Best wishes for a speedy recovery. No other person ever in my life like my mom. I am not a real spiritual, praying kind either but I said one for you and your mom.

I haven't really wanted to talk about this, but we could do with some well wishes and prayers too if you're the praying type. (We aren't, but I also believe in the power of people who do.)

My mother-in-law has been quite ill with COVID. She says she is getting better but honestly, it feels very stalled, like one and a half steps forward and then a step back. Yes, she was fully vaccinated and yes, this is a breakthrough case. No one thinks she is going to hospital but it's been nearly a week since she got her first positive result on a lateral flow test; the diagnosis was confirmed over the weekend. Her live-in long-term boyfriend did not catch COVID, and he's taking care of her, but he needs to keep his distance as well. I don't really want to get into too many more details but that's the general gist of things.

Guys, this is really, really hard. We are so far away, and we can't do anything more but love her. Her GP is optimistic it's just a matter of rest and pain relief and she seems in quite good spirits in spite of it all. I know it will all be fine, she's otherwise healthy and not very old (56) but the virus seemed to hit her in such a way that she resonated in the dissonant chord of severe illness where others might not. It's all so random -- her sister, my husband's aunt, also got COVID at the same time but in another part of the country and she's had barely a snuffle or a cough, just feeling a bit off. She's also fully vaxxed, as is her partner who also caught it -- and is also just fine.

Please hold our family in your hearts. We know all will be well eventually but it's still a difficult time for us, especially my husband. I don't want to be a sap and say "good vibez only" but you know... good vibez only right now? ❤️

I find it interesting from an observational point of view, thankfully not something I have had to deal with.

There are consequences, things that seem to be ignored but are definitely there. We all know most women when looking for a partner generally do not want to marry down, an interesting term. I have seen this happen to a friend, he has a good job but no degree so that seems to have knocked him out of most ladies consideration.

So if we are going to have equality it needs to work both ways, the way things seem to be going just does not add up.

My local Doctor is a lady, and that seems to be a much more female dominated industry. Now using this area for example to get the same number of years Doctoring you need more qualified women that you do men, obviously it is possible to ramp up the numbers but wonder if it has been factored in.

I grew up at a time when many thought you had to be a woman to be Prime Minister, always had a Queen not a King so perhaps a different perspective.

Anyway the pay gap is predominantly a myth, is there something at the margin, most likely, but I can see it goes both ways. Female Models for example seems to be paid more than Males but that does not seem an issue.

I am more intrigued as to the societal effects, I know if I was 20 again I would be looking at things very differently.

Leaving things on a positive note it can only be good news for VJ.

I have to, sort of, disagree.  I don't think anybody could easily be a CEO.  Kind of like what Peterson says about becoming a CEO, "why would anybody want to do that?"  You have to be a really obsessive type of individual to work your way up to becoming CEO.  You have to sacrifice so many other aspects of life, including family, in order to achieve that.  Women are just as capable as men of achieving this, but it definitely won't be easy.  But it isn't easy for men either.

There are also people who don't "follow the leaders" that still come out with the same conclusions that "the leaders" come to. Thinking contrary to mainstream thought doesn't mean you're right, it just means you're thinking contrary. You could be right, or not. There no nobility that automatically attaches to not agreeing with settled conclusions.

That summed it up eloquently.  Sometimes I agree with our  leaders and news outlets,  Sometimes I don't, but I don't google feverishly until I find some fringe website to agree with me. There are websites out there that support most any theory out there. When you have blinders on you never see what is around you.
I mostly agreed with Trump, but the times I did not the reaction was over the top. When I showed concern here over his mental state, for suggesting we investigate  the injection of disinfectant I was roasted.  Funny thing those so called free thinkers are in a cult and don't know it.

Here is my problem with Peterson.
Resentment: either you are emotionally stunted ( and mostly focused on young men), get your stuff together, no argument there OR
You are feeling resentment because you are being subject to some injustice. and you need reassert yourself and reclaim what is yours, for your good and that of society and restore "the natural order".

That is all well in good. But what if there is a third option: social constructs are invented and not natural.  Example from the 60s: Dad goes off to work, mom stays home and takes care of the kids and the meals and the...you get the picture. One day Mom has an epiphany: the kids are in school all day, what if I took a job on the side. had my own bank account, had my own car? There would be more not less for everyone including me.
So Dad doesn't like it, but he goes along  figuring she will tire of this experiment.
Turns out: she thrives at work and loves it. She is finally putting that degree to work. We'll save the equal pay for equal work discussion for later, she is happy.

Naturally, things change at home. There is no June Cleaver with a cold martini waiting for Dad. Dinner is not from scratch but comes out of a freezer. The clothes aren't as pressed and lined up. He needs to take care of more things in the house and with the kids. "This is unfair, I never had to do any of those things before"  Dad wants this to stop and to return to the "natural order".  But the natural order is a myth, a construct invented for that society at that time.

