You can get married at the National Marriage Registry in Abuja. That is where my husband and I got married and it is recognized. Any Government Marriage Registry should suffice.
Abuja is a long and rough drive from Kano--not sure I would advise it if he has the option to fly. There are too many local boys and road blocks between Kano and Abuja. Once you get south of Kaduna, it is better but still not smooth. You should look into local air carriers that go between Kano and Abuja--although, to be honest, I don't know if that would be cheaper than just flying from Kano to Lagos. Domestic airfare in Nigeria is different.
We lived in Jos from 2008-2010; it was not without it's scary/dangerous points. My husband was last in Jos in March and his mother and oldest daughter are still there. We drove between Abuja and Jos many, many times. Kano is another three hours North of Jos though--and I can't speak specifically to that route. I will say that even if you both can get to Jos, that may be another less expensive option for you. I have a tainted view, because I love that city and her people. I have many friends and family still there--both Nigerian and foreign. It is relatively safe if you take precautions. Some friends of ours (French/Nigerian couple) have a lovely B&B if you want to consider it. With all that being said--anything can flair up at any time--and that is a very real risk.
If you want to look at Abuja, I know some decent guest houses that will cost you half of what the big international hotels are charging. Abuja is a refreshing change of pace from Lagos. It is cleaner, more organized, less crowded, etc. when compared to Lagos. The airport is smaller and easier to get in and out of. PM me if you want any hotel details for Jos or Abuja.
Hope that helps! Good luck on your journey!

del-2-5-2014 reacted to Possiblymaybe in Please Help- Pregnant and US Husband cheated
I'm shocked that all of the responses have been to move back to australia before the child is born. The father has a right to his child. His actions have proven that he does not deserve his wife, but cheating on a spouse is no reason why a man should be denied his right to be a father to his child. I can imagine that you are extremely hurt and upset right now, but I think if you were to take a step back, you would realize that denying him his child is not a punishment to fit the crime.

Thank you Gowan. He said he was going straight to work and straight home when he gets there. He's traveling this weekend I do believe. . He was once in Sokoto for several months and that's how he stayed safe. He won't have time for clubbing... 12 hour days 6 days a week. Whew!
And congrats on lil Gowan!! I'm excited for the both of you...or should I say the three of you.

del-2-5-2014 reacted to handsofholes in What are some things you wish you knew when you began your visa journey?
Yes, I've read that you automatically get your green card upon arrival and marriage with a CR1, but I don't think I will be able to do that.
What are your reasons for suggesting this, though?

del-2-5-2014 reacted to Anna Grant in What are some things you wish you knew when you began your visa journey?
I wished we had married and AOSed from with the US whilst I was in the US in July 2012. Instead we submitted the K1 and I went back to the UK and the whole transatlantic relationship continued. We never realized at that stage that it would take 11 months until I could return for good to the US.
Other than that, same as Gowon, I wished we had gone the CR1 route. Cheaper and you can work as soon as you're back in the US.

del-2-5-2014 reacted to Karee in So afraid of making the wrong choice - I want to go home.
My parents got a divorce when I was 7. At the time I thought it was a good thing because it was constant fighting between them. It sucked living in that environment. My mom struggled financially for years. I never blamed either of them for the divorce. I'm 45 now and still think it was a good thing.
I think as a child it's better to be poor and somewhat happy, rather than financially secure and downright miserable.

I will say this and you need to talk to your fiancee' and ask her to be honest. Ask her what name she used? What passport she used?
They are questioning her identity. many Nigerians once denied go get other "papers" get a new passport and file with new name. She needs to come clean. This does not look good when the US government ask for people to identify you.
By chance was their an issue with her Birth Certificate? Have you seen her Birth certificate?
I am not accusing her of anything thinking what the CO may be thinking. This is very unusual.

del-2-5-2014 reacted to rlogan in Has my marriage been ruined by PMS (or rather by my inability to deal with it?)
There will have been some red flags much earlier on. For example, not even knowing the sister's name - a sister that is in the USA! Incredible, really. Traditionally people make it a point getting to know the family, friends, and neighbors of a serious relationship... but most especially one that is in the same country she is immigrating to. This immigrant for marriage already has an illegal alien sister here whose name has been concealed so this should be setting off the alarm bells at the outset.

del-2-5-2014 reacted to missicy in Has my marriage been ruined by PMS (or rather by my inability to deal with it?)
I don't think your marriage has been ruined by PMS or your inability to deal with it. This woman simply used you for immigration benefits. Pull I-864 so she can't get a green card, then get a divorce and move on.

del-2-5-2014 reacted to KayDeeCee in K1 and Childfree
There is no requirement to have children in order to get a K-1 visa. A non-issue for that. It sounds more like a rant about the military and society as a whole, rather than something having to do with obtaining a K-1.

-
del-2-5-2014 reacted to CowBoE in K-1 big problem
A simple answer is "yes", any US Citizen can petition for K1 visa infinite number of times,
but just realize that a right to submit petition is completely different from getting the visa approved.
But by playing with (illegal) fire the first time, you are now spewing very visible smoke
and someone will notice it, and I think both you and the original petitioner likely have
seriously lowered your chances at getting future K1 visas approved.
Just realize that its people like you that try to cheat their way into US
is what is causing so much scrutiny and delay in processing time to legitimate couples.
I have my doubts, but hopefully you are cleaning up and this new petition is real.

You found a Cop that cared to use his judgement for wahtever reason adn that worked out good fo ryou. You may not be lucky next time.
You don't need physical evidence to be arrested for assault or abuse. Simply stating that she feels threatened by you or what you said, etc can easily mean arrest or at the very least that you be removed from the residence and having a PRO issued.

Was just wondering the same thing. If i ever had any respect for this VJ member, it's evaporated now.
And side note: if any person can't feel homesickness as deeply as another it doesn't mean noone can. Not everyone has an emotional range of a teaspoon.

naaah that's all BS
it means I have PMS and a GPS. Which means I'm a b**** and I will find you! P@ss My Shotgun and Pardon My Sobbing !!
to me it's PMS with a little premeditated BS and OMG mixed in! She wouldn't leave the way she did after 36 days
withdraw the affidavit of support and stop being a Romeo at this point!
Good Luck

del-2-5-2014 got a reaction from kehills in I had enough with the petitioner, i want to cancel the petition (merged)
One should never ever do that. Even the embassy recommends one not to quit jobs, sell properties, etc until visa in hand.
It is unacceptable for both.
This process is basically paperwork, or getting documents to fill out more paperwork and waiting.
Personally I think this relationship needs more work in the relationship corner more than immigration paperwork. Perhaps a reset and time out while priorities are reexamined.
The immigration process sis easy and will pale compared to the real work of holding a relationship that is now in front of you and not just on Skype

del-2-5-2014 reacted to Sandra G. in Married yesterday on K1, now my new wife wants to leave to go back home.
I am sorry but I will die without understand this bs about" homesick" .Love does not happen by chance, the alien decided to start the relationship, the alien decided to get married to a foreign person, the alien knew he/she had to live in the US, then it was a conscious choice to date and to get married to a US Citizen.I believe someone madly in love and insanely happy with the spouse would live in Congo, Afghanistan, Rwanda if it's necessary.
It's normal to miss the family, food, friends, but being sad, depressed, crying, saying I want to go home is too childish for me.

When you post to boast about your less than impressive "accomplishments" for everyone to read, you leave yourself open to all manner of hilarious speculation.
It's a good thing you can laugh at it, though. And you have plenty of time for it, as evidenced by certain items in your blog.
