  1. FYI Thai Air Asia doesn't accept U.S. based credit cards. 2 hours on the phone with them. What a pain in the a$$. Nok Air takes them though. They only take SCB, Bankgok Bank and one other one. Wife is on the motorbike going to the airport in Chiang Mai to pay for her ticket.

Still the stone ages over there on some levels.

  2. My wife is from Surin, she WAS a Thaksin supporter. While she was here in the states, she was able to get unfiltered news about him and realized what a ####### he was/is.

He is a #######. That is putting it nicely.

When they had the coup in '06 I was really happy. They shut off CNN and BBC for a day or 2, but not the internet, so kinda pointless. Unfortunately, "man with 2 wives" Sonthi decided that no more living in Thailand on 30 day tourist visas. So I had to get married.

I ended up with one year a Non-O multi entry which at the end of the day was better.

  3. LOL. Yes your results may vary  But that's what this thread is for.

On a separate note I now have a list of things that may ease the transition for your loved one when he/she arrives here:

    1) Rice Cooker - this is a must. I bought one at Sears for $30 that is working great so far (Mekong Plaza, my closest Asian Grocery Store, wanted $100+).

    DONE

    2) "Thai Keyboard Stickers with White Lettering on Transparent Background" found on Amazon.com for $5.77 with shipping sold by 4KEYBOARD. This will turn any standard computer keyboard into a Thai keyboard

    DONE

    3) Download the free Thai language pack for Windows XP/Vista (this allows you to switch between Roman and Thai language on the computer by clicking on an arrow on the far right side of your Start Bar in Windows). Unfortunately, if you have Windows 7 you have to upgrade to Windows Ultimate in order to download/install any language packs.

I set this up in XP with a hotkey sequence. ALT-LEFT-SHIFT switches between Thai and English.

    4) Thai Satellite for Thai News/Soap Operas (I mentioned the specifics in an earlier thread and there are alternatives to a satellite dish).

She doesn't want it. I guess reading Thairath on the internet is good enough for her.

    5) "Bidet BB-50: Hand-held bidet with room temperature water and adjustable pressure" offered from Amazon for $45.50 with shipping. This is the popular "Bum Gun" found everywhere in Thailand. It comes with all the necessary hardware to go between the water hookup and your toilet's tank and mounts on the wall. This one has held up well so far for me.

Haven't asked her about this. Probably wont.

    6) Some kind of clothes drying rack or setup some clothes lines. Mimi is not a fan of clothes drying machines (I don't think they're popular in Thailand but someone can correct me if I'm wrong). My socks and underwear are OK in the dryer but for the more delicate stuff she prefers the old fashioned method.

Same here on that one. Also, I showed her the dishwasher, and she said, "what do you think you're hiso?" So that thing hasn't been used in almost 2 years. Some times she uses it as a dish drying rack. Every so often I have to turn it on to drain the water.

I'm sure there is something I'm forgetting but I think that covers the important stuff. Obviously you don't HAVE to buy this stuff but I think it will make for a much easier transition for your significant other.

  4. Look's like my wife's sister is really sick and may not make it. Apparently she has pnuemonia pretty bad. Also I came to find out out something nice. Her sister talked her mom into taking a loan out on the family farm, and gave the title to this lady. The father knows nothing about it. Never stops in Thailand. Nok is going over to see her sister Tuesday and try to straighten this mess out.

On a positive note, I was able to buy a ticket on Korean Air today for $1370. Pretty good price on short notice. Also, they will let you change the return date with no penalty. I wish American based airlines would do that. I came back from Newark a couple weeks ago, and wanted to leave a couple hours earlier. Bastards charged me $50 for that.

  5. Hello all,

I am starting the process of collecting the necessary documents to file with the NVC, namely:

    1. Original/Certified birth certificate of the beneficiary

    2. Original/Certified marriage certificate of the beneficiary and the petitioner

    3. Original police certificate(s) of the beneficiary

According to the 'LingChe NVC ShortCut' guide it is not necessary to translate documents, "Translations - All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations."

All of my wife's documents are in Thai language. I would like some reassurance that translation is not necessary for Thailand.

    Thank you for your time.

I am almost positive you will need everything translated to English because you will be submitting those documents to NVC, not the embassy in Bangkok. I think the LingChe shortcut is wrong about that.

