Hi, it has been a while since my wife has become a US citizen but now my mother in law is a US resident as well and I have a question. She petitioned her step son to come to the US and filed an I-130. It was approved with a priority date of March 2014. According to the latest visa bulletin the F2 category has now reached Dec 2013. My question is what are the next steps if/when the date reaches March 2014? I know that a I-485 needs to be filed but does she do it does he need to do it and when does it need to be done? Does the embassy in Bogota (where he is) notify her son that the date is current and set him up for an interview? What else if anything is filed with the I-485? Just need some information,,,Thanks so much!!!

Hi all, thanks for your great advice over the years!
I have a question. My mom is coming as a new US resident this week. She will probably stay for a couple of months then return after a few months. She has health insurance in Colombia but obviously that is not good here. She will probably be here 2 or 3 months out of the year in total but over time that will probably increase. My question is what have some of you done regarding health insurance? Would travel insurance work? Am I or my husband personally responsable for her medical care if she is injured? Without insurance that could be quite expensive. Any thoughts or things I should consider or think about?

My mom is coming as a new resident and will have her passport stamp as her residency until the actual green card arrives. Any experience out there as to if this should be a problem for the cruise lines. I realize that her stamp IS her green card until it arrives, but will the folks at the check in counter at the cruise line realize this? I called and they give me a sheepishly "yes", not a problem. But I would like to have a more confident answer before I spend $$ ....Thanks!! BTW, we are only going to the bahamas and even as a colombian citizen she does not need a visa to go to the bahamas. She only needs permission to re-enter the US.

Hi, My mom was approved at her interview in Bogota. She received her passport with her immigrant visa stamp and the envelope. What happens when she arrives? I will be with her, but will she be a resident after she arrives, will they put a stamp in her passport? Do I have to adjust status or fill out any more forms? Can we travel to the Bahamas, ie can she travel out of the us for a few days with her stamp before her green card arrives? Just wondering, thanks!

Hello all, My mother had her interview in Bogota for her residency. She was approved and she now has her passport back with the stamp. I have not seen the stamp but my question is if this IS her residency stamp or is there another form to adjust her status once she arrives? Is this the end of the road for us finally?
Thanks!

Is it manditory or recommended that I accompany my mom in Bogota at her residency interview? I am her sponsor

What kinds of questions will be asked at my moms resedency interview at the Bogota Embassy and will I be allwed in also?
thx!

It's not a sure thing; that's why there is an interview. If it was a sure thing, then why bother with an interview?
Generally, an immigration visa is valid for up to six months or when the medical expires whichever happens first. The expiration date will be on the visa .
OK, but what could be a reason to be denied if she has been approved by uscis and nvc? The letter says that she only needs to bring my birtth cert. Can they refuse her for whatever reason they feel like, like they do for visitor visas?

Hi All, It has been a wonderful journey, I became a US citizen in 2010. Last year I petitioned my mom to come here as a resident. She was approved, then approved at the NVC and now she has an appointment at the Bogota Embassy. She has her physical, lab work and then 5 days later the interview. Is this a sure thing or is there a possiblity of denied at the embassy? Also, how long does it usually take, if approved, to,be able to come to the US. Any ideas of the questions or suggested answers? thanks! Cant wait to have my mom here!

My mother was approved for her US Resedency ( I am a US Citizen) and now has an interview and the embassy in Bogota. I want to bring her back to the US the next day. Will that normally be possible? How long of a wait is there usually at the embassy until they have the stamp in her passport so she can travel to the US?

Hi everyone,
well, my wife is finally at the end of the "process" and has her Naturalization interview date on September 10. My question is that is at the US District Courthouse in West Palm Beach and not at the USCIS office where it usually is at. Can we bring friends? Can we film the ceremony? Is it a group ceremony or individual? I had some questions about it and tried to call the courthouse, but there is no answer. Anyone with experience with a ceremony at the courthouse would be greatly appreciated!! Bottom line...were happy beyond words, just would like to know what to expect......
-
Hi, well, my wife did great. Passed her naturalization interview with flying. She received a letter stating "congratulations" that she had passed and so on. But she did not receive any information on the ceremony. Is this normal? The officer said it would be in about a month but a week and a half later, we hear nothing. We were at the west palm beach fl office...thanks for any info!!

