With an unrestricted SS card you only need to show a drivers liscense and the ss card when filling out the I9 for a new job.

The secured credit cards work like this:
You place the amount you would like your credit limit to be , say $500 in an account held by the bank in your name. You can not access it but the money will be returned to you if you cancel the card or it gets converted to a regular non secured card.
You can then use the secured card like any other credit card up to your limit. You then can pay it off each month in full if you like but the money to pay it off does not come from the inital $500 in the account but from money you have in your personal checking/savings account.
If you choose not to pay the card in full each month then you will accrue interest on the account.
The initial deposit is in case you use the card and do not pay it off or make payments then the bank can take the money in the account to settle the credit card and cancel it.
With some secured credit cards after you have used the card and payed on time for a year (depends on the bank) they sometimes convert it to a regular credit card that is not tied to the money in the seperate account and then give you back your "security deposit".
Some secured cards charge a monthly fee to use it so check this. The bank either makes money on the monthly fee or it also makes money on each transaction (payed by the merchant)

There are more filipinos in Columbus than you think. There are two groups TOPAS and PASCO which have events throughout the year and once you get in a group you will see that your social circles expand. There is also a filipino restaurant, La Herba Buena in the Dublin center that you can visit and the owner can probably hook you up with contact information.

No problems with it in the checked baggage, make sure it is well padded, you need to declare the total amount of liters you are bringing in and the cost.
I should add that it should be in a sealed commercial bottle and not some bootleg lambanag packed in a used Alfonso bottle. I asked for some lambanog to bring back and that was what my brother in law produced.

I took travelers checks on my first trip, after one trip to a bank to cash them i just used the atm and ate the charge. Again wrote down each serial number, passport number, and took forever. Once I inquired about opening an account and was told there was a $500 minimum balance required.

Tell your friend to stop calling his fiance "wife". If this slips out in a conversation during her interview (she refers to him as husband) or during enterance to the US, or in an email that you might submit it will open up a can of worms you might not easily get out of. The Philippines only eliminated the death penalty in 2006. On the immigration forms you filled out on the airplane when I first traveled in 2005 "Death to Drug Smugglers" was on the bottom.
