i have heard that you can extend the two year validity of a k3 visa. Is this true, and if so what is the maximum period of time you can extend for and what cost?

K-3/4 Nonimmigrants:

Use this form to obtain an extension of K-3/4 status while your permanent residence case is being processed. You may also submit a Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, at the same time as this form to request renewal of your employment authorization. You may travel outside of the United States and be readmitted as a K-3/4, if you have a valid passport and K-3/4 visa.

Following from Visa pro!

Yes, you may apply for extension of stay while on K-3 spouse visa using Form I-539, Application to Extend or Change nonimmigrant status, 120 days prior to the expiration of your authorized stay. Extension will be granted in two-year intervals.

Cost is $300
