Hi,

I am a little confused about this police certificate thing. I am a canadian resident living in Vancouver BC. I have read that you need to send a RCMP police certificate with packet 3 once you receive it. My question is there are 2 types of police checks a finger printing one and a non finger printing one(name check). the finger printing one takes 60 days to complete and the non finger printing one takes 10 minutes to 24hrs. So which one do i need for my packet 3?. The finger printing one or non finger printing one?

Do you have a criminal record of any kind... If so, you need the fingerprint one. If not, you can get the name based non-fingerprint one...

And you do not submit it with the checklist... you give it to the CO at the time of your interview.

If you do not have a criminal record, all you need is the name check. If the report comes back ambiguous ( someone with a criminal record has the same name as you), you will need the fingerprint check done.

Received D230 01/05/06

Sent D230 01/20/06

All paperwork received by NVC 02/10/06

CASE COMPLETED!!! 02/16/06

Interview Montreal 06/14/06

Received Visa 06/15/06

Crossed border 08/06

Received Green Card and welcome letter 11/07

Lifting Conditions

I-751 received in Vermont 06/06/08

Cheque cashed 06/13/08

You stated your a Canadian resident and not a citizen? Have you lived anywhere else in the world? If so you require a police check from there as well. Believe its from age 16, but I may be incorrect!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
