What misconceptions and prejudices do you experience from people about your homecountry after you arrived in the US?

I am always amazed how people assume that I must be sooooo happy to be finally in the US, if in reality, the only reason why I am here and wanted to come here is to be with my husband.

I even got asked one time how we communicated while we were apart and when said per email, phone, text messages,...I earned a surprised look, like they couldn't believe we have that kind of technology...in GERMANY??????!!!!

When I was in school I told my friends that I was going to Colombia for summer vacation and one of them had this puzzled look on her face and then asked "How are you going to land?". She thought Colombia was all jungle. IDIOT!

Oh gosh, people seriously asked me if the Nazi party still excists!!! Can you believe that? I am really amazed about the ignorance some people have when it comes to achive some knowledge about other countries and cultures...lol

And yes, it's like I have knowd Hitler in person, ya know?

And when I state that I probably don't want to give up my german citizenship (for many reasons), I earn looks like I'm insane. How can NOT want to be american? Why in the world can I be happy to be german?

It's almost ridiculous what you have to listen to when you are german....

Probably similar to the cr@p I had to listen to when I was living in the UK. I got so sick of it. People there also thought I was strange for refusing to take UK citizenship; some people even told me that I shouldn't be allowed to live there if I had no interest in becoming a British citizen.

FWIW, most of us do seem to realize that the Nazi party is a thing of the past, that Hitler died in 1945, and that Germany is a technologically-advanced nation and one of the world's largest economies. Even though Hitler's Nazi party killed dozens of members of my family I don't hold today's Germans responsible. There's no shame in being German.

Perhaps I got my more than fair share of "I have to bite my tongue and be nice in my reply" kind of questions dealing with tourists for ten years, but I was surprised at the kinds of questions I would be asked very sincerely by many people. And I am still surprised at the questions I am still getting asked by friends! In my opinion, it's not a matter of stupidity for all people ('cause yes, there are dumb people out there), but a matter of lack of exposure, or self-education about the rest of the world. Many people I have met since living here have not left the state or the region in their lifetime, which blows my mind.
