Cool. you were smart not buying brand new. People lose thousands of $$ by buying new.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

When my wife first started driving the insurance on our two cars was almost $1100 for six months. Earlier this month the bill was $800, so $400 per vehicle, and mine is a sports car (turbo, AWD). So, not too bad for the O.C.

The best way to buy a new car (since you can compare apples to apples) is to make the dealers compete for your business. Decide on what you want, then send emails to every dealership in the area: "I'm gonna buy a VW Jetta, blue, black leather interior blah blah blah". Tell them you're buying in a week and the best quote for that specific car gets your business. We got my wife's brand new 2005 Mazda 6 for $1400 under invoice as a result. :)

People should also research the rebates they can get by using a car company's own finance arm. I got $1500 off my car in addition to the $2000 rebate because I financed through Hyundai. I did my homework and there's no penalty for refinancing so that's what I'm going to do. Basically I got $1500 off the car for filling out the credit app and being accepted.   In the end I got the car for $3k below invoice. Schweeeet.

This is an outstanding time of year to buy a car since a lot of dealerships are trying to get rid of their 2007 models in preparation for the 2008s. Mine's a 2007 Sonata and I love it.

True, but buying used it's hard to get exactly what you want. Buying new, my wife got the exact color, interior, and options she and I wanted. And with a new car you know no one's abused it or fudged on the maintenance.

I bought new. If it had been an "American" car, I probably would have bought used. With Toyota's they really keep their resale value for a longer period than domestics. I had looked at used Toyota Corolla's and many had over 50,000 miles and were selling for maybe 3 or 4K less than new.

Word it how you like but when you buy new you lose more money in depreciation than buying a car a year or 2 old. A 2 year old car is just as good as new now-a-days. Unless you buy American ;)

What's done is done ;) I didn't want to have to buy anything, but my truck would have never made it here and with emissions testing, it would have failed for sure. I'll have my new car for as long as I had my truck.

I got mine for less than what the gently used 07 and 06 Sonatas were selling for.

Yes. It really depends on where you would purchase the used car because car dealerships are known for high mark-ups, especially with Accord's, Civic's and Camry's because of their high resale value.
