  1. It was volunteered. I was called up, the address confirmed, and the officer started telling me how to go about getting a social security number. I was confused and wasn't sure what to say after I told them what I had checked on the form and the officer told me to go anyway. Sounds like I should just book the appointment to go and grab it though, or at least discuss it with the SSA, so I'll do that today. Thank you everyone for your advice! I appreciate it
  2. Hi friends. I crossed into the US yesterday and all went well, but the border officer made a suggestion that has me confused. When we filed for my IR1, we selected the option to have the SSN mailed to me. However, the officer told me I needed to go in person to an office and get the card myself. I told him we had selected the option to have it mailed and he told me to go anyway to avoid delays. I don't mind going, but I don't want it to cause any trouble if I do need to wait (can these things be double issued?). Has this happened to anyone else? Should I go and get the SSN from the office or will that cause trouble since I selected to mail it?
  3. Ah, lovely! Thanks so much. I might take a leaf out of your book @Daphne K and start sending out a few CVs before I leave in a few days. What a clever idea! Hopefully the social security number doesn't take too long to arrive in the event they withhold pay without it. Eep! 😬
  4. Hi friends! Quick question here, as I'm finding conflicting information online. I'm moving permanently to the US on my IR-1 visa, and naturally I'll be looking for work. I know that we elected to have my social security card mailed to me, but do I need to wait for this to arrive? Some websites say to wait as I'll need the number to apply for work, while others say that the visa in my passport is fine temporarily until the card arrives. For those who moved to the US on the IR-1, did you look for work right away? Were you able to? Or is the SSN required before I can begin applying? Thanks in advance.
  5. Hi all, my passport with visa inside was returned to me today (issued September 9th, 2021) and we are over the moon! I never received my "Welcome to America" letter at the end of my interview, but this letter was included alongside my passport. So if you didn't receive one at your interview but you were approved, it's likely coming in the mail with your passport! We are planning to make the final move in January, after I recover from surgery for cancer. Thank you so much to this forum for the advice and morale over these last months. ❤ VJ family is invaluable!
  6. Hi all, I will offer a review and more detailed write up once I am home in the next two days but I'm happy to report that my visa was approved today! Wife and I are over the moon to be reunited soon. I'm glad to see others approved today as well! 😊
  7. Just wanted to chime in and say I received the police clearance in record time I feel like! I had my prints done at Commissionaire's on August 20th and received the clearance yesterday. Super pleased since I was worried I was cutting everything close.
  8. Had the medical with Dr Mascarenhas today and it went very quickly. Super friendly and office staff was very efficient. Between the wait time, x-ray, and blood work it only took a little under an hour so I was very pleased. It was my last step to complete before my interview next week. I'm a bundle of nerves! Hoping to have my police clearance back in time for the 3rd... crossing fingers!
  9. No problem! She's basically taken care of everything and done a fantastic job with it. This is the first time we've had a question and she didn't know the answer so it's great to have the VJ community here for moments like this! I'm glad that I was able to share this trick for other folks to benefit from too!
  10. 100% did not submit the police clearance beforehand. We were approved without submitting. See attached screenie! Our lawyer was alternating between calling it a security and police clearance so I think that's why I was alternating between the two. I was clear on bringing the document, what I wasn't sure about was the actual fingerprints themselves (ink or digital). Twiz cleared up that it is in fact digital though so I'm all good to go that way.
  11. Oh good! I did book in for digital, haha, good to know that will be the right one! Thank you!
  12. Positive. Our civil documents list was the following: -Passport page -Photographs -Marriage certificate -Police clearance (Canada) -Birth certificate We uploaded everything except the police clearance, were DQ'd, and now I have to grab the police clearance. Our lawyer only gave us that website for steps but it wasn't specific about ink vs digital. I plan to bring my interview letter with me tomorrow to the appointment so hopefully Commissionaire's knows which is required because I sure don't. 😬
  13. We DQ'd without doing the security clearance. We noted this would be provided when we went to the interview, so that's what we're trying to do now. We did ask the lawyer and even she was unsure whether digital or ink was required - only that it had to be done for the RCMP certified police clearance. I ended up booking at Commissionaire's for the digital and when I get there I'll be showing them my letter and telling them truthfully it may need to be ink, I have no idea lol. The website our lawyer gave us for the specific check was this: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/steps-getting-a-certified-criminal-record-check but it doesn't specify whether digital or ink is required within Canada. Ink for without, but nothing specific for within.
  14. Hi friends, does anyone know what kind of fingerprints need to be done for the security clearance? Our lawyer simply stated fingerprints, but Commissionaire's has both digital and ink listed. Which am I supposed to book for in order to get the clearance done? 😬
  15. Beyond overjoyed to receive our letter today for September 3rd (DQ Oct 7th). Updating timeline accordingly. Congratulations to everyone who received and for those who didn't, we are here for you! ❤️ It's tough but you will get there!
