Hi can anyone recommend an accountant who can help with filing and has experience with UK and US finances? Preferably someone in or around Milwaukee but it's not essential.

Thanks.

You might also look for a Facebook group called something like Brits in Milwaukee to find local experience groups to ask as well. Or a Reddit sub group.

I tried that already without any success.

Do you have friends, family or coworkers who use CPAs? Even if their CPAs don't handle international tax issues, those CPAs may be able to refer you to others in their network.

I have been asking around and spoke with a couple of CPA's who I was referred to. One of them just flatly said they couldn't help and another referred me to someone in another state who claimed to have experience with people in my situation but didn't fill me with confidence when she wasn't familiar with some of some of my specific needs. For instance,  I have a small amount of investment funds in the UK with PFIC's which, from what I have researched, isn't uncommon for Brits in the US. I'm sure this person can figure it out but I'd be happier finding someone who already has this experience.

@Geobots I suspected you might be asking about PFICs. Try Nelson CPA: https://nelson.cpa/become-a-client/ My husband and I had a consult with them recently about my own foreign investments.

We have an existing relationship with a different CPA, right now but depending on how happy (or not) we are with their service this coming tax season, we may switch to Nelson next year. During our consultation with Nelson, they pointed out some high-value tax credits that our current CPA missed on following up.

Hope this helps!

Brilliant thanks very much. I will give them a try.

Have you had an accountant deal with PFIC's yet? I have been told it can get complicated and I'd like to get an idea of what to expect in terms of cost for having a CPA deal with them.

For complicated international/US tax issues I’d think one of the big firms (PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Ernst&Young) would be able to find you someone to handle your first tax return in the US. Check out their websites and local offices. I never worked in their tax department but know they have them (for sure PwC).

Not yet. This MAY be the first year we have to file. There is a minimum reporting threshold, below which you don't need to report. We were quoted a few thousand dollars, but that's because we also have a business and jobs to consider in our IRS reporting.
