phone calls that she would get from leaders of small countries asking her to step in to solve issues that were basically child's play. i wonder how many calls denmark or finland's SoS receives compared to clinton?
sometimes i wish i was from the likes of denmark or finland. the feeling most be pretty good, you are from a relatively prosperous country, the world isn't looking to your country to solve any problem the world is faced with. these countries just wait for solutions provided by the US and other world leading countries. it has to better (mentally) just waiting for others to handle the whole world while these small happy countries simply concern themselves with internal matters.
so from my point of view, they can take their happy country status and stick it up their a##.

clinton didn't even have the russians to worry about, Reagan and Bush One took care of them.
then comes along a brand new industry that like Wilson said brought in billions in completely unexpected capital gains and huge salaries (income tax). it isn't like clinton planned the internet and all that spawned from it. he was just there for the ride.
heck, times were so easy at the time, clinton had time to get his secretary to organize blow jobs for him.
there were some international things for clinton to deal with, but nothing, absolutely nothing on the scale that Bush Two had to deal with. And how amazing is it that Obama campaigns on change, however for the most part all things international remain the same.... N. Korea, Iran... no remarkable change.
clinton left office just in time and even he knows that.
hell, if pee wee herman were president at the time, a surplus would have existed.
with all that said, i do not dislike clinton. I think he is one of the smarter presidents we have had, however he was very very very lucky in office (after those first 2 miserable years.... before the internet industry started to fill the gov'ts piggybanks).
i honestly feel sorry for Obama. He really got a mess handed to him, but it wasn't a mess anyone can contribute to Bush alone. i never once heard a dem sound any alarm over home prices, easy mortgages, or anything else we now know contributed to the financial crisis.

The same Republican-Democrat Regime party. If you want to talk about honesty,
then be honest about the dot-com bubble which brought in hundreds of billions
in unanticipated tax revenue from taxes on capital gains and rising salaries.
Be honest about the crash and recession that followed and something called 9/11
that Clinton's successor had to deal with.

something for you to think about: name calling and personal insults are the last resort of limited intelligence.
