  1. Hi all, my fiancee does not speak English, and I'm wondering how this will affect him at his POE (JFK - He'll be here on Friday). He speaks Spanish, French and Arabic. Will they get him a translator? We've been practicing and he can answer the basic questions (ie: What is the purpose of your trip), but anything beyond that he will not understand. Anyone else have this experience?

    Thanks

  2. I didn't go through Casa, but I would say send a copy of your NOA2 when you get it. He didn't have my birth certificate. He just brought pictures, IM convos, and emails, they didn't even want to see anything. Also any letters you have sent each other in the mail that show the postage might help.

    Good Luck!

  3. Hey all, my fiancee gets here in a week so I love these kinds of threads. I made my fiancee a little welcome basket as suggested before on these boards...It has a razor and shaving cream pack from Target, Deodarant, a French-English dictionary, a cell phone (it was only 14.99 at Target - one of those ones that you buy the cards to add on minutes), chocolates, and printed out this guide from the USCIS website in French

I also did some little things on the computer, like downloading lots of pictures from Algeria and making a slide show. I sent him filled out copies of the I-94 and Immigration form so he can just copy them on the plane. Also tried to do as much as possible of the AOS forms so that I won't have to waste time with them when he's here. I found him a free English class at the library that he can start right away. This weekend its lots of cleaning and laundry then just waiting for next Friday to come.

  4. Hello, I am still trying to figure out something with my Affidavit of Support. My sister has agreed to help us. We are both students, and live at our respective Universities during the school year. However, all our official paper work (Passport, Drivers License, and Tax Return) has the address of our parents house. Since we officially share an address, is that enough to consider her a "Household member."

Also, if I am going to us my parent's address as my residence, should I have my fiance list that in on is I-94? I was having him us my current (mailing) address, but that is going to change in August.

    Thanks

  5. Thanks for the response. Yeah, I know its not the best way, but right now it seems like the only way. I am trying to look at all of our options...my sister helped us with the 134 but she doesn't make enough to meet the guidelines for the 864.

Do you know if my finacee gets his EAD from JFK and starts working can we use his income? Has anyone done this successfully?

Does anyone know of any organizations that can help us? How on earth do all these people get green cards who are not working/working illegally?

  6. Hey all, I'm a litttle short on the I-864 asset requirement (125% of poverty guideline x 3) . I'm a student and I have no income, so I have to use this. I was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible for a family member 'loan" me the money so that I can file as the sponsor for my fiancee. Basically they would put the money in my account, and when my fiancee gets approved I would give it back. Has anyone done this before?

    Thanks

  7. Hey everyone,

Just got back from Atlantic Ave...I found a nice plain white abaya for $50 which is was just what I wanted. The stores there were ok...but I didn't really feel too comfortable spending a lot of time browsing you know what I mean? Anyway, I'm glad I bought something cause I was really starting to freak out.

The dress is nice but its kind of thin...do you think possible to have a seamstress line it for me?

Amera- I would love the name/address of that restaurant.

Bosco - Thanks for the link, I'm sure it will be very helpful

I'm not actually in NYC, but in Long Island, but out here there are like 2 Halal shops.

    Thanks guys for the tips

  8. Thanks!!! Atlantic Ave looks like my best bet. I'm going to be daring and head over there now (you know how it is when you cannot focus on anything besides dresses right :) ) Hopefully I will find something today, if not I will just order online and pray that it comes.

We will probably be doing all the touristy stuff in Midtown so any Halal suggestions there would be very much appreciated.

  9. Hey All,

My fiancee is arriving on March 9th and we are doing a private wedding ceremony as soon as possible. I am looking for something to wear to the mosque - like a white abaya. I have searched online, but I'm kind of scared it will not come in time. Anyway....does anyone know any good Islamic Clothing shops in or around NYC? I know there is a big Arab section in Brooklyn - Any specific suggestions????

Also, if you have any suggestions for Halal restaurants that I can bring my fiancee too when he gets here please post them as well!

    Thanks!

  10. Thank You for the thread!!! I am so excited/nervous/emotional. Its been a crazy couple of days. He is coming on March 9th. I have already spend all day yesterday making room for his clothes and stuff (we are going to be living in a pretty tiny apt for a few months  ) and already am starting to get the AOS paperwork together (does it ever end???).

We are still in shock. All this time that I was waiting I never really let myself think about him actually being here (in case something went wrong you know?). Now its like a whirlwind getting everything together. I just cannot wait to see him at the airport....

Thank you all for your support!!!!

  11. Happy Wednesday All!!! Spoke with the Spanish embassy yesterday and they said my Fiancee's visa was APPROVED and was mailed out with his passport yesterday. By the end of the week we should have the visa in hand (inshallah). I already spent all yesterday night cleaning out my closets to make room for him :dance::dance:

  12. I have been watching and I like it, more the later episodes 4 and 5 than the earlier ones. Sometimes the way they act is not really in line with the teachings of Islam, but I think that makes it more realistic. My fiancee was pretty disappointed that they showed the couple kissing and butt pinching and stuff like that - he said it would have been nice if they had made it so that Muslim families could watch it together, and he could never watch that stuff with his family. Its a cheesy show but I enjoy watching it.
