My wife came to the US on a k1, and is now a green card holder. We went to the SS office with the GC to do the name change so that she could get a drivers license. Now we got a letter in the mail stating that "Your legal immigration status will expire before an SS can be issued to you".

Huh? Her green card doesn't expire until 2023. What the hell. And actually trying to get through to the office is impossible. Every time someone actually picks up the phone it turns out we got transferred to a different office.

If they keep giving you the runaround then you could contact your congressperson or senator through their "Help with a federal agency" page. You would select "Social Security Administration" from the options.
