I am currently in the process of applying for a K-1 visa, and originally, my fiancé's father was planning to be our joint sponsor. However, due to health issues, he is now unable to work and will undergo heart surgery. Despite this, he does have sufficient income to meet the financial requirements. Does he need to show employment to be able to co-sponsor? Thanks.

Income is income and can come from employment or a host of other sources

You mention savings in the title, but then say income in the body of your question.

They are treated differently. He would need to have five times whatever shortfall there is in qualifying income. All of this is at the discretion of CO too. Many people meet the requirements and COs still ask for another/different co-sponsor.

For example, the CO might think your future FIL might need those assets to support himself now that he is no longer working. In general, there seems to be a preference for income over assets, as assets run out whereas income is theoretically ongoing.
