  1. As for the police certificate, my wife got hers from the local police station. They have a form there you fill out and hand to them. Then they will run her check and stamp/sign it with the results and give it back to you. She got hers back within an hour of waiting at the police station. Basically, the search has to include the national database - search across Canada (I think it's called CPIC database?). Someone mentioned to me that the certificate needs to come from RCMP but my wife never got that and didn't have any problems. I think the RCMP one (including fingerprint search) is only necessary if the person has a criminal record, but I'm not sure. Like I said, my wife only got the check from the local police station and we are expecting her green card in the mail soon.

    Good luck.

  2. We stayed at the Travelodge too last week. It was ok for it was granted we were only there one night. We paid around $120 for the night. It was only a 6-7 minute walk to the consulate which is really the only reason we decided to stay here. It has a small parking garage and parking is about $21/night. Desjardins complex is almost right across the street from it (2 minute walk). It's a decent sized shopping mall. It's also right next to China town if you like Chinese food. The room we had wasn't that great. It was really small by American standards but then again their rooms are European style so that was expected. The bathroom was small. The shower had only 2 settings: really hot or really cold. The breakfast was generic, nothing special but good enough (cereal, bread, milk, juice, fruits). The one thing I did like about the room is that we had a good Wifi signal (room 111). If I had a longer stay I would probably look at other hotel options.

  3. Thank you! I'll get some paperwork on it just in case.

It also accured to me that his immunization records are all hand written and not in order so I'm not exactly sure if they're all up-to-date.... Where would we get the shots done to update them? At his doctors or at the medical exam? I couldn't find anything on it when I checked. I'm pretty sure he just needs the flu shot(ick- wish they didn't) and the one for tetanus.

The record my wife had for her prior immunizations were on a hand written card. She had some done back when she was in school. To get up to date on the immunizations, she went to her local physician to get them done. She took the handwritten card with her and the paper from the Montreal consulate listing all the immunizations they require. The local doctor then checked which ones she had already done from her handwritten card and gave her the ones she didn't have. The doctor then updated the handwritten card. My wife then took this handwritten card to the medical which served as proof for being up to date with the immunizations.
You can get all the immunizations you need from the panel physician as well but I've heard that's expensive. The shots my wife had to get were a couple hundred dollars and were done at a local pharmacy. She did have to wait a week between shots too. So I would recommend getting your immunizations done before going for the medical to save time and maybe money.
  4. I'm not an expert on this topic but I don't think your husband will have any issues as far as for his back pain issue. I think the main point of the medical is to determine if the person has, like you said, transmitable disease like TB that could pose a threat to others. I would recommend that your husband take a letter with him to the medical explaining his back pain issues, how it was caused, treatment plan for it, etc. Maybe also have a letter from your husband's physician explaining all this. Probably not necessary, but it won't hurt to have in case they ask about it. But overall I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as "failing" the medical.

Just to add, my wife has a thyroid condition but she didn't have any issues at the medical.

    Good luck!

  5. We used an accordian style folder. Metal shouldn't really be an issue as they will pass all your items through an xray scanner. So as long as you're not hiding the binder in your clothes, I can't image metal being a problem. There is only 1 security point at the consulate and they use airport-type security procedures, so if you can take it through airport secruity, you can probably take it through the consulte security. One thing to keep in mind is that if you intend to physically hand over any documents at the 1st window or at the window of your interview, the document must be able to slide under the window opening. Or I guess you could just hold it outside the window and show them your document but that may pose a problem if they ask for copies of that document. If the document is thick and rigid (maybe more than 1/4 in) it won't fit in the window slot and thus you won't be able to physically hand it over.

I seperated all my documents into manilla folders and labelled them with a post-it accordingly (I864, brith cert, marriage cert, etc). Then I put all those folders in the accordian folder to keep one neat packet together. Definitely a good call on having extra proof than not enough. Also take copies of anything you show them because they may ask for it. I had some of my tax documents for which I didn't have copies but the lady there was nice enough to make copies of them and gave back the originals to me.

    Good luck!

  6. But how early can we get the medical exam before the inerview?

You can do it anytime after you get your case complete and interview letter from NVC. They will ask for your interview letter when you go for the appointment. Don't wait too long though either because it can take a few days to get back the results, so you want to allow plenty of time for that. My wife's interview was on Sept 23rd and she did her medical on Aug 20.

Other advice I've head on VJ says that don't do it too early and don't wait until the last minute.

    Good luck.

  7. Visa Journey People

I am just wondering is there any way to make an appointment sooner ? I tried to reschedule. But i know it is a risk. Because i might lose my present interview.

or maybe i dont know how to check the calendar without cancelling my interview..

I just cant believe.. I have to wait 2 months and half for my Visa Interview. And My NOA 2 says that it expires in November 10th !!!!!!!!!!!!!

If there was then everyone here would be doing it :)

  8. My wife got her Police Clearance certificate the same day. She went to the local police office. They should have a form there for it. Fill it out and give it to them. You may get either same day service or may have to come pick it up on a later date. It all depends on which police station you go to and your criminal history. If you have a criminal record, then you have to go through the RCMP office. I'm not too sure about that but someone here may provide a better answer.

Also read through the information in this link about Police Records (scroll down to that section).

    Good luck.

  9. Hey Guys,

Just waiting for my interview date to be sent from the NVC and I was wondering how far in advance they usually schedule, and how long it usually takes to the the date from case complete??? My completion date was Sept 17th.

    Any help would be great.

    Cheers,

My case complete date was July 16 and my interview date was Sept 23. They gave me my interview date in the last week of July or early August I think. So from the date they told me about my interview date to the actual interview, it was a little less than 2 months. Hope that helps.

