Rumsfeld Challenges Rice on 'Tactical Errors' in Iraq

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said he did not know what Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was talking about when she said last week that the United States had made thousands of "tactical errors" in handling the war in Iraq, a statement she later said was meant figuratively.

Speaking during a radio interview on WDAY in Fargo, N.D., on Tuesday, Rumsfeld said calling changes in military tactics during the war "errors" reflects a lack of understanding of warfare. Rumsfeld defended his war plan for Iraq but added that such plans inevitably do not survive first contact with the enemy.

I really like this part of the article, though:

Rumsfeld pointed to the nature of the Iraq war -- unpredictable from the start -- as the reason the United States has had to change tactics over the past three years.

"If you had a static situation and you made a mistake in how you addressed the static situation, that would be one thing," he said. "What you have here is not a static situation, you have a dynamic situation with an enemy that thinks, uses their brain, constantly adjusts, and therefore our commanders have to constantly make tactical adjustments."

But we all know, Rummy never makes mistakes he just changes his tactics. Condy also never makes mistakes, she's just talking "figuratively." And it's all the fault of an enemy who is unpredictable, something we would have never known listening to these people 3 years ago.

Why is it even newsworthy that two different cabinet members (Secretary of State--equivalent of "foreign minister"--and Sec. of Defence) happen to disagree?

Because they are two key members of a deeply unpopular administration. Add to the fact - they are both key architects of the Iraq war, which is a major reason why this government is so unpopular.

Its not surprising that, in the end, everyone is interested in saving their own skin and preserving their reputation. Bit late for that if you ask me - they made their beds a long time ago.

It wouldn't be if that's what it was. But it isn't.

It's the architect ripping the project manager to pieces and the project manager, in return, accusing the architect of being ignorant about the business. What really happened is that both the architect and the project manager tried to defy gravity by simply denying it's existence. All the while, the poorly planned impossible structure is collapsing.

That's newsworthy.

If Bush is serious about shaking things up in and around the White House to help his approval ratings, Rummy might just be on his way out. Bush cannot improve his performance ratings with this ridiculous, incompetent dwarf by his side.

I just hope with Tom DeLay getting outed, people won't think that the corruption started and ended with him. He was a crook for sure, but not the only one. Just the most publicly visible...
