Black to serve up to eight years

Former media tycoon Conrad Black has been told he is likely to spend between six-and-a-half and eight years in jail.

Judge Amy St Eve told Black that the guidelines for his offences were between 78 and 97 months and will give an exact figure later.

She also decided that Black would not be treated as the fraud's organiser.

Along with business associates, Black was convicted of stealing millions of dollars from shareholders of Hollinger International.

The announcement on sentencing was reported by the Reuters news agency.

Black still professes his innocence and is appealing against the convictions for fraud and obstructing justice.

The maximum sentence for the crimes of which the Chicago court found him guilty would have been 35 years.

Black and his associates were found guilty of paying themselves tax-free bonuses from the sale of newspaper assets without the approval of the company's board.

In addition, Black was convicted on one count of obstructing justice, after being recorded on tape removing documents from his office in Toronto after US regulators had informed him he was under investigation.

St. Eve seems to be sharp (she had earlier prevented Black from "waiting for sentencing in his Pigtown home"--a place where he gave up intrinsic rights to be some years ago), fair and knowledgible about this case.
