"Cheaper in the long run"  ?  Sorry, but that is utter BS.  Do you know how much a round of radiation therapy costs?  Most people don't have a spare $150k laying around to pay cash for that.  And no hospital will negotiate that fee down to something affordable.

What if you get cancer? Pharmaceuticals don't offer those kind of rates...they come from the private companies, not really the provider.
I was a very healthy adult male (young adult, mind you...). The next day, I was informed I had months left and to take it one day at a time.
I was not prone to sickness by any means.

Thank you so much to all of you who were empathic with the question and gave me advices and told me their experiences.
Here is what we are gonna do, based on the suggestions you guys gave us: I will write a letter explaining briefly whats my current condition, that my "Heathcare" is only valid in argentina and sign it. I'll add some links that explain how the universal health care here works, and then my wife will send another email explaining the situation.

Thanks a lot again to everyone!

Thanks for the suggestion! Is there any travel insurance company you recommend ? In the past I used to have travel insurance every time i visited the US to visit my wife. Back in that time, I used to pay like 50 dollars per week for a 1 Million coverage policy with no deductibles. Now, with the covid situation, the same company is chargin $120 per week with only 150.000 coverage.

You should check your information, my friend.
While taxes in Argentina are way higher than in the US, that is because of massive social security programs here.
Regarding to the healthcare system, in 2017 the US spent 17.06% of its GDP in Health Care, while in the same year Argentina spent 9.12% of it GDP.

I know that it's not "free", as its sustained by tax payers, but it indeed is Universal. Universal does not mean that it covers you anywhere in the universe. It means It covers any person that is in the countrie's territory. It doesnt matter if you are citizen, legal immigrant, illegal immigrant or a tourist. Just as an example, I know a guy who had cancer traveled from the US to argentina, and purposedly overstayed his tourist permit to got diagnosed, treated and cured for cancer. He then returned to the US after more than a year. He didnt pay a cent of a dollar.

And, finally, regarding the chances of getting coronavirus in the US, I'm not "panicking" about it. The reason I'm afraid is because to get to my wife's city, i have to take 3 planes, 2 of which arrive/depart in Florida and Texas, the current covid "hotspots". I agree with you that the chances of getting it are pretty low, but I never asked "how can i NOT get covid". I know its a risk I have to face, and if I end having the virus, it would be more than awesome if I'm covered.

    Thanks.

dothehustle reacted to geowrian in So lockdowns were not needed after all?
The headline is misleading. The key item to remember is that asymptomatic carriers are different that pre-symptomatic carriers.

Asymptomatic carrier means they had the infection but never showed symptoms, and passed it on to somebody else.
Pre-symptomatic carrier means they had the infection and passed it on to somebody else before they showed symptoms.
This article relates to the former.

    The takeaway?
    1) Contact tracing is effective. Heavy asymptomatic transmission is nearly impossible to contact trace. Symptomatic transmission (pre or post symptom) can be traced.
    2) The likelihood of a significant percentage of the population having already been infected (and therefore are possibly now immune) is low. Most people who get the infection do actually show some symptoms at some point (even if mild).

It does not mean the lockdowns were excessive (that's another topic still).

Just a quick reminder that without masks and lockdowns the disease would have probably spread many, many times faster.

Would anyone be comfortable gambling with other people's lives just because they don't know 100% how the virus works? If the medical community says, "stay home" and "wear a mask" out of precaution, the fact remains that caution never hurt anyone. In fact, it might have saved many lives, and prevented healthcare from collapsing in many places.

The routine visa processing suspension has nothing to nothing to do with any travel bans.
It's also literally on every embassy's website.

Can we also just stop making these threads and create one when they're actually reopening instead? There's like 10 of these on the first page alone and it seems like it'd be a lot more helpful if people just made threads when their local embassy opens up again than it is asking about it every 10 minutes.

Not quite. Several European countries are opening up and yet visa services have not resumed. So while the rules of the country are a necessary condition, they are by no means sufficient, and are obviously not the factor that is currently preventing re-opening.

I really don't know, but I don't think any interviews will take place until the DoS says so, since the suspension was global, not local.

Yes, just a heads up for when it eventually gets to this stage, that whatever evidence of custody is used to get the visa will be required again to prove legal custody for the passport/n600 (if they choose to get a n600 - at $1175 and months of waiting, many people just get the passport as acceptable proof of US citizenship).

FYI, I brought evidence of my kid residing with me (as physical custody/residence proof) to the passport interview and it was not required. Evidence of admission as a lawful permanent resident (the stamped immigrant visa is fine for that in OP’s grandkid’s situation, don’t need to pay or wait for a plastic green card), evidence of custody, and birth certificate of kid plus proof of parent being USC is enough to meet INA320 standards of proof and get passport issued.

Because this is how these cases always work.  The mother will have demonstrated proof of intent to reestablish domicile for him to get the visa in the first place. If they accept that to issue the visa, then it is equivalent to accepting that the child will be living with the mother in the US.

Just because planes are almost empty does not mean it is advisable for a 75 year old man with underlying health issues to travel. OP, your health is what’s most important here. I hope you’re able to plead your case with the CBP officer when the times comes. These are unprecedented times and they need to make some exceptions.

if I were you I would get in touch with your local consulate. Explain your worries and see what they advise you to do. If anything, your correspondence with them might help prove that you didn’t abandon your residency and that you wanted to come back, but stayed longer because of the crisis. Best of luck and most importantly, stay safe!
