President Donald Trump faced a social media backlash after an off-color joke suggesting the late Democratic Congressman John Dingell was in Hell.

Dingell, a WWII veteran who represented Michigan from 1955 to 2015, died in February aged 92. His wife Debbie Dingell fought and won his seat and now sits in Congress.

Trump talked about an emotional call from Dingell to say thank you after he gave her husband what he described as "A plus" treatment upon his death, including the lowering of flags and offering the use of the Capitol Rotunda.
"She calls me up. 'It's the nicest thing that's ever happened. Thank you so much. John would be so thrilled. He's looking down, he'd be so thrilled. Thank you so much sir.' I said that's OK, don't worry about it," Trump said, relaying the call.
"Maybe he's looking up, I don't know. Maybe. Maybe. But let's assume he's looking down."

Yeah, the BIG difference between Bill Clinton and Donald Trump is Trump's honesty. Good lord you guy's. Get out of the echo chamber once in a while.

Not that it will be considered as anything more than the "outrage" that I have been "gaslighted" into, but I found this foul and despicable. We are all better than this -- we don't slam recently bereaved people and mock their dead loved ones. I am not a believer, but I learned when I was a child -- as I expect you all did as well -- that we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us. I do not wish death or harm on the president, or any person whom I find offensive or despicable. I would not mock their family over their deaths. It's beyond tacky -- which of course it is -- it is a mark of a person who cannot respect humanity in others. We are all humans, and even if we do not respect others, we should respect the things that make us like each other. There are plenty of people, in politics and other areas, whom I do not respect. But I respect that they have feelings, experience love and grief and joy and loss, just like I do. I would not have others rip me apart when I am already suffering, so I would not do that to anyone else.

A person should never punch down. It's pure cowardice.

No giving respect to others is what an adult does regardless. Leading by example is what a leader does. This is a poor example.

It seems like this country has lost its ability to distinguish between personal attacks and partisan politics.

What outrage? It is just in poor taste  on the anniversary of the man's death. We have no pretense of changing the man, but we don't have too look at certain behaviors and say, "yes, this is someone we can aspire to be"

I am very rarely swayed by anything in the media. when I saw the headline, I read his actual quote before I formed an opinion. I just think there are some things decent humans don't do and implying someones dead husband could possibly be in hell for political gain is not one of them. I guess that is why I have the famous reputation for being the middle of the road guy. My opinions are not based on party affiliation.

Politics has become much like college football. Let a Gator get arrested, and its because they are all vial thug criminals. Let a bulldog get arrested, and the poor kid was singled out by overzealous po po.

To me it's along the same lines as attacking the children of President's it was wrong when they did it to Bush, It was wrong when they did it to Obama. Now when the become of age and enter the political game, fair game. Chelsea is now fair game as are the Trump kids

    By Devan Cole, CNN

Updated 11:36 AM ET, Tue December 17, 20
Washington (CNN)Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Monday weighed in on President Donald Trump's assertion that the impeachment proceedings against him should stop, saying he "is not a lawyer."
The remarks from the 86-year-old justice came at an event in New York where she was awarded the Berggruen Institute Prize for Philosophy and Culture. She plans to donate the $1 million prize to a number of organizations that promote opportunities for women.   The House is expected to pass two articles of impeachment against Trump on Wednesday, charging him with abuse of power for withholding nearly $400 million in US military aid and a White House meeting while pressuring Ukraine's president to investigate a potential political rival, and obstruction of Congress by thwarting the House's investigative efforts.   During the event where she was interviewed by the BBC, Ginsburg also said she hopes there will be "good people on both sides of the aisle to say let's stop this dysfunction" and "work together for the good of the country," though it's not clear whether she was talking about the ongoing impeachment proceedings. https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/17/politics/ruth-bader-ginsburg-donald-trump-lawyer-trnd/index.html

90DayFinancier reacted to elmcitymaven in Among the worlds most dire places - California Homeless Camp
It's complicated. Extremely complicated. There is the political will on every end of the political spectrum to provide assistance, and some of the larger municipalities have voted for tax increases to fund housing, aid and rehabilitation for the homeless. Speaking as someone who has voted -- twice! -- for such increases, I am very disappointed and will be reconsidering supporting these efforts in the future. Why? Because we're mired in a mess of environmental regulations, NIMBYs, study after study after study without actual action, compassion fatigue (guilty of this myself), the question of who is "deserving" of being housed first, homeless people who do not wish to be off the streets, the emptying of mental institutions in the 80s, ever-growing income inequality... That's just the tip of the iceberg -- I'm no expert in this, just someone who is sick of it all, from politicians to advocates to NIMBYs to the violence and the drugs and the poop on the streets. My neighborhood is not too affected, but my non-fiancé's is basically a shantytown on some streets. The mayor is working to bust some of the more onerous planning/zoning regulations to allow for cheaper and faster (but safe) housing construction. I hope it works. We need it.
