  1. A few years ago a Canadian coming to the US wouldn't necessarily be able to prove they came in legally, because they didn't require passports. This is what happened to my husband. So when our AOS interview came around, the officer was like, "how do I know you came in legally?" We swore he did! See, I thought that in their computer systems they had all the info from the POEs! He said, "no we don't have that." Grr. But we got approved anyway (clearly).

Jay does carry his green card with him. I had no idea it was a misdemeanor not to, though. Wow.

  2. I'd put a star next to it and say "awaiting AOS approval." Therefore, it would not look like you were here illegally. Besides, if you filed for AOS you are here legally. Your status is "applicant." And your stay does not expire unless you get kicked out or denied, as far as I know.

When we filled that paper out, that's what we did. I just made notes on it to explain our situation b/c my husband overstayed.

  3. Oh, the hilarity. Personally, I am American, my husband is the Canadian (lucky him) and I knew a good deal about Canada. We did learn Canadian geography where I come from. However, I will say that when I was a little girl I thought that Saskatchewan was where the Sasquatch came from. Funny that my husband is from SK! Haha.

And just to add to the funny stories about uninformed Americans: A month ago my husband and I went to file our taxes. The preparer asked my husband where he was from and he said "Canada." She got quiet and then after a while said, "I don't know anything about Canada. I'll admit it. I'm just a stupid American. I mean, I know what all the PROVIDENCES are called and everything, I just maybe don't know the cities or where they are."

I nearly died. I was kicking my husband under the table. When we got home we had a good laugh about that. Providences. Sheesh.

  4. I agree. My husband came over as a visitor from Canada and accidentally overstayed thanks to advice from the 1-800# for immigration. His overstay was like, 2 years I think. Our AOS was approved. Overstay was not even mentioned in our AOS interview.

If you want to talk to a lawyer, find one that gives free consultations. They're out there. Don't spend the $$ unless you really feel the need.

Good luck and congratulations on your baby and your marriage!

  5. There have been a couple of recent reports here of SS cards issued without the wording. Those cards are errors.

The card should bear the wording "Valid for Employment with DHS authorization".

This is true. This is the one my husband has, too. ALthough now that he has his green card, I'm wondering if he should have a different one? ANyone know?

  6. I totally understand your question, but like someone said before, I'm not sure you're going to get a great answer here. Personally, I have heard of applications being denied because the applicants didn't respond to something (like an RFE) but that was because they never got it. I don't know what the post office in your area's policy is on "undeliverable" pieces of mail. Are you keeping track of your case on the USCIS website? I know it's not totally reliable, but that could help. You can see updates on your case there. I don't remember if it says when or what they mailed you, but I have a feeling it does. Someone other than me probably knows. I can't recall at the moment. Although I DO know that I used to receive e-mail updates from USCIS and it always told me when they mailed me something. Good luck.

  7. My personal opinion is that you should make a documented effort to add it to your file. I'm not saying it will happen. When I filed my bio I too forgot to put down an address where I had lived and a job I had had. Someone along the way told me it would not matter. Also, in my opinion since you were going to school your permanent address would be fine. Many places prefer a permanent address while a person is going to school, so maybe you'll be okay, too. That's just what I think.

  8. Oh and I think the chips that taste like chicken are I think BBQ Chicken flavor...

The chicken chips (lol) that I like are Roasted Chicken flavour. Just remembered that. BBQ sounds good too, though. There are also these mini brownies at Quick Trips in Sask. that I adore.
