Peikko got a reaction from Mr and Mrs S in Consumption, Not Population Is Our Main Environmental Threat
It is an issue of population. Large populations are not sustainable without massive energy consumption and, perhaps more importantly, a large consumption rate is indicative of a comfortable lifestyle. What does this guy want? Massive populations that live barely live at subsistence levels? What a crock of ###### that is.

Of course it is - I mean, nothing happened to the black man - he was rescued from poverty stricken Africa and had the audacity to complain about his conditions. Silly black man.

I am sorry, but there is too much ignorance in this post to really go anywhere without a huge lecture, which I don't have either the time or the inclination to give you. Suffice to say, the individual has less ability to change their circumstance than you choose to believe, particularly in the US. For the most part, if you are born disadvantaged in the US (and by that I mean born into poverty or low income families) your path upward is, well - let's just say it's not a given regardless of how hard you work.

Have you ever interacted with the disabled? I have a suggestion for you, instead of advocating vile views on message boards, go out and volunteer your excess free time with an organisation that assists the disabled then that question will be answered for you.

As penance, perhaps you should hang out in Off Topic wearing a sign that says "I'm keyboard challenged". Some public humiliation just might set you straight.

That's what you want to see in the US? People drinking through 'life straws' so you can feel good that you pay for your water and those that don't have theirs cut off? Priceless LIB, I think you have exceeded all my expectations.

A solution for 'developing countries' is going to save the day in the good 'ol US and you have the audacity to say that Obama is ruining America. I tell you one thing, America is a better place for political satire than the UK. No one really holds extreme views in the UK any more. Brilliant.

I said they can make requests, they can put whatever signs they like up, I totally respect their right to have their opinion. What I am disputing is that the request is reasonable or that; anyone should be made to feel that, by not complying with the request, they are inherently disrespecting those living in the neighbourhood, they are not. If you want to buy into the idea that not complying with the request displays a form of disrespect you can. I don't. Personally, I wouldn't go out of my way to be offensive, I would just be my normal self and I would expect most people would. However, I reserve the right to make fun of the sign writers on VJ by thinking up alternate dress code signs of my own.

Sometimes I think that here are people on VJ who just post the opposite point of view to whatever the 'librul' posts no matter what the resulting nonsense ensues. No one is declaring it an exclusively jewish neighbourhood. The intent of the sign is to advise of a religious view to dress code, nothing more. There is no hint that those who are not jewish are not welcome, although there may be some people who do take that view, but there is nothing that could lead you to conclude that from the sign. Comparing that to a sign saying 'White Neighbourhood' is just irrational. There is no comparison.

Where are the public standpipes? You are just being nonsensical and odious by trying to suggest this is not a fundamental right and requirement for both life and public health.
If you don't get water for washing, flushing the toilet and drinking piped to your home, exactly how are you proposing urban people obtain water? Catch it in rain tubs? Or are you saying they can go buy it in the store? You really do want the US to turn into slum world capital it would seem. Horrible opinion.

What's your point? You think Cholera isn't a threat when people live in unsanitary conditions? You think that having people shitting in toilets that are not being flushed and can't wash isn't going to result in some outbreak of disease if allowed to continue?

I read the article, it clearly states that their agenda is ensuring everyone has access to fresh, clean running water in their homes, homes that are designed only to be lived in safely and hygenically if running water is in fact allowed to run freely through the taps. It's a nicety to suggest that somehow people who no longer have running water in their homes are not being denied a fundamental right. I am not quite sure how anyone has the right to the pursuit of happiness if their latrines are backed up, they can't have a wash and they have to buy bottled water to drink. Perhaps you can explain that more clearly for me? I also don't quite see how you can ignore the public health issue that arises from such a situation, not only for those who have had their water supplies cut off, but for the entire neighbourhood. Does that not strike you as at the very least short sighted?

It is the opposite. If everyone had guns then nobody would have been shot, ergo, the blame for this shooting falls squarely on the shoulders of those not carrying guns at the time of the shooting.

Really? How shocking. So, tell me, where do you propose people who have descended into this cycle of poverty access fresh water for washing and drinking and flushing their toilets? They already have no money, so what do they do? As a resident who pays my taxes and my water bills, I don't mind in the least supporting those who are not lucky enough to have these resources, this is water we are talking about, not a ###### cell phone.

This is not a personal argument, so don't turn it into one. It's irrelevant which you know and are deliberately trying to make this about whether I personally feel responsible for people in Detroit being deprived of the right to a fundamental resource, water. It's not my personal responsibility, I can do what I like about the issue personally, but it doesn't change the fact that either the US stands up for all its citizens and upholds this fundamental human right or it does not, the US loses yet one more notch in its claim to be a first class place to live which as I live here, I find to be an important issue.

How many lakes are there in the Detroit neighbourhood? Do you think it's a good idea to have people shitting and peeing in toilets that aren't being flushed and on top of it not being able to wash?

Where? You keep saying it and yet I see no proof that they have any access to water at all. You do know how a Cholera epidemic starts, don't you?