  10. Unfortunately they don't give you estimates for NBC. Mine took 5 months to get noa2. I filed back in nov 2012. Your case will be transferred to a local office so call uscis and talk to tier 2 ISO to find if it is transferred. Thats really all you can do and wait.

    Good luck on your journey.

  11. My wife got her police cetificate by going to her local police station and filling out a Police Information Check form. I doubt this form differs too much between areas, so I think you filled out a similar form. The form my wife got back had the Badge ID and signature of the office who conducted the check along with the date of the search and police seal (on the 2nd page). She got her certificate in a police station within the GTA.

    Hope that helps.

  12. I wouldn't wait for the tax return transcript to be available. That could take a while. I was in the same situation as you. When I was ready to sent my AOS packet, I didn't have my 2012 tax return transcript (and still don't!). In my AOS packet, I sent in a copy of the tax return I filed. I did not send them the W7 ITIN page, but I sent the rest (1040, W2, 1099s, etc) along with 2011 and 2010 tax return transcripts which I ordered earlier. I finally got my wife's ITIN letter last week. Those morons lost the certified passport copy I sent to them, so they had to look in their office to find it which has slowed my return process :( Don't know when the transcript will be available. If it's not available by interview time, I will take the copy of the tax return.

I forgot to make a copy of the signed return, so I just printed out the filled out forms and my wife and I signed them again. I did my best to guess the date I put on the tax return that was sent to the IRS. BE SURE TO SIGN your tax return though before sending it as part of the AOS packet. Otherwise, you will get a checklist.

I sent the signature page to my wife in Canada. She signed it and sent it back to me. I signed it and rescanned it. Only thing is that Montreal has Electronic processing so I only had to send a scanned copy of the return. I assume you have to send the paper document since India doesn't have electronic processing?

I personally didn't have any issues at NVC, no checklists or anything.

    Good luck.

  13. Hi everyone,

This is my first post so my apologies if I've broken any forum rules.

I just got married to an American (three weeks ago). I was already in the US but returned to Canada for my mom's 60th. I was denied entry back to the US as a visitor because I'm now an intending immigrant. So my husband and I are in the process of submitting the necessary documents for me to return to the US where we intend to live.

Can someone confirm or correct my understanding of the process?

    1. My husband has to submit the I-130

    2. We wait for acknowledgment (2 acknowledgments)

    3. Once the I-130 is approved, I will need to go to the US consulate office in Montreal for an interview

I know the above is a very simplified version of events but I just want to make sure we're starting off on the right foot. The US border agent told us to apply for a K-3 visa but I've been reading on this forum that there really isn't any value to the K-3 since the I-130s are being approved sooner and also the cheaper method.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I had known all this beforehand, I would have begged my mom's forgiveness for not appearing at her 60th until after I got an adjustment of status while in the US.

    Thanks

    Joanna

Welcome to VJ. You can apply for either the K3, IR/CR visa or DCF. There's pros/cons to each option. I personally applied for IR1 visa because at the time I applied, the wait for K3 and IR1 were almost the same. So the advantages of K3 didn't out weigh its cons. And I don't qualify for DCF.
Here is a page that compares the different kinds of visas. http://www.visajourney.com/content/compare
You can determine which one suits your situation best.
As for the process, there's guides here on VJ which lay out pretty much all the details you need. Once my I130 was approved, I followed Saylin's NVC guide that goes through the steps for beneficiaries who will be interviewed in Montreal. See link below. This guide is for those who applied for IR/CR visas but has useful information that can used for K3 as well.
Good luck on your journey :)
  14. Just got my packet 4 email!! On the 1st page it lists my wife's name under the Applicants Eligible to Attend the Interview. I know from reading reviews of the Montreal consulate, that many USCs accompany their beneficiaries to the interview. I will be going to the interview with my wife. Does anyone know if they will let me go with her to the actual interview booth? Or do I need to email the Montreal consultate or NVC to get my name added to the list of people who can attend?

    Thanks.

  15. I took my wife's photo and got them sized from www.epassportphoto.com as suggested in Saylin's guide. Then I printed a whole bunch of them for less than a dollar. The ones they do at my local pharmacy is just with a cheap point n shoot camera. I can do the same if not better with my dslr :-) and print them for 19cents each instead of $8 for 2. just follow the photo guidelines posted on the travel.state.gov site. Epassportphoto is great!

  16. Call USCIS and ask them to transfer you to an Immigration Service Officer - ISO (Tier 2 representative). The tier 1 people only give you useless generic information about your case (basically what you see on the website). If they don't transfer you to tier 2, hang up and call again. I had that happen to me where the tier 1 rep was unwilling to transfer me to Tier 2. Once I got to the tier 2 rep, she was able to tell me that my case was transferred to my local office and on what date it was transferred.

    Good luck.

  17. Congrats and welcome to the US!! Wow you got through the process fast! My i130 was mailed back in Nov and am now waiting for an interview date. Lucky indeed.

    Congrats again!

  18. Congratulations!!!

Do you know if it's possible to get another number if you're in the situation of the person who got C4? Or do they take your documents/fingerprints and then give you the ticket? Also, do you have a post/review somewhere of your medical?

    Congrats again!

  19. Bill 101, passed in the '70s, made French the official language in the province of Quebec. Signs etc. must be in French. They can include English as well, but French has to come first and be in larger print than the English. It's been very controversial in Quebec over the years.

Thanks for that info. Seems kinda shady that the rest of Canada provides French translations while Quebec won't provide English translations. They obviously didn't sign up for the good neighbor policy.
