I have a taxation question I'm going to eventually need info on.
At present I collect a pension from a compnay I worked 30 yrs for. It's direct deposited monthly into my bank acct. in Canada.
How is receiving this going to work when I move State side? Will I be able to leave it as is going into my acct. in Canada and at yrs. end file Can. income taxes?
Or is it going to be mandatory that I shift it to a bank here and then claim US income tax on it. Also if I left it as is being deposited in Canada would I have to claim it as foreign income.
Any info. or advice on how this works would be appreciated
Here's a thread on pensions in general. Company pensions are usually treated in the same way as any foreign income (taxed 25% non-resident tax in Canada and you must declare it on your US taxes); however, check with the group holding your pension account and find out what they have to say.
Hey thanks for the thread Ceriserose. That's what I'm wanting to know exactly, the foreign income part of it all and how it would work. Okay yeah I'll check with the place administering the pension see what they say about it all.

no clue on the tax issues!
Can ur Cdn comapny direct deposit it into a USA bank Acct? If not, just use Customhouse.com to transfer it from ur CDn acct ot USA acct. No fees what so ever!! And usually a much better exchange rate that what a bank will give. Also check out RBC, I belive they have a uSA branch called RBC Ventura, that one can trasfer easily between, no clue on exchange rate though. I have used Custom house for quite awhile, some for smal transfers and soem very many thousands of $$. Customer service is top notch as well. Head office is in Victoria BC
Thanks for the response Flames. I'll have to check whether they can deposit it to the US. If not I'll look into Customhouse handling the transfer.
One other thing while I'm here. My Sharks look very hungry they seem to enjoy the taste of Red Wings lol lol

Do they mean 4 months from present or 4 months from Jan 17 when they received packet 3
Last weeek they emailed me stating June, July. I'm close to your timeline

Hopefully Montreal will have thier butt in gear by then. I sold my house in Feb. I'm presently here in WA. with Lorry.
I came here on Feb 23 and ran my return flight back to Nova Scotia out to May 12 assuming my interview would be before then. It now appears I'll be staying at my Sister's place longer than the couple of weeks I had figured on.
It shouldn't matter to Montreal where one lives in Canada. After all we are planning on leaving whenever they get around to us anyhow

Congrats

About the passport photos:
Packet 3 says they are supposed to all be the same. How are they supposed to be the same if Montreal wants 2 by 2 and the medical office I contacted wants 1.5 by 1.5?! And even if they are different sizes, should I get them all at the same time but just different sizes so they are identical (except the size)?
AND...
Am I supposed to attach the photos to the forms or not? Someone recently said no but the form says to staple or glue the photos to it...
I sent mine stapled for that very reason you refer too. It says in the box bottom right hand corner page 1 "Glue or attach photo"
So I did just that sent the packet 3 back then emailed Montreal ionquiring since my photos were attached to the 2 forms would I be required to bring 2 pics for my interview They told me no as the passport pics were on the forms I returned.
I will still be taking 2 passport photos with me though for the simple fact I just don't trust Montreal about anything they or USCIS has told us throughout this entire process. Seems staff have different versions on things

Congrats, happy to hear everything went well.

Montreal received our packet 3 on Dec 11th. Sharon received notice of receipt for that date. I'm HOPEful based upon what some of you have posted reguarding interview dates that maybe whomever emailed us was nuts or in a really bad mood, but if they were, then they are gonna have to deal with us.
I've emailed Montreal back, asking for an actual explanation as to WHY they've added an additional 4 months to our originally anticipated interview date. There should be NO good reason for adding 4 more months based on the "First Come, First Served" process they use.
I've also contacted both of my Senators and my congressman now, so I'm hoping that Montreal will be forced to explain what in the hell they actually DO there to someone. (btw, one of my Senators sits on the committee that oversees the Department of State, so I'm hoping a well-placed call or email from her will loosen up Montreal's tight ### cheeks a little.)
I'm thinking that if everyone that has been told they will be waiting for 4 to 6 to 8 months more for an interview date did the same, maybe someone would begin to wonder what the folks in the Montreal Consulate are getting paid for.
Just glad I have THIS place to vent a little, otherwise I'd be looking for a short-term position with the postal service.
Hope the interview dates keep pouring in..........
Alan
We sure hope you get that interview letter soon. We're frustrated with our waiting on Montreal and this whole torturous process. But it is no where near what you have and are going through with them
I agree with your idea of Montreal having to answer just what they do in the run of a day.
Good luck and hope you do hear something soon

In reply to my email inquiry last week , they told me June, July for an interview date
-
I'm not sure if things have changed but when I did my DS156 forms electronically in Jan and then printed off the copies with the bar code in the bottom right hand corner it stated attach copy of photo
I sent the forms with pics attached, sent Montreal an email inquiring about the pics for my interview and was told I wouldn't need 2 pics at my interview as I had already included them with my returned packet 3
I don't trust Montreal because of the different versions I get and hear on things involving them and therefore will be taking 2 passport pics with me when my interview happens anyhow. I would much rather be safe that sorry
-
Sorry to hear about another hurdle That sucks big time

When I made my appt. with Dr. Doane here in N.S. The secretary told me to bring tne cover letter from packet 3 along with 3 passport pics and $180.00
-
Yes they have thier own forms in packet 3 that they want sent back
In Jan I was informed by them to fill out and send back : the checklist, the DS 230 form,
DS156 forms which isn't in the packet but is done online then 2 copies printed with the bar code that comes after entering it. These DS156 forms are taken to the interview
The DS 156k form they sent I still have and take with me when I go. It's filled out but has to be signed in front of them
They also included an I-134 form to be done 3 copies to be notarized and signed. These are also to be taken when the interview happens
Lorry had done up and had the I-134 notarized before we received the packet 3 . After reading on here that they were picky about using thier forms we did another 3 with the form they provided
They explain it all in the cover letter. I also was told to send my 2 passport pics attached to the DS-156 forms
Seems they are changing all the time. I wasn't sure on the pic thing and was a bit confused, so I called and was told "yes send them attached read the instuctions we sent in packet 3"
They are so proffesional at that place lol lol

Congrats on your approval
Also congrats on putting up with the Consulates Lady Ignoramus
-
You never know with them it could be June or July too. Let us know what their reply is to you
Like I said I had to resend the email as they didn't answer the original
That's not the first time I had to do that with em. Sometimes it seems they don't want to answer