Greetings all !
My wife recieved her biometrics letter (dated May 5) and we actually just went to the West Palm Beach USCIS office a week early and they took her in without a problem. We are waiting to hear something else so I checked the
USCIS website with her NBC number and it says a Request for Evidence was sent out May 3. Do we need to call them? Is this normal or should we be concerned? We have not received any other documents other than the receipt notice and the biometrics letter......Thanks!

My wife received her letter for her biometrics at the West Palm Beach USCIS office for May 21. We have a conflict, but dont really want to reschedule. Is it possible to just go earlier or reschedule earlier? Dont want to put it off as we want to get this done. We will organize our schedule if needed but just was wondering what the experience was as far as showing up earlier or getting an earlier appt. thx.!

Hi all,,
We are getting ready to file my wife's N-400 and we were putting together a list of trips and time out of the us for the form. I work for the airlines and as such, my wife has quite a few short trips to Colombia and three cruises to Mexico and the Carribbean over the past 3 years. Is this a problem for the citizenship interview? The total is 14 trips and a total of 104 days in the past 3 years. All of them were less than 3 weeks each and some were just a couple of days like when we went to Niagra Falls. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, it says in the past five years on the form. Am I correct in assuming that if we are applying using the three year residency requirment due to our marriage then the question should be interpreted to ask in the past three years how many times out of the US?
Thanks!

Hi,
Glad you have found someone special that you want to spend your life with. As you can see with my timeline, my wife just received her 10 year green card and it has been such a simple non stressful experience. I know many do have horror cases, but I just wanted to pass along a good experience report to give you some hope and motivation. First, you will need to get married in the states. Second, unless her family already has a tourist visa, they will probably not be able to come. My inlaws own several businesses, have extensive ties to Colombia, and still have not been granted a tourist visa simply because they have two daughters in the US married to Americans. It is not fair, but it is what it is. However, what we did was arrange a wedding ceremony in Colombia (San Andres, great place, highly recommend!!) with her pastor and family. We made it a vacation and left for the US after the ceremony. It was not legal, but was fun and we felt 'Married'. We then came to the US and were officially married here with my pastor in his office. All very legal and all very correct. Correct for her family and the two of us, and the law. If you have any other questions please send me an email and I will be glad to offer any advice I can give you....Take care Greg

This whole process although slow, is really going better than I thought. On the website, our case still shows pending, but we received the notice of approval today dated 9/23. Good luck to all, we are saving our pennies for the N-400!!!!

We recieved the reciept notice that extended my wife's green card for another year. We are taking a cruise to the Islands this summer. Should we have any problems using her green card along with the letter? Does it in fact extend the validity of the green card as the USCIS letter states?..

Hello,
We are planning a summer vacation to Canada in June. (Alaska Cruise, yipee!!) My wife's card expires June 16. If we file before then and have the reciept does that allow her to travel using her card along with the reciept? I believe it extends it for one year is that correct?

Amazing but true,,,green card in hand in four months from entry on K-1 Visa for my wife!!!
Congrats!
We also recieved an approval notice that stated a green card would be sent valid for 10 years...still waiting for that one, but my wife has her 2 year card now.Read that letter again. Your wife has a 2 year green card, and she needs to apply to remove the conditions (90 days before the card expires) before she gets the 10 year card. There is no "automatic" sending out of a 10 year card.
Just curious, can we file for citizenship 3 years from now or is it 3 years after recieving her card after the restrictions are lifted?? Thanks and best wishes to all!!!......She can apply to be a US citizen 3 years after she becomes a legal permenant resident, which is the date on the 2 year card.
We (she I should say) recieved 2 welcome to the USA letters. The first stating she would be recieving her card in the mail valid for 10 years, next she recieved a welcome letter stating she would recieve a card valid for 2 years. She recieved the 2 year green card so maybe the first letter was just an error...

Surprisingly, my wife recieved her letter welcoming her as a new permanent resident in only 4 months with no interview. Is this common? It said to expect the card to arrive within 60 days....I was expecting an interview...what is the deal with USCIS? They are getting really efficient..

My wife came here3 months ago and a month ago we filed for a travel document (AP). I have heard that it can be risky to travel out of the country even with this document for a K-1 during the residency process. Is this true? The travel will not be emergency (hopefully!!) and will be several trips,,,just wondering if it is a risk or no big deal...thanks....

My fiance arrived last week, we are now legally married. Can she apply for a SS card? I have been told no, but is that correct? Can she apply for a Florida id card or drivers license?

He was approved last summer (2014) and his priority date is in March of 2014. He is currently 18 and not married.