  6. John McCain served his country honorably and with great courage. He has done so in uniform, as a POW under unimaginable conditions, and as a Senator from Arizona.

Today, Nov 11, Veterans Day, I think is a particularly suitable day to reflect on that.

I don't agree with all of his political positions, I probably disagree with him far more than agree. But I respect him and his service.

  7. For marrying a Thai person, I heard in another thread about K-1 being easier. What is the easiest method? Also, I'm a girl, and he is the one who lives in Thailand. We are both still college students.

K-1 is quicker, but when you get here you'll have to spend another $1010 to adjust status. Also, while waiting for adjustment of status the Thai person will not be able to work etc.

  8. Once consideration specific to Thailand is that the K1 applicants tend to be subjected to far less scrutiny at interview than the immigrant spouse visa applicant. If you have plenty of relationship evidence and the applicant is well prepared for the interview, scrutiny is overcome. Either way, I generally advise couples to make their life and relationship decisions (including where and when to marry) based on their own considerations, then follow the immigration path that matches their life decisions.

100% agree. Not sure why that is.

  9. Dreaming of what? When was the last time Texan cities were recognized for anything pertaining to actual Q.O.L, when compared to other international cities? You also still fail to grasp the concept of supply and demand, regarding the value of property. Much for the same reason coal is cheap versus platinum. There is a reason that seldom will you find professionals located in the first world choosing Texas for migration, versus NYC, Boston, Chicago, LA, Seattle and DC. Not trying to hate here either, just being a realist.

The majority of companies I hate are based out of Texas. E.G AT&T, AA, the oil companies, Dell etc etc.

A great business climate and no state income tax. Texas (Dallas and Houston in particular) don't have the benefits of somewhere say like New York (good public transport etc.) on the flip side there is no income tax here. The sales tax is fairly high (7.25% or in my case 8.25% thanks to the yellow buses I an most other people here rarely ride.

If you want to hate companies, look at AIG, Investment banks, brokerage houses etc. I'm pretty sure they are all based in NY. AT&T used to be based in NJ, now based in Dallas. Verizon is still based in NJ (Basking Ridge), but they have a very large presence based in the DFW area. Don't be surprised if VZ moves their HQ here after Seidenberg retires.

Housing is very cheap here, and the quality is the same if not better.

  10. I don't know. Generally speaking, people's religiosity is so integral to who they are, who knows what would happen if you took religion out of the equation entirely.

I think bad people would remain bad if you took religion away. I think religion is the only thing keeping some people good, so I wouldn't want to take it away from them. Therefore, I see the net effect of religion as a positive.

Yeah if the fear of going to hell stops someone from sticking a gun in my ribs and taking my wallet, it is probably a good thing.

  11. I don't care for her a lot personally...but I guess you have to defend your fellow party member sometimes in the case of Guiliani. And yes, I guess it's part of wanting to fit into a mainstream Republican view. Although, if 2 out of 3 in the country do not think Palin should be president, are the 1/3 mainstream Republicans? I don't know.

The fact is, Obama did not have more experience or qualifications in my opinion either. He just talks better and had ideas that more people liked. That doesn't mean he was very experienced.

I 100% agree with this. Obama never ran anything. He was in the Senate for 2 years and then started running for president. He gives a good speech.

Alot of people say he went to Harvard etc. Didn't Bush go there?

  12. Hi,

I'm currently in the U.S. on a K3 visa. We have already adjusted status, and everything has gone smoothly.

A few days ago, we received a letter in the foreign country titled "Notice of termination of registration". This letter indicated that our immigrant visa has been canceled.

Is this something we should be worried about? I think this is for the I-130 immigrant visa, but I've been living here in the U.S. for almost two years now (came over on a non-immigrant visa), and have a green card.

    Thanks.

    mera

Not quite sure what that means. If you've already adjusted status I wouldn't worry about it.

  13. Per your info I decided to look through the manuals on both my cable box and satellite receiver. I found a hidden menu on my cable box that allowed me to turn on english subtitles - thanks! Unfortunately, the digital receiver only has "teletext" (British version of CC), but when I try it on the Thai channels it just says "No Teletext". Thanks,

    Mike

Waste of time. I know yellow shirts here in Dallas that only watch Thai TV. Don't go down that road. She'll never learn the language that way. Up to you, but I love Lucy and sh$it like that is your best friend. I look at Thai streaming videos, she just laughs. She deosnt care.

    Look here:
