I applied for my "Beibehaltungsgenehmigung" in August of last year and was approved 4 months later.
Here's my timeline:
08/03/2009 submitted application to German consulate in L.A.
09/01/2009 the Bundesverwaltungsamt in Cologne received my application
11/20/2009 approval letter was issued
01/29/2010 picked up certificate at German consulate in L.A.
By the way, I did not hire a lawyer and handled all the paperwork myself. My ties to Germany: family, friends, regular trips to Germany, German bank account, German high school diploma, MA degree from German university. My main reason for becoming a US citizen: I'm an only child and will either have to sponsor my parents in order to take care of them or will have to move back to Germany for an extended period of time (both scenarios would require me to be a US citizen).
Good luck!

APPROVED. YUUUUPPPPPEEEEE.
Opening the mail box last night, and seeing only one letter there, and it addressed from Immigration, got me sooooo excited, I almost screamed.
I can't believe it is almost mostly over, just wait fo the reeal card, and then take a break and then at some stage apply for citizenship.
Ahh man, I'm really really legal now:)
Good Luck to All, yours will come soon, it looks like they are actually moving ahead now.
Congratulations!!

Call the National Customer Service Center and put in a service request: 1-800-375-5283 (select options 1,2,3 to get to talk to an actual person) Good luck!
Good luck with that idea. They wont tell you nothing.
It worked for me! I called on day 45 and put in a service request. 4 days later my biometrics letter was issued.

Hiya guys. I just got card production ordered email this morning. We sent off hubby's forms 5/22, got NOA1 dated 5/26, and had biometrics on 7/1. Once we could access online case status, it always said they received the application on 6/3. Not sure what accounts for that. Anyway, yay. That's 66 days from package sent to card production ordered. We've been incredibly lucky with our USCIS processing times.
Congrats!