When a group people with the power have a set of rules that works for them, and the other party no longer wants to play by those rules, conflict ensues and inevitably the party that perceives they are loosing power think it is unjust. They invent all sorts of excuses about why things need to be restored, explain on behalf of the other party to "the deal" why that group is not interested in a seat at the table, a piece of the pie,  a vote, a living wage, good schools, clean water.  "Why should", the folks with power rationalize, " I give up my seat, my power, my money" for the other.  "They were perfectly happy before. Why can't these activists/intellectuals/carpetbaggers just go home and quit riling folks up"

The thing is, those feelings of resentment are rarely backed up by evidence and a whole industry of rewriting history is spun up to keep the status quo and ensure those with the power, feel comfortable keeping it. For my money Peterson is an extension of that industry.

When you try to tell me " the only way you can reasonably argue" , you meant "the only way I can reasonably argue"

I don't need you to tell me what I think , I need to understand why you believe women collectively as a group are not interested in leadership roles.  I suppose you would say women are earning 82cents on the dollar for the same work because they have "no interest" but I should let you say it in your own words..

She is a public figure and criticism,  accurate or not, is fair play.  But imagine if you will, if Kamala said all of these things in public:

"If Donald Trump can't satisfy his wife, what makes him think he can satisfy America?"

"If he were a woman, I don't think he'd get five percent of the vote."

     "Such a nasty man"

"He's a crazed, crying lowlife" and a "dog."

""All of the men at work
flirted with me — consciously or unconsciously. That's to be expected."

"“Do you believe in punishment for abortion – yes or no – as a principle?”
“The answer is there has to be some form of punishment.”
    “For the men?”
“Yeah, there has to be some form.”"

and yet these quotes received little criticism from Trump fans and Republicans, even Republicans who are appalled are silent.

The point is to succeed, women need to be twice as smart but not make men feel threatened,  twice as kind and tolerant but twice as tough and hard nosed, work twice as hard, but stay home and raise children, take no prisoners but defer to the real leaders in the room (the men). Any deviation  from this impossible model will shake many men and some women to their core.  Some in our society are just not ready for a woman leader.

I just outline a storyline that we would never be able to sell to Hollywood B film producer, and your response is "it is certainly plausible"  You certainly did not address any of the absurd prepositions ( except you think Fauci is some sort of greedy evil mastermind)

Now you have goal shifted to local government actions, which is not the WHO, the Whitehouse , the CDC or the FDA.  It is possible that local governments and agencies get it wrong some of the time based on the 'fog of war"?  Not just possible, it's likely.  But that doesn't mean they are wrong all of the time or that they are malicious in their intent.  It also doesn't mean if you went back in time that the same people wouldn't make the same decisions

The mask thing cracks me up, is it really the affront to ones personal liberty to wear a mask to protect one another?  The probability that masking saves lives is very high, moresoe with Delta an Omicron in the environment..  Why don't we just do away with any public decency laws while we are at it.  Topless Tuesdays at work anyone?  < its a joke Nature Boy, not a thing.

so, are you saying the tests don't work or that you are unconcerned about a visitor bringing the virus?

The other possibility is that you and about a third of the population get your information from a news source that is less than reliable on this topic.

So what you are saying is that to support the profit of a handful of drug companies. The CDC, the FDA, the regional heath authorities, the Trump administration, the Biden admistration, numerous research and university organizations, the drug companies, the WHO, all of their counterparts in every other nation, countless doctors and researchers

    all got together and said:

" here's a plan, let's advise the schools and industry to shut down their operations and convince people to shut themselves off from everyone they know and love in the world, tank the economy, drive countless businesses into ruin, disrupt the medical industries own flow of work and revenue because we need to pretend that it's too risky to do those things. We will shut down every facet of people's lives and cause them to cower in fear, force them to line up for a useless and dangerous "untested" vaccine. Oh yeah and when we get the vaccine,  only bother to approve one and then don't even let the public have the approved one.

    even though
we (all the conspirators in the first paragraph) know the virus is not that dangerous.

And they are doing this for what? 100 billion in revenue? Some sort of power trip?

Or is this closer to the truth?

This virus caught us off guard even though experts warned of this scenario, hardly any part of our medical infrastructure was ready for this lethal of a virus. We  rushed through a series of vaccines and made every effort to ensure the safety for emergency use authorization and continue to monitor for risky outcomes until we can achieve FDA approval and be assured that the vaccine meets the same safety standard as thousands of other drugs with FDA approval.

    Which scenario is more plausible?

Edit: I forgot to put the mask part in, if we cam get folks to wear a mask everywhere, that would be a hoot!

No, that's not what I'm saying at all about the mainstream media, please don't put words in my mouth. Whether or not a story is reported by the mainstream media isn't indicative that it is or isn't automatically trustworthy. We all have our prejudices for and against as individuals for believing whether a story is likely or not to be true depending on where it is reported, but that isn't really dispositive in the end. The facts are the facts, whether they are in the New York Times or Gateway Pundit or on Andy Ngo's Twitter. Slant is separate and apart from the actual facts.

It isn't overcompensating to call yourself a fact checker if you are in fact a fact checker. Whether or not you believe in the outcome is separate and apart from what the function of the outlet is.
